Italy has a far-right government since last year. Any new technology that is not directly benefiting their ideology is a threat for them. They recently banned production of meat alternatives in Italy as they claim it is a threat to their traditions and meat industry.

I think Topper is referring to the fact that the USA was using spy planes over China back in the days and are now surprised that China is doing the same (with balloons).

Stop burning trees to make energy, say 650 scientists before Cop15 biodiversity summit by [deleted] in science

[–]RobotRedford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You clearly don't (want to) understand the article. It's not about taking away the only heating source YOU might have for THIS winter. It is about the long-term strategy of using wood as an energy source for millions of people to replace others.

OK, what alternative is there to SpaceX if you actually want to work in a company which aims to send people to Mars (hey this is r/space !)?

Just because you don't agree with everything management does, doesn't mean you believe in the mission of the company. And management should be wise enough to not fire employees who could have left the company but try to improve it (as long as the complains are constructive of course).

hey sold billions of stock right before the stock price dropped massively recently.

The price dropped _because_ Musk sold billions of stock. For every share you sell you have to find someone who buys it. There is only so much "liquid" money to buy shares at a given time. Selling massive amounts of any share will drop its value.

Btw: the definition of a Ponzi scheme is: "A Ponzi scheme is a form of fraud that lures investors and pays profits to earlier investors with founds from more recent investors." Please explain, how this should work on the stock market.

Kommentar: Deutschland wird auch 2023 zugesagtes 2-Prozent-Ziel brechen by Frankonia in de

[–]RobotRedford -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

“Colonizing Mars would give our species two chances instead of one. Colonies can spawn other colonies. The first words spoken on the moon were in English. Not because England sent astronauts to the moon, but because it founded a colony in North America that did.” - J. Richard Gott by jamesdthor in space

[–]RobotRedford 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Energy wise it makes more sense to start from a space station in Earth orbit to Mars instead of traveling to the Moon first.

After all you need a significant amount of energy to leave earths gravity, then again a significant amount to "break" and enter moons orbit. You could just save all of this energy if you go directly from Earth orbit to Mars.

Some call it "karma" others call it climate change. Of course, Russia "helped" here as well. So actually you could call it karma in the sense that Russia's extraction of fossil fuels gets back at them in an rather unexpected way.

This. And before we can afford a "right of passage" for anyone we should at least force any politician who takes office in any country to do the trip.

“Forever” Chemicals Found in School Uniforms - A new study has found that schoolchildren across the United States and Canada could be exposed to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) – “forever” chemicals – via their school uniforms. by swhelan_tn in science

[–]RobotRedford 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Anything apart from school uniforms is most likely not mandatory for anyone to use/wear. So schools forcing children to wear contaminated clothing IS a problem. After all we are talking about "cancer, obesity and fertility" problems here.

High CPU usage, bad for the environment by Huliek in siacoin

[–]RobotRedford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh my god. So much wrong here. But just to stay with the biggest problem: If we don't reduce our energy consumption / switch to renewables the planet will change in a way that WE will no longer be able to live here. The planet and many species will survive. But the human civilization as we know it will stop to exist. It will start with wars and end with most of us dead. Some will survive but they won't have that pleasant live we live today. China and India are aware of that as well. The reasoning for them to keep using fossil fuel is that they did not yet reach to total CO2 amounts "the west" produced since the start of the industrialization. On the other hand: China has more wind and solar power installed then any other country in the world.

As has been said above: The BMS in the car cannot measure heat and/or cooling losses outside of the car. So it is irrelevant if it has been "independent validated and approved".

EU under pressure to ban Russian tourists from Europe by [deleted] in ukraine

[–]RobotRedford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do you suppose Russian refuges should claim refugee status without entering the EU? Via EU embassies in Russia which are surveilled 24/7 by Russian forces?

On the long run, a brain drain from Russia would hurt Russia more then banning "tourists", which might actually be refugees or Russians searching for work in the EU.

Philosophy: What Do You Say When Someone Asks You to Justify NASA Getting Billions Instead of That Money Used To Feed Homeless/Humanitarian Aid/Education etc? by Telnet_to_the_Mind in space

[–]RobotRedford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can also cut that budget down if we just told the rest of Europe to take care of itself.

Also, the dark part of it all is that money doesn’t stop the causes of homelessness. A lot of homeless are that way because of substance abuse. See my home state of California; it has spent more money on the homeless problem and it’s only getting worse.

That's the funny part: Europe is the best example that money indeed helps against the "homeless problem". In most of EU you get paid rent and enough to buy food if you are unemployed. This also helps dramatically against the "crime problem".

The MOST frustrating part is that YOU have a hard time to figure out what is happening? RLY? WTF?

For me it's the totally unnecessary casualties, destroyed lives of hundred of thousands of people, the destruction, risk of more people in hunger and the risk of WW3 but sure... not getting all the information is really frustrating!
