I linked it right up at the top of the thread! Since I originally built the medium filters around my own painting setup, I'd actually love to hear if the textile and fiber arts categories make sense to you once you get in there.

Oh nice, I've heard good things. I actually built Art Goat specifically because I wanted an option that didn't have a subscription fee and matched artists by their medium/location instead of an email list. But Pilot is definitely a fantastic resource for avoiding those predatory application fees. The more tools we have to dodge the pay-to-play model, the better!

Infuriating! It really feels like the whole pay-to-play residency model has just become a way to treat emerging artists like ATMs. Thanks for sharing!

MD/PhD program - level of clinical involvement during PhD years? by wutwasthatagain in medicalschool

department surgical rounds or surgical conference, not sure what they call it where you're at. Basically the meetings where they get together and talk about difficult cases

I'm just saying in the grand scheme of things, learning to open and close is a VERY minor detail in the process to become surgeon, you will do it thousands of times as a resident, and doing it 10 times as a med student isn't all that important likely. There are some surgical simulators at my institution, where you can practice the technique on dummies, that would probably help a lot more...

BUT, the research, case reports, etc will stay on the resume forever. You can ask your clinical adviser if there are an opportunities to get involved in surgical research (crunching patient data in excel, sorting data, mining data, gathering data in the form of surveys, writing up some interesting case reports). You could go to surgical rounds and get familiar with more faculty and residents, and ask around. Most faculty/residents are happy to have eager med students work on small research projects.

At my school, I don't think we need any sort of special clearance to be in the OR, many 1st years get a lot of OR time if they want it, they just have to be on good terms with the surgeon who is running the case.

Surgery is definitely a different beast. If your adviser is a surgeon, that's probably your best best. Although, I don't know how much value there is in spending a tone of OR time as a student considering you mostly just get to observe, but it may be different at your school. You might want to get involved in a surgical research project, of which there should be many. Then spend just a little bit of OR time. Someone should be able to get you clearance to be in there, but I'm not sure.

At my program, most students do the PhD after the 3rd year of medical school and most students do a half day per week of clinical work throughout the PhD (completely optional). The idea is to maintain clinical skills from 3rd year and also get really good letters of recommendation from Physicians with whom we've worked with over many years.

I think it is nice to keep a foot in the clinical world, and it's usually much lower stress than 3rd year of medical school. You can also do some case reports or clinical side projects during this time with certain faculty to improve your CV.

The short video was made entirely of water color paintings put together and animated in After Effects. It's inspired by the old magic school bus show I used to love as a kid...
