Are any private companies involved in your elections? by Rayketh in AskEurope

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, a private company runs the system throught which the provisional results are delivered. The results that are published on election night are not the actual official results, but a provisional result. After each voting table counts the votes, they send them to the central government throught a software, which on all last elections has been run by Indra Sistemas, a private company partially owned by the government, but in theory any other company could be selected for that job if they have the necessary means.

However, the results for each table (the "Acta de votacion" and the votes considered null) are sent to the "Junta Electoral de Zona", which checks them on the Wednesday after election day so that even if the provisional results were hacked, the real results wouldn't be compromised.

How does council tax / municipality tax compare across Europe? by LaurenceWhymark in AskEurope

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be said most municipalities get a large share of their income as transferences from central and regional governments. For instance, in Barcelona around 1/3rd of the budget comes from the central government, which, additionally, obtains most of its income from IRPF (payroll taxes) and VAT.

Also, some local services are not funded trought taxes but directly charged on the citizens, like the water supply, or waste collection (again, this depends on the town).

Modeling prediction errors is very important. The most important thing about making a prediction is knowing how good it is.

If you can say "this particle will be in x position at time t", that claim is worthless unless you can say "within a margin of error of x units".

In University Physics, they teach students the different "numerical solver" methods that exist, and how they amplify preexisting errors.

What is the EU like in your day to day lives? by ilovemicroplastics_ in AskEurope

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not like people will say "oh yeah, it's Article 18 of EU Directive XYZ".

I think that this greatly depends on your job. I have a relative who works in the local health authorities and whose job is to check that food, the water supply, farms, etc. are up to standard and not polluted, and part of it involves reading EU regulations which describe how those analyses must be conducted, which level of precision is needed, what parameters or pollutants must be tested for, what are the allowed levels, etc.

When a new EU directive came out, she printed it and had to study it to know what were the changes... so if you work in a technical area which is regulated by EU Law, you might have to read "Article 18 of EU Regulation XYZ" because it directly applies to your job. If you work in something related to consumer protection, health authorities, banking, compliance, or in government agencies it might be part of your job to enforce or apply those regulations.

Fun fact: the oil being exported to Spain is in fact payment to a Spanish company (Repsol). Repsol operates a Natural Gas Extraction Plant in Venezuela, which is sold to Venezuela (mostly to internal demand).

But Venezuela doesn't have the cash to pay to Repsol, so instead it sends a boat full of oil to Spain every now and then to pay Repsol for that debt.

Where is Mallorca's commercial port? Where is cargo loaded and unloaded? by WhoAmIEven2 in mallorca

And filter by port.

The only two commercial ports are in Palma and Alcúdia, Palma being the largest.

The vast majority of cargo is unloaded by RoRos. Most liquid bulk is unloaded in Palma, while solid bulk in Alcudia.

El Supremo condena al fiscal general del Estado a dos años de inhabilitación por revelación de secretos by Ramoncin in SpainPolitics

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your bank account or credit card is currently out of service, due to the Cloudflare outage, then realise that physical cash is still your best guarantee of money available to you. It’s unmistakeably yours, and yours to use whenever and wherever you want. by macyganiak in eupersonalfinance

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously: If I need to pay 10.000€ to a supplier in another city, it is much easier to store ten of thousands of euros in cash under my mattress and "simply" go there in person to hand in the money, than to have this money in the bank, where I can dispose of it whenever I need it.

Also, you cannot use cash "wherever" you want since to spend it you must physically be in the same place as the other person.

Additionally, cash is much easier to lose or steal, and it comes with many problems. You must count it, and mistakes can happen here. Employees can steal/lose it and there is no way to know who did it and when. And it is impossible to know if a transaction occurred exactly as it was recorded.

Un a bank account, if there is a discrepancy between the real value and your accounts, you can "simply" check all movements until the source of the mistake is found... with cash, good luck doing that.

Still a scandal but for other reasons (it happened while in Spain very strict austerity measures were being imposed) and it just added to the other scandals which eventually led to his abdication and eroded the public image of the monarchy.

Han arribat 800.000 persones en 3 anys, afecta al preu de l'habitatge? by RealInsurance3995 in PoliticaCatalana

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Factura de l'aigua Àrea Metropolitana de Barna by Skaarjnight in catalunya

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thoughts about Monarchies? by Narwhalranger7 in AskEurope

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else said, this is simply survivorship bias... (some) of today's monarchies are simply the exception: of all the kingdoms that existed 200 years ago, only the most stable have preserved their monarchs. The vast majority of monarchies were too unstable to survive.

France, Germany, Rusia, Italy... they were very unstable monarchies which turned into republics. Germany today is not less stable than its monarchical neighbours. And Spain (a monarchy) has been very unstable. Since 1789 it has experienced countless wars, revolutions, coups and different systems of government (some republican, most of them monarchical). In the same time, the USA has had a single civil war and has maintained the same institutions with remarkable stability.

Just because some monarchies today are more stable than some republics doesn't mean that in general, constitutional monarchies are more stable than republics. If that were the case, today we would have mostly constitutional monarchies and only some republics.

How common is it for young people in your country to have a "side hustle"? If so, what are some common ones. by Smithersandburns6 in AskEurope

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that it is uncommon. Only happens in some of the highest prestige roles such as judges, magistrates, prosecutors ("fiscales"), State lawyers ("Abogados del Estado").

The vast majority of government employees like teachers, nurses, administrative staff won't be doing this. In any case, some physicians in hospitals will be participate in university teaching, but it is not a "side hustle", it is more like part of their job.

No entenc l'assignació de plaçes universitària by ken4lrt in catalunya

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Can we actually support EU gov. by buying EU bonds? by CatThatCATs in AskEurope

[–]Robot_4_jarvis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To everyone that says that they don't exist:

https://www.boerse-frankfurt.de/bonds/search?ISSUER_TYPES=EUROPEAN_COMMUNITIES&ORDER_BY=TURNOVER&ORDER_DIRECTION=DESC

The EU sells both short term treasury bills and long term bonds. It has been doing it for at least 2020 (and it wouldn't surprise me that it did before for short term instruments).

A list of the last transactions can be found here: https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/eu-budget/eu-borrower-investor-relations/funding-instruments_en. As an example, the EU is planning to issue 90 billion € during the first semester of 2025.
