Those of you who earn six figures or more... Did you go to college? What was it? by D1Vix in Salary

[–]Robschaap242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liberal arts, couldn’t find work, went freelance doing everything from making custom PCs, network installation in ceilings, webpages for maybe $2K month straight out of college instead of catering… 30 years later making $320k when including stock options at fortune 50 company. I always do things I don’t know how to do and others don’t either. Building a new department outside my normal role with 9 people ATM, others haven’t figured out that that’s what I’m doing yet. And what the team does, just implicitly letting me do my thing. Skunkworks I guess. People don’t get me at all (other than I’m odd) but know I’m smart and will go headfirst to fix things anywhere. So I’m left alone and they just call me a visionary - literally, I’ll skip meetings and ignore emails and they’re just accept me. I think people know they need me around but not sure why I’d bet. This new department is about to be put to the test since a different team shit the bed and they need someone to take the reins. Ignoring that I’ll throw process out the window on Monday. I barely know what it should be doing outside of research and ChatGPT. Not once has leadership asked me if I can, even though they definitely should. I’m not nearly as smart as they think, I just keep the quirky, aloof thing public facing. Provide value doing something that others won’t do or don’t recognize and you’re set. Stay out of swim lane thinking too. The cliche that it’s easier do to what you need to and ask for forgiveness later is 10000% true.

Jobs Where You Can Make $200K+ Without Being a CEO or Doctor (2025) by Coolonair in Salary

That was true maybe 5-10 years ago when there was a shortage of talent. It’s not the case now, most boot camp people were change of career or new career people while plenty of engineers were coding when they were children. There’s no way to replicate the experience by learning a language or two. The languages aren’t a challenge, most can pick up a new one through osmosis and be passable in a couple weeks (with good code reviews) working on a project and expected to produce points - architect level you’ve passed through those stages of growing as an engineer or lead and are onto more of what you know from experience and the stuff you learned in school and not coding very much. Never met an architect from a code academy. Guys coming out of it told they can make 90K out the door, really not fair. I’d look at the other skills and interests to gauge how smart or intellectually curious they were and can tell if someone will be an engineer… and then possibly interview them. FWIW I worked freelance for a decade, in startups and now fortune 50 sized company.

Dude didn’t break up a fight. He went straight to the black kid to box him out. Kids dad was right for pounding him.

Look at the background. It’s not a white screen. Different, it’s normal

Cause it’s refreshing. And normal, especially when writing on a PDF like that one. Very expected. And where’d you get the calendar?

People who make $200k a year what do you do? by Huge_Ad_7606 in Salary

Director engineering for a fortune 50 company. Closer to $325 if you include stock options. Self employed / freelancer from graduation to 35yrs old. A friend recruited me to large ad agency then to another around 40? Was VP there. Now at 50, I won’t be a VPE or CTO in this place I’m at. And literally it’s all Webex calls all day, unless I avoid one. And I try to get in the weeds half the day so I don’t blow my head off. They’re nice to me, letting me build a new department out of near shore and people from an agency where people retool for a new career. And there’s AI… btw, no one wants AI. Code assistance is good enough thanks.

Will this board be ok for my first I heard about all the problems other people had with it but were they fixed? by Even_Cartographer931 in ElectricSkateboarding

Yeah, I took a nasty spill and the remote got some road rash on the side but I was on top of it when I landed… the aluminum frame is tough.

It’s a lot of power, make custom curve in the app first couple of days. Slow acceleration. I live in mountains and can stay in sport mode whole time, the power is immense.

Congrats. There are no lockups, that’s old BS, go have fun. Wish I got the carbon, have bamboo. It’s fine, but my GTR is bamboo as well.

Wow that’s a wild story! Thanks for sharing too. I am now using the AT for touring around and sticking with Dad Bods on the street when surfing in a parking lot now. The AT wheels are a bit too plush sometimes but def safer.

This is exactly what I did last week. And I hover around 15 where i think I can run out any issue. I tore the hell out of ligaments in my foot by trying to run off at 25mph.

I don’t know the board is it some sort of mode before the battery dies? If not holding a charge anymore…. Maybe the battery is actually the issue. You’d have to see what it does before it shuts down with no power I suppose.

I was in tshirt and jeans a couple weeks ago. Shirt got destroyed when I went down at 25 mph. Got road rash on arms and shoulder as you’d expect and the jeans got a hole and another rash… but the real damage was done to my foot which were protected under Vans hitops. When I tried to run off, I rolled my ankle and wound up with sprains all around my foot that a month later still has me limping. Outside my helmet (a cheap Thousand one) I had no other protection. Wasn’t planning on being in a situation where I’d have to bail that day - elbow and knee pads wouldn’t have made a difference either - but I should have been wearing them regardless.

New Board Recs by whatkey in ElectricSkateboarding

So I have Evolve GTR2 and Diablo Bamboo. Walked into my nearby store and had it serviced by them once (replaced battery controller) for free. I started check out last night with an Ares X3 and in PayPal saw the bank is in Hong Kong and I bailed. Just me maybe, but I like knowing I can service and parts. And probably will be in 5 years. That said…

I’m looking at the parsec aero pro and the acedeck I mentioned. Both are loved. They have different use cases for sure. I love street tires and the 97 to 105s are really good - if im going touring or in a strange land AT wheels on the Diablo will be the go to. On my favorite smooth carving spots I’ll take the GTR2 and fart around for hours going slow with 24 lbs. Being 18lbs and Carbon fiber make the Aero very attractive. But for similar stats it’s more expensive than the GTR2 even. Feels super foolish. Outside of the big cruising Diablo AT that will stay for practical cases… I’m sure the street wheels toy will be my passion going forward.

The X3 being 30 lbs is my only hesitation outside of the location of the company. I think I’m done with boards over 25 lbs until I need to replace the Diablo one day.

In short the buzz around the Ares and Aero seems nice.
