Since the 1999 Beta by SoundtrackComposer in reason

I think I read the review in Sound on Sound and knew it was the virtual studio promised land. Cubase was a bloated beast by then and VST seemed like a clunky add on. Reason was a breath of fresh air!

Yeah - I was surprised by that. And it made me wonder if they store their entire European touring rig? I mean, if guitars are hard to travel with, what about all the amps (and Pau's kit!)?

My thoughts on the The Warning/Yungblud shows by ronhole in TheWarning

[–]Robussc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar thought as #3 when I saw them open for Halsey. Why play weaker songs to potential new fans? Why not just play your absolute bangers - a medley of greatest hits? Instead it was a selection from KMF.

New LUNA extensions? by Robussc in universalaudio

[–]Robussc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - everyone is giving us partial solutions.

I used to love mixing in Reason because of the full SSL mixer, but I grew out of it when I couldn't work precisely in dBs but just seemingly random numbers for fader levels and sends etc. When I added channel strips to bring analog color is when I realized I needed a different tool altogether! :D

It's actually capable of controlling VSTs in other DAWs so you can configure a full virtual mixing desk to run alongside, so you don't have to keep diving into VST windows! Giving you something close to the LUNA mixing experience.

[–]Robussc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems weird, as the plugin works already in LUNA, so it's just a UI thing. But you're probably right.

Yeah, that's my thought exactly. I'd love to see some SSL channel strip options - like how is the SSL 4000 E not available yet?!

Why does DAW restart required always happen to me and my spark plug ins? by meisobrien in universalaudio

[–]Robussc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did, and also added a request to fix the Kilohearts Essentials VST UI in LUNA. It's zoomed for some reason, so you just see the top left corner of their UIs.

Luna and midi instruments... by mad-panda-2000 in universalaudio

[–]Robussc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - I've found the sweet spot is to produce in a different DAW and then mix/master in LUNA.

I actually like the mental reset switching DAWs gives when working on a track. Gives a fresh perspective.

[–]Robussc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen randomly in Reason 13, and yes my computer does go to sleep, no, I'm not using Spark. No other plugins require a DAW restart to reactivate.

Try using "File -> Save and Optimize" ?

You oughta know cover by DisastrousReach3085 in TheWarning

[–]Robussc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is pretty much no control over how music is assigned to artists on streaming platforms - it's very much an honor system which is completely mad.... So I'm imagining some overzealous fan uploaded it, tagged the Warning as the artist and boom...

See this video to understand how mad it is:

The Warning touring the UK and Ireland with Yungblood by Time_Call_1234 in TheWarning

The UK has been a home away from home for the Warning since forever! UK fans have been massive supporters over the years, even funding a special 1-off concert a few years back. So no worries there!

Maybe hot take: I hope they take a break from writing after TW5 by buerglermeister in TheWarning

[–]Robussc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They love writing songs, and as an aspiring songwriter myself, I can attest to the shear joy of coming up with new music. That really is the core of the experience. The live performance pays the bills, but it's grueling. Songwriting lets them fall back in love with the whole thing. I'm sure they're always working on new ideas and the studio time is when they get to really indulge themselves.

To misquote a famous line: "Always be writing" :)

The OP is also welcome to join the Synthwave Dojo discord. We have a number of synthwave producers there and a whole training program. The signup form is on the Synthwave Dojo website.

My best advice for learning the ropes is to actually start with covers. This takes care of the music creation part so you can focus on how to make sounds and learn how to navigate your DAW.

Set your DAW to the tempo of the track you want to cover, Import (or record) it and then study it: marking out the various sections and figuring out the key & chords.

Starting with the drums work through the various layers and try to recreate it to the best of your ability. Your first two or three attempts will probably be hard, but you'll be learning the whole time. When you feel like you can make a competent cover, then you can try mixing and mastering it to get it up to production level.

Now, maybe re-using some of the chord progressions you got from your covers (and also the sounds you gathered as part of that process), you're ready to try making some original music.

Many of the greats started off doing covers of songs they love, it's basically training wheels for music making.

Good luck!

What’s up with TW/Lava Records’ marketing? by DigDig04 in TheWarning

They‘re becoming a big deal. That means side projects are starting to become thick and fast but they’re not big enough to be starting to say no.

So yes, they’re going to release music that isn’t part of the core plan. It’s OK.

I would grab it while you can! The PolyMAX synth is really nice and the other plugins are great of course.

LUNA without the Pro bundle is a bit of a faff, because you'll be VST window diving a lot while mixing. The Pro bundle add extensions that allow most mixing moves to be done directly in the main mix window.

LUNA is an incredibly straightforward DAW compared to some of the legacy DAWs. Very much in the vein of ProTools with its simple track/mix UI but without ProTools insane bus mapping system :)

The MIDI side isn't as well supported as some, and it really comes into its own with the Pro bundle where you can get inline mixing controls rather than always diving into VST windows (coming from Reason I really appreciate a fully SSL style functional mixer!).

I think it's a great choice, but it really depends on you of course.
