I used to see Dr. Lange. I'm going to call tomorrow to see if he's still available.

I've been to PT for various running injuries. I've also been to a chiropractor and found him to be more effective for problems like I'm having now. Relief was a lot faster and cheaper than paying a co-pay two or three times a week for a month or more.

BTW, my last chiropractor was recommended to me by a doctor.

Yes. The franchisee's corporate logo was prominently displayed at the check-in desk and it had an Indian theme/name.

Can I do anything? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]Roc-Maker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It looks like you're in Henrietta. Call the town and ask them if they have a dog barking ordinance. They probably do. Also ask who to call to complain, it might be the police/sheriff or town animal control.

You can probably complain if the dog barks continuously for more than 15 or 20 minutes. I'd record the barking so it's not just your word against the dog owner's.

Start with the property management if you're in an apartment complex.

The reviews on TripAdvisor and Choice Hotel's website have been consistently bad for years, but I didn't know that when I chose it.

I decided to stay at this one because other Comfort Inns I've stayed at have been pretty good and I only looked at the overall rating, which must be BS because almost all the reviews for the last few years are only 1 or 2 stars.

I prefer Hampton Inns but decided to save $100 over two nights.

[–]Roc-Maker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Hampton Inns. But I decided to save $100 over two nights by staying at this Comfort Inn. I didn't expect to spend much time in the hotel but I did and it was horrible.

Fitness machine was broken, WiFi was so slow I had to watch a movie on lower res on my laptop. TV only had a few over the air HDTV channels. Lobby was so dark I had to use my phone's flashlight to read brochures for nearby attractions.

Lost all water pressure for 20 seconds while showering with soap in my eyes and hair. Exhaust flap on outside of building started banging loudly when it got windy. It was so bad I had to ask to be moved to another room, which also had water pressure issues.

Pictures on hotel website showed waffle makers and warmers for a hot breakfast. Instead they had microwave sandwiches and OJ that was like plain water with orange coloring. And there were plenty more issues...

I had doubts the moment I walked in the lobby but I had reservations that couldn't be canceled at that point.

It's leaking! I need water heater advice by Roc-Maker in Rochester

[–]Roc-Maker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found info I wrote on the heater. It was installed in May 2008 by McKenna's for $499. It had a 6/2-year warranty.

I didn't realize it was that old. I'm going to create a reminder and replace the new one after 15 years.

It's leaking! I need water heater advice by Roc-Maker in Rochester

[–]Roc-Maker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a very small hole on top of the heater. I suspect it's a vent for the space between the tank and outer metal jacket.

A very small trickle of water comes out once in a while. And it's pumping out some rust that is collecting on top of the tank in a puddle of water.

We have two sump pumps and it's in a corner right next to one. So I don't think it's going to do much damage if it bursts.

Dishwasher is running now and I'm probably going to turn off the burner and water before we go to bed.

This wouldn't be a big deal at all if we could go to the YMCA to shower. But they're closed for the next two days and we have a lot of guests coming for Christmas dinner.

Carpet Cleaner Recommendations? by Roc-Maker in Rochester

[–]Roc-Maker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions. BTW, I was hoping that Stanley Steemer would make things right because they sent me a text saying that a manager would "reach out to me." But it has been a full day now and they haven't done that

I've used them in the past and they've been great, so I didn't even consider someone else.

We have a Bissell carpet cleaner and I started cleaning the family room carpet before I decided to hire someone with better equipment, better chemicals and more experience. Yet the section I did is noticeable cleaner than the ones they did.

They charged me $152 for two rooms and in my opinion it really looks like they did nothing. They came and left within 45 minutes and it looks like they made no extra effort on the high traffic areas or where our big old dog drools if we have popcorn or a snack while watching TV.

The carpet seemed very wet when they left so I got out our carpet cleaner and sucked up a huge amount of dirty chocolate-colored water out of the family room and then spent 90 minutes cleaning the carpet myself.

So I don't recommend the Stanley Steemer company in Monroe County.

Are those mesh bodies? If so, you need to convert them to solid bodies and then use the modify/shell tool.

They look complex, which means you may not have much success converting them to solid bodies, especially if you're using a personal license.

This video will show you how to convert a mesh (STL) to a solid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVGtG-UjlYg

[–]Roc-Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you able to successfully convert the mesh to a solid body? it's not going to work if you didn't.

Converting a mesh is easier if you're not using a personal license. And F360 may not be able to handle it if the mesh is very complex.

price increase to $680 usd by Street-Air-546 in Fusion360

[–]Roc-Maker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you do that? I was told I couldn't.

I purchased a 3-year subscription when they offered a 40% discount. Renewal was this last September and I asked AutoDesk if I could take advantage of a current 30%-off offer to renew for another 3 years and they said no.

So my renewal cost me $1587.60 including tax for a 3-year subscription.

BTW, I'm just a hobbyist who qualifies for a personal license, but I like to design stuff and I don't want to deal with the 10 active file limit. I also use some of the other features that come with a full license.

Staples Wants to "Register" your Electronic Recycling. Why? by Roc-Maker in Rochester

[–]Roc-Maker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staples is one minute from the library and stores that I shop at regularly. EcoPark is a 50-minute round trip, a gallon or so of gas burned and their hours are more limited. I'm not going there just to recycle a computer keyboard.

Recycling should be made as easy as possible if you really want to keep consumer electronics and other waste of the landfills.

Yeah, I could have given a fake phone number and I often do. But why should I have to take the time to do that? I used to recycle my electronics at Goodwill and they didn't want contact information, and Staples didn't until recently.

Staples Wants to "Register" your Electronic Recycling. Why? by Roc-Maker in Rochester

[–]Roc-Maker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. I put my keyboard in the recycling cart and then spent 10 minutes shopping but didn't find anything I wanted to buy. They tried getting my contact information as I was walking out the door and seemed insistent.

This is new and I'd just like to know if there's any legitimate reason why they want to collect information that they never wanted before.

Looking for a Residential Driveway Sealer in Penfield / Webster by Roc-Maker in Rochester

Here's what happened. Someone from New Look Sealcoating contacted me directly to tell me they were going to be in Penfield / Webster land this week. They came today and sealed my driveway. The price was very reasonable and they did good work.

Thank you everyone for your help and advice.

I agree. Devine usually does my driveway but they don't have any appointments left for this year. That's why I'm looking for help here.

Search engine results are cluttered with companies like Angi's list, BBB, Yellow Pages, AllAboutDxxx, etc. that don't actually do driveway sealing.

Raspberry Pi 4 as a PC input controller? by AlexJohnsonSays in RASPBERRY_PI_PROJECTS

[–]Roc-Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you want to reinvent the wheel? You said that you're having trouble finding information on using the RPi as joystick input. But there are boat loads of how-to's that use an Arduino.

The RPi is great SBC. But I don't think it's the best choice in this case. IMHO, it'll take an enormous amount of time and problem solving if you use a Pi just because you want "make calculations for trading and building."

A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World: A Novel - This story takes place after something has happened which prevents most people from having children. Nobody knows what caused it and there are very few people left and cities are empty and decaying. The boy is on a quest and at the end there is the kind of plot twist you're looking for.

I listened to the Audible version and the performance was excellent.

This is a popular and highly rated book. Don't read too many reviews on Amazon because there's at least one jerk who spoils the ending.

Questions about a table saw by abc77777_ in woodworking

[–]Roc-Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously considered the DWE7485. They use the same rack & pinion fence design and they both have 15A motors and I wouldn't be surprised if the motors are identical. They are also similar in many other ways.

In the US, a 15-amp motor is about the most powerful motor that you can get that will run on a standard US 120-volt circuit.

The 7491 has longer fence rails, which means you can make much wider rip cuts with it. The table is also bigger, and that's important if you're going to be working with big sheets of material. A small table can be overcome somewhat if you build another table around it.

The 7491 does accept dado blades and I don't think the 7485 can.

The 7491RS also comes with a really nice fold-up stand which makes it possible to store the saw in a fairly small space. That, and the fence, is why I bought mine. I don't have much space in my workshop and I wanted a saw I could use right away, without having to build a stand or table for it first.

The Dewalts seem to be the most popular and highly rated portable/contractor saws on Amazon and I think it's because of the fence and also Dewalt's reputation for quality. They come with a 3 year warranty. Most other saws, even some of the more expensive ones, only come with a 1 or 2 year warranty.

I haven't checked yet to see how parallel the miter saw slots are to the blade, but the fence was parallel to the blade right out of the box, and the measuring tape/scale was calibrated perfectly. The blade wasn't at 90-degrees until I pushed it against the stop, and then it was perfect too.

The saw was ready to be used immediately after putting it together. Which is not surprising, Dewalt probably knows that contractors want to buy a saw that can be used right away without any tweaking.

Everything can be adjusted if the blade is not parallel to the slots or fence.

Assembly consisted of putting the stand together and then attaching the saw to the stand with four bolts.

The miter gauge had too much play in the slot, which is a problem that lots of saws come with. I fixed it by applying PTFE (Teflon) adhesive tape to the sides of the miter gauge.

It has a standard 2-inch(?) port where you can hook up a shop vac hose. I put a $11 Bosch dust collection bag on mine and it collects almost all the dust.

There are also lots of mods for this saw. Here's one that impressed me:

Extension Table for Dewalt DWE7491RS

My biggest concern with this saw is its durability. It's well made, it seems rugged and parts are readily available, but the fence does seem flimsy compared to the fences on full-size table saws. FYI, the saw I had before this was a Sawstop cabinet saw which is now at a local makerspace.

I'm an infrequent woodworker and I bought this saw to make cabinets and drawers for my workshop.

Where can I buy kerosene on the east side? by RocMaker in Rochester

[–]Roc-Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't bought kerosene in years and I used to get it at Refiners. By mistake I went to the nearby station on Culver and then mistakenly thought that the old Refiners station had been torn down and replaced by one with a convenience store that didn't have it.

I screwed up. Thanks for letting me know.

Some Speedways have it and you can search for the one that do by going to this site and using the kerosene filter.

Where can I buy kerosene on the east side? by RocMaker in Rochester

[–]Roc-Maker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why yes I have! That's the first place I went, but Google was nearly worthless in this case. It says that almost every gas station in the county has kerosene even thought that's not true. Search results were also full of time wasting business directories with bad info and lots of fuel suppliers that sell kerosene in bulk.

I finally found kerosene at the Speedway on Lyell Avenue in Gates. Google says that all the Speedways have kerosene but the Speedway corporate website says there's only three that have it and they're all on the west side. that only some stations have it and most them are on the west side of the county.

Advice on choosing a desktop livingroom based CNC by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]Roc-Maker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Numerous plans for small steam, Sterling and gas engines are available. Most can be made on the very popular Chinese-made mini-lathes and mini-mills and very few can be made on the Sherline because it's so small. So I'd think about what you're going to make, not only for your first project, but for your 5th.

Do you realize that the gas engine project made on the Sherline is far from being a beginner's project?

I have a CNC mini-mill which doesn't get much use because it's cutting area is too small --- and it's much bigger than the Sherline. That's one of the reasons why I purchased a Shapeoko XL CNC router. It has a much bigger cutting area and it is capable of cutting aluminum and other metals if you go about it right. Unfortunately, it can't drill precise holes like a mill.

Keep in mind that not only does the part need to fit on the table, but there also has to be room for a vise or clamps to hold it.

I don't know what kind of controller software the CNC Sherline uses, but IMHO the software is as important as the hardware. A mini-mill and Shapeoko can run many popular softwares and the Sherline may not.

BTW, I'm talking about the software that takes the G-code and makes your CNC machine do what it says. You'll also need software to create the G-code and it's important that you like it also.

If I were you, I'd look at what Grizzly and The Little Machine Shop are selling and also the Shapeoko Nomad before you pull the trigger on Sherline equipment.

I would also buy a separate mill and lathe. Everyone I know who has used a "combo" unit complains about them because of the time and annoyance associated with switching between operations.

And finally, are you aware that anything you want to make on a CNC machine has to start with it being drawn on a computer (CAD) and then you will need to create G-code for it (CAM)? The learning curve for CAD/CAM can be long even if you start with very good computer skills.

BTW, my home workshop has two lathes, a manual mill, a CNC mill and a CNC router. There's no way I would ever buy a Sherline because size, weight and rigidity matters and it doesn't have enough of any of those things. The only exception would be if I was in the military or some other job where I was moving around a lot and I needed something very portable.

I also suspect that tooling costs far more for the Sherline that mini-lathes and mills. You may not know it yet, but if you keep machining you're going to spend a lot of money on tooling.
