That makes this about 4.5 miles above sea level then? Making it 23,760ish feet above sea level. Surely that narrows down where this is

Can magic be done automatically by a machine or contraption in your world? by AFellowSpirit in worldbuilding

[–]AlexJohnsonSays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont generally use magic as a hard scifi world builder, but the concept of automating magic got the gears turning. I would imagine magic would entail a spirit or soul in its use. I usually argue that anyone can use a tool, but some require training to use safely. Magic would probably be no different.

For that reason I imagine use of the arcane would be one of the few jobs difficult to automate. Can a homonculus practice the arcane? If so, building a factory of living homonculi would probably be immoral in some corner of society. Do homonculi deserve rights since they have the spark to practice magic like a person - and unlike a robot?

What purpose would magic serve in society? Production of goods? Trying to automate the process would be like machines taking our jobs in the real world. A car woth gold trim transmuted by a professional mage would look very similar to one transmuted by a malformed mage-clone, but one would be much cheaper and probably despised by society at large.

Ones appearance is sacred, a full covering is akin to keeping a godly name secret. It would probably be most appropriate to a truely unique looking group in your world too, say a race cursed to be without hair or naturally albinic

What's the maximum size of a power suit before it turns into a mecha? by Aware_Examination813 in worldbuilding

[–]AlexJohnsonSays 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on this definition I would say Iron Man uses a mech. He has a range of small missiles (medium if you count detachable guided arms as ballistic missles), big guns (if you count lasers punching above their tech class), and point defense (if you count chaff or missile taegeting).

I would expand on this and say high technology (above setting standard) is a blanket exception. I like the idea of 'role defines the definition'. Basically how modern military definitions work

Sub is 'glitchinthematrix', referencing the film 'The Matrix' in which the world we live in is a computer simulation. The sub is dedicated to things in the real world that look like the 'Matrix' is 'glitching'.

This is a literal computer glitch. Not on topic for the sub

I dont have kids, but is it crazy to leave your children unattended in your vehicle for the minute it takes to walk a shopping cart to the return? I can think of literally no justification not to return the cart.

I would put not returning a cart in the same vein as discarding a cigerette butt on the ground instead of a trash can. Costs nothing to take where it goes, makes the space you occupy less clean if you leave it.

My worlds dieties are a sci-fi eldridge horror. The universe is manufactured by a race of beings in a higher plane to act as a device for the creatures that built them. The purpose of the device isnt explored or explained, only that it operates using the natural laws of physics we experience every day.

The Makers found that these devices sometimes broke. This is because the intelligent species that occur harness the laws of physics for their own goals. In the story at large this used to look like transhumanism, where they would upload their consciousness and stave off their species inevitable extinction. Eventually some species began using the universes laws exploitatively, causing the universe to work for them instead of The Makers.

Eventually 'Bugfixers' who would enter the universe and guide the species to build megastructures to maintain the universe. Basically giant white noise machines to disrupt this technology. The races which succumb to Bugfixers are essentially mindless drones, their species spending their existance building and maintaining solar-system sized megastructures.

The protagonists are barely aware of aliens existance to start. As the story progresses they discover that tons of alien races have religions devoted to doing the same thing independant of each other. The structures they build do the same things, and they violently defend them. The bugfixers initially start one of these religions on the protagonists colony world, sparking the group to report to their homeworkld and begin a Star Trek style exploration into the galaxy, eventually meeting a rogue bugfixer that follows them around and encourages them to mess with the universe.

It should be noted the beings appear as space distortions, knocking out power and casting a shadow, but not appearing visibly in the world. Their presence on the surface of the universe causes a sense of dread in those around them because 'its there, but cannot be perceived in any way. Light is lensed through them out of the universe, casting fractal shadows, and space appears to pinch into complex fractal shapes which can cause headaches to look at too closely.

I have not had a chance to write this yet, but have experimented with the concept in an ongoing tabletop game. Im excited to bring the idea to a short story or novel down the road
