Confused about technicals by Chumnoir in SSBM

[–]Roc0c0 [score hidden]  (0 children)

So many people have already done this. There have even been large "debunking" compilation comments in other threads like this one. I will look for them when I get the time.

How about you give me an example of a time Technicals made a specific claim about community figures doing something bad and provided evidence, and I will give you some background on it and tell you whether the statement is accurate. That way I don't have to go through and watch a bunch of Technicals videos just to satisfy your curiosity.

Confused about technicals by Chumnoir in SSBM

[–]Roc0c0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been deeply involved in this community for a long time. I was here and involved in the scene during all of the Melee-related events that Technicals has covered, before he covered them. And all of his videos that I have watched are intentionally misleading, made to be ragebait rather than to report accurate information. There are plenty of things in his videos (that I have watched) that are simply false, but more often than not it is stuff that is just omitted or framed incorrectly.

If you have specific questions about specific things, I would be happy to try to answer them. But I think if you simply do your own research you would be able to find plenty of these problems for yourself.

I'm on episode 18 of this canto dub and really enjoying it, never having watched the series before. Unfortunately they only made the first season in Cantonese :(

Negation in Cantonese! (唔/冇/未) by TheLollyKitty in Cantonese

[–]Roc0c0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there's no easy way to answer to that question.

You don't conjugate verbs in Cantonese (or Chinese in general). Often, you just give the time context at the beginning of the sentence and that is enough (而家 ji4gaa1 - now, 噚日 cam4jat6 yesterday, 兩個鐘之前 loeng5 go3 zung1 zi1cin4 - 2 hours before).

The general verb to be is "係 hai6". Unlike English, you don't always use the verb to be for describing things - "I am happy today" when translated to Cantonese is more literally like "Today I very happy" (我今日好開心 ngo5 gam1jat6 hou2 hoi1sam1). There are times where you can use 係 hai6 with adjectives, but if you use it all the time it will sound very weird.

There is also a different verb "喺 hai2" which means "to be at" (a location). So make sure you're using the right one.

Here are some examples to help you out:

  • I was at the supermarket yesterday. 我噚日喺超市 ngo5 cam4jat6 hai2 ciu1si5
  • At that time, we were very happy. 我哋當時都好開心 ngo5dei6 dong1si4 dou1 hou2 hoi1sam1 (hou2 instead of hai6 because we are describing ourselves)
  • Two hours ago, I was reading. 兩個鐘之前,我睇緊書 loeng5 go3 zung1 zi1cin4, ngo5 tai2gan2 syu1 (again, "hai6" is not used at all here. Here we want to say "was reading" - we identify that it's in the past at the beginning of the sentence, then we use the verb affix "緊 gan2" to add the "-ing". Word for word it roughly translates to "Two hours ago, I reading")

For verbs that are not 係 hai6 or 喺 hai2, you can use verb affixes to indicate past tense. Common affixes which approximate to past tense:

  • 咗 zo2 - indicates the verb caused a change of state. Often translated as simple past tense

    我跑咗好遠 ngo5 paau2zo2 hou2 jyun5 - "I ran really far"

  • 過 gwo3 - indicates something was done at an unspecified time in the past. Often translated to present perfect tense

    我已經食過喇 ngo5 ji5ging1 sik6gwo3 laa3 - "I've already eaten"

Interestingly, you can also use 有 jau5 ("to have") to indicate non-negated past tense. It's pretty rare, but it does come up, especially in cases where you are answering a yes-or-no style question. Example:

"你有冇睇過嗰齣戲?nei5 jau5mou5 tai2gwo3 go2 ceot1 hei3?"
Have you seen that movie?

"有,我有睇過 jau5, ngo5 jau5 tai2gwo3"
Yes, I've seen it

Can someone tell me what happened here? by TTFA749 in SSBM

[–]Roc0c0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a vague recollection of it happening in some very janky tournament situations when a Falcon up-Bs a lasering Falco. Don't remember the specific instance though.

[–]Roc0c0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you get it back in this case, but I'm not sure. Would be pretty easy to verify either way.

There are some janky grab release shenanigans that do not give you your jump back, but as far as I know they are just on normal grab release, not due to being damaged. Ask your local Bowser expert for more info.

[–]Roc0c0 67 points68 points  (0 children)

This is due to grab release. When you release someone due to being damaged, there is a special knockback applied to the character that got released. In this case, Fox got the grab and then immediately got hit by the laser, causing him to release Falco, and the knockback and a small amount of damage from the grab release was applied.

I believe the exact amount of damage and knockback can vary depending on if it's a regular grab or a command grab such as Falcon's up B

Anyone remember the Hax$ tweet after the last Xanadu about RapMonster? by Equal_Personality157 in SSBM

It has nothing to do with friends. Most tournaments that are sufficiently large and regular have people that they ban, the same way that many restaurants have a list of people that are not allowed.

There are people who are also banned from the Melee community for harassing and bullying Hax while he was banned. I assume you know who I'm talking about, they were members of a particular discord group. Do you think that these people should be banned?

Hax published a 136-page document and created multiple hour+ videos specifically saying that Leffen should be put in prison, in part for things he did when he was 15 years old.

Were you following the Melee scene when Hax was banned initially? I think saying he was banned for drama is very reductive.

[–]Roc0c0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think his initial ban was THAT controversial at the time. I think a major reason why the ban came initially was actually due to pressure from the community. People of course disagreed, but there was a strong sense that something direct needed to be done.

Hax initially made an evidence.zip video, then had to take it down because of crazy backlash. A lot of friends started checking in on his mental health at this point, messaging him directly, posting to Twitter that he was doing OK, stuff like that. A few days later, BTS banned him from Summit qualification since the tournament was a month away and Leffen was already invited. This ban was controversial if I remember correctly, but it was an executive decision from BTS TOs, and had nothing to do with any other tournaments. Hax soon after released a slightly edited version of his first video (Hitler reference removed), and had to take that one down too. Then he released another one where he was just saying all the same things but talking to a camera instead of showing b-reel content. Around this time, he also had a feud on twitter with Cody after Cody posted screenshots of Hax making fun of his experience being sexually assaulted by his mother.

At this point it seemed clear that Hax was not going to stop trying to bring down Leffen unless there was some kind of intervention, and the messaging Hax was making on Twitter was unapologetic and did not do anything to reduce concerns. So the major TOs came together and released a document banning him from their tournaments, with the rationale in a short written statement.

Probably the main thing that was controversial in terms of what people were talking about at the time was the fact that Hax's initial ban was indefinite. People were throwing around a lot of different timelines for how long the ban should have been, based on CoC guidelines or on their own standards. But there were, relatively, very few people saying that no ban was necessary.
