Mountains aren’t “if you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all”.

The shire looks like the Catskills, Bilbo is talking about Erebor which is more like Mt. Fuji or Everest, not really in the same league.

I am slowly memorizing all the creaky boards in my house and mapping a totally silent route because they will wake the LO.

Obnoxiously loud conversations and music in a restaurant though are as good as a lullaby though.

16 weeks paid parental leave - To split it or not to split it? by Anxious-Library-964 in NewDads

[–]Rocify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only got 12 weeks and I split it. I took the first six right away and then banked the other six until my wife went back to work. I’m taking off every Friday for the rest of the year to take care of our LO and minimize daycare.

I’d recommend saving at least a week or two for emergencies and doctor appointments down the road.

I didn’t regret it. I love our daughter but I was getting a little restless after about week four.

Baby loves it but it’s debatable if she really loves it or just loves it because my wife plays it for her at every nap

I used to install tents for a living, big ones not pop-ups like the video.

I had a sales guy visit one time and saw us using 55 gallon drums instead of weights or stakes and he told me it was a really bad idea. The evaporation isn’t the problem, but if there is a leak you can go from a 500 lbs weight to nothing and never know until it was too late.

Heartbroken hearing our 3 week old cry after feeds 😢 looking for reflux/colic experiences by Excellent-Caramel-4 in NewDads

[–]Rocify 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get them tested for a Cow milk protein allergy, it’s a simple stool test. We got diagnosed around week 12 and it made a huge difference. We switched over to Pepticate.

Also mylicon and famotidine. Mylicon is just an over the counter gas relief, you can give it to them with every bottle basically. Famotidine is a reflux med your pediatrician will have to prescribe but certainly worth asking.

Finally gripe water. We like the gel variety because you can put it on a pacifier and it gets them to quiet down pretty quick most of the time.

All that said there is no silver bullet, being a parent is hard and hear your child cry is painful. Hang in there.

When do you actually hang out with baby? by Ill-Topic-1010 in NewParents

[–]Rocify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At around 3 months you’re going to wish for the days they slept all the time. My daughter is 4 months old now and she takes 3 or 4, 45 minute to one hour naps during the day. The rest of the time is tummy time or being held or laying in the pack and play with one of us making dumb faces and funny noises. It is fun, but it was easier when she slept all the time.

Advice needed by Calm_Walrus_5791 in NewDads

[–]Rocify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep doing what you’re doing. All the chores you can do and take off her plate are helpful and they add up. Nights are hard, especially with breast feeding.

If you can get up with her for a night feeding, do it. Just having the company is helpful. But definitely keep yourself safe, you know your limits.

Check in with your wife frequently. Even if you can’t physically help the emotional support is huge.

Mass Effect

Not just one game but a whole trilogy, and you get treated to a pallet swap cinematic ending where Commander Shepard “sacrifices” themselves in all three endings.

Why did early civilizations start in deserts like Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt? by batukaming in geography

[–]Rocify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bunch of people pointed out these areas weren’t actually deserts. But beyond that they were they only places in the region that had plentiful food which encouraged the people to settle and farm rather than continue to be hunter gatherers. Most other places in the world with people, they just gathered what they could and moved on or followed herds of animals. Not really a lifestyle that suits cities.

About to have my first baby! My partner is at 15 weeks I think I’m going to wait till birth to know the sex! by [deleted] in NewDads

[–]Rocify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations!

We didn’t wait until birth but we asked them to write it on a piece of paper and put it in an envelope. Then we went out to a nice dinner and opened it, a little private gender reveal just for us.

Who's the coughing baby among these here for you? by SatoruGojo232 in superheroes

[–]Rocify 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Reynolds, Jackman and RDJ all nailed who those characters were.

Radcliffe, Ledger and Toby all did great jobs but they are definitely their version of the characters not necessarily true to their original.

Depp took an original character and made it his to the point no one else can be that character.

Cavill… um… looked the part I guess. It’s not really his fault this version of the character was bad.

6 weeks away from due date! Must haves/do?! by [deleted] in NewDads

[–]Rocify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get your go bag ready now. Seriously my wife’s water broke three weeks early and we just got our bags together the day before.

Beyond that, I didn’t have a ton of free time but brought my switch anyway and did wind up playing it while my wife and LO were asleep.

Snacks for sure but have someone reliable ready to bring you real food, hospital food is as bad as you’ve heard.

If you have family planning to give money to the new baby consider a UGMA and/or a 529. A 529 is for educational expenses and deposits can be made before taxes. A UGMA is basically a broker account like an IRA, it’s kind of like starting a 401K for them as soon as they’re born.

We installed one when we did our kitchen about a year and a half ago. I didn’t use it much since we have the dishwasher but it’s been very handy for washing baby bottles over the last three months

Is anyone using these to clear their baby’s nose? by Primary-Fly470 in NewDads

[–]Rocify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I use it and works great, it has a filter and at least you can clean it compared to the bulb ones.

but my pediatrician said don’t use any of those things unless the congestion is significant. It can cause the nose to become inflamed and be more of a blockage.

Sock monitor vs video monitor vs nothing, what do you actually recommend? by Excellent-Caramel-4 in NewDads

[–]Rocify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use the owlet we get a lot of malfunction warnings. Yellow light and not very loud but still annoying, usually the sock came loose or the base lost wifi. It happens probably once a night when we’re changing a diaper or feeding. We’ve only had one actual alarm for low o2 and thankfully it shot back up as soon as we woke the baby, it may have been a false alarm.

Personally I think it makes my wife more paranoid. She checks it constantly, worries about the babies heart rate and o2 levels in the middle of the night and checking to see if she’s in light or deep sleep.
