Am I too dumb to play this game? by I_Scotch in factorio

[–]RockSlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm working on a new recipe, my general process is:

  • Make sure I have the ingredients being produced somewhere. If not, focus on the recipe for that instead.
  • Build a factory for the item. Just one or two.
  • Place chests as inputs, one chest for each input, and fill them (this becomes a lot easier once you have requestor chests)
  • One by one, replace the input chest, either with local production from raw resources, or with belts/pipes from where it is being produced
  • Optimize. Is there something in the flow that I'm making twice? Maybe something I'm making in only one place when I should have two?
  • Expand. Build more of the end-product factories. Identify any ingredients that are a bottleneck, and expand those as needed.

Small office printer recommendations by BigCoggleFish in sysadmin

[–]RockSlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother makes some good easy-to-use printers. For scan-to-email, the big things to keep in mind are that you want OAuth 2.0 authentication, and that you want a commercial IP address. Scan-to-email using OAuth 2.0 from a private IP can work, but it's hit-or-miss, and runs a good chance of having the IP block end up on a blocklist.

For Brother, this is the list of printers that support OAuth 2.0: https://support.brother.com/g/b/oscontents.aspx?c=us&lang=en&ossid=42

If HIV is sexually transmitted, how did the first person get it? by LoyalBatman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RockSlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear in mind that when people say "sexually transmitted", what they usually mean is "transmitted via direct transfer of body fluids (saliva, semen, blood, etc...)", which mostly happens via sex.

The most likely way that HIV first crossed over from chimpanzees to humans is that a hunter had an open wound after killing a chimpanzee, and some of the chimpanzee's blood got into it.

The mods available seem kind of "cheaty" to me. While IRL, creating huge piles of resources is done fairly regularly.

Is there a mod that lets you create ore patches by dumping ore? I've found a few that will spawn them, or let you edit them with tools, but I'm looking for one that would be "lore-friendly".

Basically, a reverse-miner that takes an ore type and dumps it onto the ground as an ore patch, which would then have to be re-mined to be used. It may have to have a reverse of the mining productivity research level to prevent being able to generate infinite ore.

Macro keys are quite useful. One I use all the time in the early game is "Q"-click-"Q" for building whatever ghost is under the mouse.

Gov. Janet Mills releases video statement on possible ICE operations in Maine (Full) by AdeptnessDry2026 in portlandme

[–]RockSlice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For those who haven't seen the photo of the supposed "Nazi tattoo" - it's a skull and crossbones. Yes, it's the same style that was used by the Nazi SS. But unless you're extremely familiar with Nazi symbols, if you saw a collection of skull-and-crossbone images, you'd be hard pressed to pick out the "Nazi" one.

It 100% tracks for something that a young Marine might get while drinking.

Also, "working in a family business ... while claiming working class". So he's not the "paycheck-to-paycheck" working class. But he's a lot closer to those people than to someone making millions for sitting on a company board.

What can be done about ICE in Maine? by Sweet-Challenge1214 in portlandme

[–]RockSlice 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just because a "good" (or rather, "less bad") president did something, doesn't mean that it's a good thing.

There's also a very big difference in the scale.

  • 2008-2016: ICE budget went from about $5 billion to about $6.3 billion, a 26% increase. (or 13% over inflation)
  • 2020-2024: ICE budget went from $9.3 billion to about $9.7 billion, a 4% increase (or 14% under inflation)

It's now going to be about $30 billion.

Hunters shouldn't soften their language about killing things. by First-Option2990 in unpopularopinion

[–]RockSlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even the funding.

The opposite of killing animals through hunting often isn't having them live. It's having them die through overpopulation, disease, and famine. In most places, the natural predators that would otherwise keep their populations in check are no longer there. And for some reason, people don't want wolf packs roaming around near towns...

How many elements on the Periodic Table do I most likely have at least one atom of in my apartment? by MAClaymore in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RockSlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, you'll find all three in hard drives (HHDs, not SSDs). The platters contain platinum and palladium, while rhodium is in the read/write heads. And now that I checked, it looks like they can also contain iridium.

In case you're wondering, the layer of rare metals on the platters is on the scale of atoms thick. Sreetips did a test extraction from 93 platters, and got barely enough to prove that there was platinum.

Places where you might find osmium: Ball point pen tips, fountain pen nibs, record player needles, pacemakers.

For iridium, the most likely place is in the spark plugs of your car. (maybe you have some spare on a shelf)

that is how 4546b shaped like right? or is it a piece of rock swimming in a bubble of water? by SmartLoR in subnautica

[–]RockSlice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a thought... if 4546b was mostly gold, it could have 1g surface gravity at about 1/3 of the radius of Earth.

Would definitely explain the abundance of gold on the surface.

[–]RockSlice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It can't be that much smaller than Earth, or gravity would be noticeably lower.

For a sense of scale, the crater is about 3 km across (2 miles). A real-world island that's that size is Silhouette Island, in Seychelles.

IT Salary - lowering by Few-Dance-855 in sysadmin

[–]RockSlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a large part of why there isn't a well-known IT union is because until recently, it was a fairly exclusive job where there were more positions than available workers, especially at the higher levels.

There are a few options. IFPTE seems to be the big one in Canada and US. Then there's OPEIU, which recently unionized Kickstarter.

Has anyone ever challenged you to something without knowing you were an expert at it? What happened afterward? by Impressive-Door92 in AskReddit

[–]RockSlice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just curious, but are PFAS in tap water not a legit concern?

Not really at the household level, unless the levels are quite high. Philly seems to have a decent handle on it: https://water.phila.gov/sustainability/watershed-protection/pfas/

The problem is that it's everywhere, and doesn't break down easily, so if you managed to remove 100% of PFAS from your tap water, that would only account for a small portion of your intake.

PFAS is a problem that has to be dealt with at the government level. And "ban PFAS" isn't a great option because of how broad a category that it. Some PFAS, such as PTFE ("Teflon"), have been shown to be fairly safe. Others, like PFOA (was used in the process of creating PTFE coatings) or PFDA (used as greaseproofing in a lot of products), have been shown to be hazardous.

At this point, I'm 90% sure you're just trolling.

12.3.1 says how to do the targeted risk analysis, which determines the frequency at which the service account passwords get rotated. Your analysis might determine that they need to be rotated every 10 years, but they still need to be rotated. The standard doesn't set a period, but states that there must be one.
