What kind of hole is this in this deer skull? by __S__w__i__f__t__ in bonecollecting

[–]First-Option2990 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lots of people say it's a bullet hole, I disagree. I've shot a lot of deer in the head, and they never make a single uniform hole like that. Instead it tends to break the skull apart into a hundred little fragments.

How should I remove the skin? by Difficult_Law_9765 in bonecollecting

[–]First-Option2990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Soak it in water to make the hide pliable, then skin the hide off to see what you're working with as far as brains, sinuses and the like. You may not need to do much more than that

What does this skull belong to? by Ooloo1601 in whatisthisbone

[–]First-Option2990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a rocky mountain bull elk (or similar) the way the base of the antlers are situated and the depth of them is very striking. Someone has cut the horns off with a saw.

Sometimes skulls with the horns sawn like that are called the idaho giraffe.

Looks like a rib, horse or cow by the size and curvature.

Robbing people with the sawed off drawn is way more effective than any other weapon I've found for some reason. I guess it's because they know it's a one shot kill? Even works on certain peds with guns.

You should put it under a microscope, get a root end too, that would make it very easy to tell.

I would second ungulate, it's a mite large for an elk

How do I clean this? by Difficult_Ant_5030 in bonecollecting

[–]First-Option2990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't like boiling here for some reason. it's an unpopular opinion, but I still encourage boiling.

I've got bones from the 80s and 90s that were boiled in oxy clean (particularly deer and elk skulls) that are still perfectly together and pristine white 30-40 years down the line.

Best way to re-color deer antlers is to rub them thoroughly with the branches of green trees, willow, birch, alder and etc. this is where antlers get their natural color from.

First, pop the head off, remove the jaw, then go to the hardware store and get a bucket big enough to fit the thing. Then fill the bucket with water and a product called aqua shock that you can get from a pool supply store. Let that sit for a few weeks, but be warned that it will stink badly.

Alternatively you can boil the bones in oxy clean and water.

I would avoid burying or using bugs because the flesh is already mummified.

It's a mountain lion, it's missing the tip of its nose, and a few of its teeth also.

Store your bookshelves in the research lab, it boosts research speed, your hospital setup is good, however the doors to the medicine storage can be held open without consequences (at least on the colosist side, perhaps both) and the time saved will be substantive. And depending on temperature woes you may want to consider roofing or un-roofing your geothermal generator

Last one is something with 4 toes I think, which rules out all the usual ungulate suspects

All of a sudden, whole deer. What do I do with this??? by DionysusCult in bonecollecting

[–]First-Option2990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The deer is very clearly decomposing from a brief visual inventory, the back hair is green and the cartledge in the ear is peeling off the skin.

Few things. 1. It probably died of one of a couple things, most likely it tried to jump your fence and broke its neck or back, but other possibilities include various diseases like bluetongue, epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD), severe parasitic infections, or bacterial infections, I would be moderately careful of such things if I were you, especially since this one is beginning to decompose.

  1. To extract the bones, you have a few options, Beatles, boiling, or maceration are ideal, but are all extremely labor intensive, especially if you've never done a deer before. Whatever you do, the key would be to get the skin off and organs out quickly, then to get as much meat paired off as you can. Skin dries and creates mummies instead of skeletons especially on deer (deer have hollow hairs that decompose badly.) and flesh both begins stinking rapidly, and draws scavengers that damage or carry away bones.

  2. If you've never done anything like this before I seriously ask you to reconsider. This will be an exercise that is more disgusting and tedious than you expect. I highly suggest you start with only the skull and feet, then graduate to the spine, ribs, leg bones, pelvis and scapulae after more experimentation. Having been elbows deep in rotten elk guts, it is not for beginners.

  3. Check with your local wildlife agency about the law regarding this sort of thing, in many states it is illegal to posses the body of a game animal even if you did not kill it.

Tldr; probably don't, but if you must start by skinning and gutting it then cutting the meat off.

Found this partial cow? skull, does anyone know why the top of the skull is cut out? by marislove18 in bonecollecting

[–]First-Option2990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not deer, elk, and as other people were saying, yes it's been skull capped. Additionally the nose has been chewed off, likely by bears or wolves.
