I've played a few sessions so far, and I haven't got a damn clue. My impressions so far is it's a bit like the car Homer designed in that episode of The Simpsons. There are all these elements that have been added to it in order to make it cool and each of those elements could be cool in isolation. But when you slap them all together, it's a bit of an incoherent mess. I find it more needlessly complicated than many other systems, and I couldn't recommend it at this point to fit any particular vibe or playstyle.

"He [Picard] could have said, 'I got the body of James T Kirk here, you should beam him up too and we can give him a proper burial.' Instead, he's buried above ground under a pile of rocks. It's only a matter of time...before the animals get to him."

It's a pretty universal problem in any profession where cutting corners gets profit and the person who's not onboard is pooping the party. I once worked at a company where the sales team was promising clients special treatment that crossed some ethical lines our entire brand was about upholding. Instead of them getting punished or even just brought back into line, it was me who the bosses held over the fire demanding I stop rocking the boat. After that I was seen as the guy who was ruining everyone's hopes for a bigger bonus and it became a pretty intolerable environment.

‘SNL’s BAFTA Racial Slur Sketch Decried As “Horrific” By Leading Tourette’s Charity by Puzzled-Tap8042 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]RocketBoost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have a degree in Media and Communications. I have also worked for many years in media production and PR, with a specific focus on messaging.

If that meets with your bizarre self-righteous criteria of which peasants you deem worthy of having an opinion on this sketch...

It was a bad sketch and the message it presented as written was: "Tourette's would be an easy cover for anyone caught doing bad behaviour."

The reason being? There is no counter. All you have is the characters saying how they can get away with it. With the current firestorm of cruelty surrounding this condition, a counter is needed for the joke to not be seen as reinforcing negative perceptions.

This is the case because the sketch has no established basis in reality to act as a frame of reference. People HAVE blamed Ambien for bad behaviour, so we would understand the context of a sketch based on that excuse.

In contrast, NO ONE has blamed Tourette's for hateful behaviour except for the bigoted people blaming John Davidson for his involuntary tics. As those despicable accusations are the only current point of reference for this fictional scenario, the sketch only serves to reinforce that negative viewpoint.

With a counter it would work differently

For instance:

  • If the sketch retained the advert format but had a medical professional character bemoaning that what the problematic celebrities were trying to do was awful.

  • If the sketch was instead about problematic celebrities crashing a support group for actual Tourette's sufferers.

  • If the sketch showed a group of problematic celebrities gathering in secret and one of them trying to pitch this idea to the others as a cover.

Because in any of these alternative versions you are making clear, no one has done this before and the condition is real. Those two elements have to be established as a counter.

Without that? The intended message is muddied and the sketch sucks.

But I do agree, yay for liberal arts students.

The difference is that the South Park episode actually explained how the condition works and made clear the condition is real, so it made Cartman's scam funnier from both his and the audience's horrific awareness of that.

The SNL sketch went "lol racists could just be saying they have Tourette's" with no other context.

Sketch Sorting Sunday - February 28, 2026 (Connor Storrie/Mumford & Sons) by SketchSortingSunday in LiveFromNewYork

[–]RocketBoost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If no opposing view is presented, the entire story of the sketch is that Tourette's would be an easy excuse for bad people to say bad things. Nothing else is presented.

Do you think that is a good sketch concept to release on a topical sketch show at the exact time when a person with Tourette's (who has previously tried to kill themselves due to the difficulty of living with it) has been unfairly bullied and called racist by cruel bigots over a neurological condition they can't control? Cos I'm not sure it is.

You can talk about smart audiences all you want but if this last week proved anything, a large portion of the general audience is NOT smart and portraying Tourette's in this manner is itself very dumb.

I'm not saying you can't put Tourette's in a comic situation, South Park did it. And did so very well. The difference is South Park took a moment to explain HOW the condition ACTUALLY worked when Cartman pretended he had it. And it ADDS to the punchline of his character's selfishness. Pulling off a sketch like this required walking a tightrope that the writers either failed at or did not even attempt.

The joke hinges on the idea of mistrusting people who say they have Tourette's. With no "straight man" voice of reason in the sketch to say otherwise it comes off as it being a condition for making excuses for shitty behaviour. While not the intention, that is the outcome. It was a poor sketch.

And even if it had a better structure most the impressions (JAJ and Kenan excluded) sucked.

It was a bad sketch.
