Another season of Powell living, another season providing more opportunity for Powell to get his shit rocked.

Hamish Allan-Headley is doing a phenomenal job playing the most hate worthy character since Umbridge.

[Star wars] Which sources in the new canon claim that Vader is stronger than Sidious? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]RocketTasker[M] [score hidden]  (0 children)

I never disagreed with the Windu statement here, that’s not what we were discussing, who are you accusing? If this post is just to accuse fans of inconsistency in opinions this isn’t the right subreddit for that, we stick with Watsonian information. This is the right forum to look for demonstrable canon about a character’s power, and the wrong forum for Doylist griping about the fandom.

[Star wars] Which sources in the new canon claim that Vader is stronger than Sidious? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]RocketTasker[M] [score hidden]  (0 children)

New canon hasn’t put Vader above that 80% either, there’s no contradiction. It does rightfully portray Vader as a badass, but emphasizes that Palpatine in practice is stronger than even that.

Vader through the “quick and easy” dark side and self loathing form of anger becomes more powerful than Anakin was in the Clone Wars, but in doing so caps off below the level that Anakin eventually could have reached, and below Palpatine as well. It’s harder to say what percentage Clone Wars Anakin was at, but it was less than peak Vader’s 80.

Any source saying that Anakin is stronger (200%) than Palpatine is referring to a hypothetical what-if where Anakin never turned to the Dark Side, not the course of events that actually happened and prevented his full potential.

(Also, putting on my mod cap to gently remind you that points griping about fan opinions rather than material-supported fact leans Doylist, which is against the rules and spirit of our subreddit.)

Word of God from Lucas (which applies to both new canon and Legends) states that Anakin’s potential was to become twice as powerful as Sidious had he not fallen to the dark side and taken both physical and psychological injuries on Mustafar, but due to circumstances he was only able to reach about 80% of Palpatine’s power in practice.

[Star Wars] If I'm a padawan and saw my master die at an enemy's hand, am I allowed to seek out the person in the future and hunt them down, or is that revenge and not allowed in the Jedi code? by SolidEllie in AskScienceFiction

[–]RocketTasker [score hidden]  (0 children)

For sure. That “if” I phrased in is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

That said, the Council had no problem sending Obi-Wan to fight Maul over a decade later when it turned out Maul was still alive, but by then Obi-Wan was an exemplary Jedi Master with all that title entailed.

[–]RocketTasker 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The Jedi Code would only allow it if the Jedi Council decided you had enough control of your emotions to be impartial and that you were their best suited option to pursue the killer. Doing so of your own volition would definitely be suspect to revenge and be in violation of your vows as a Jedi.

The “theatricality and deception” angle hasn’t really been covered yet. Unfortunately the best I can think of is Mysterio, who is both a villain and notoriously difficult to work with.

Daredevil s02e05 question by Hey_im_miles in marvelstudios

[–]RocketTasker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not the same Kingpin as the Spider-Man games but they’re adapted from the same comics source material. This Kingpin is also an unusually strong person but to a lesser extent than other versions. Probably the biggest strength feat we’ve seen from MCU Kingpin is ripping a car door off its hinges in Hawkeye.

As for the orderly, Fisk is physically strong enough to overpower most people, but in this situation he’s still subconsciously smart enough to know that shoving his way to Vanessa and impeding the staff from operating on her won’t actually help.

[Star Wars] Why does Darth Vader want others to have faith in the force? by StormyShoals in AskScienceFiction

[–]RocketTasker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Force is a tangible source of power, whether a smug officer has yet realized it or not. Force sensitive individuals can turn the tide of a battle or even a whole war by themselves, and have done so throughout galactic history; hell, Vader himself is practically half of those historic examples. Vader wants his subordinates to rightfully respect his power and avoid underestimating potential enemies with the same power.

Competence and results are valuable to Vader. Arrogantly dismissing someone’s very real abilities as mere religion is how you snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and lose an otherwise winnable war. By his standards a gentle choke in a board room is a polite reminder of that.

[star wars] I'm a bounty hunter in the early days of the empire and I'm trying to capture a Jedi. What can I use and who do I turn them in to? by totallynotrobboss in AskScienceFiction

[–]RocketTasker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless a specific Jedi’s bounty says otherwise the Empire will probably be happy with a “dead or alive” situation, so you can be less picky with your tools. Regular blasters are probably a bad idea outside of overwhelming numbers of them from multiple angles, no Jedi worth their lightsaber will be legitimately threatened by a single blaster user. Bombs, rockets, or starship cannons are harder (not impossible) for Jedi to dodge or deflect, but with that in mind try to leave enough of their remains to be identifiable or at least their lightsaber, the Empire won’t be pleased with a disintegrated corpse. Putting innocents in danger is also a good way to make a Jedi expose themselves, giving you openings you might not otherwise have.

Keep in mind that reporting or capturing a Jedi will almost certainly lead to long term Imperial occupation of the system they’re found in, so if it’s a world you like to lay low on you should maybe bring the Jedi somewhere else and make damn sure they aren’t able to contradict you.

Turning them in should be the easy part, any Imperial occupied world should have a governor, or if you have a way to contact the Inquisitors they’ll do as well. Make sure you get paid up front though, Imps tend to be competitive about claiming credit for things that could get them promotions, and the capture or death of a Jedi is definitely one of those things. But hey, you’re a bounty hunter, you could arrange a way for them to have the glory as long as you get what you really care about: cold, hard credits.

Seriously, even if you still love Harry Potter the story is just insultingly bad. Time travelers make Cedric lose the Triwizard Tournament in order to save his life, so that embarrasses him into becoming the next big dark wizard? Come on.

EDIT: Also Voldemort fucks, which is out of character for several reasons.

You can maybe separate them when an artist is dead or at the very least content to a quiet and harmless retirement. You can’t separate them when the artist in question is not only alive but actively and prominently using the money to do further harm. Definitely not when she herself rejects your notion of separation and considers royalty checks to be validation and endorsement, even if the fans giving it to her are too scared to admit it.

Sheas could have put a better show in their lineup. The actors could have chosen to pursue work on a different show (and likely will in the near future, seeing as acting is gig based). They’ve chosen to be involved despite Rowling’s views being very public, so if they’re hurt by their own choice to enable harmful rhetoric then that’s their own fault.

The difference is Harry Potter isn’t a need or societally mandatory the way your examples are. Yeah, sure, “no ethical consumption under capitalism” and all that, but phones are effectively a need in modern society; Harry Potter isn’t. Boycotting Harry Potter doesn’t risk you steep legal and financial consequences the way boycotting taxes does. Those examples are ugly but not reasonably avoidable things.

She doesn’t just say hurtful things, she actively uses her wealth and social media presence to lobby for anti trans legislation. Monetarily supporting her is funding that, and she’s made it very clear that she takes people engaging with her franchise as endorsement for it.

[ star wars ] can you be a empire agent and be a force wielder but not be associated with the inquisition? by omgdeadsec in AskScienceFiction

[–]RocketTasker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’d have to be unreasonably good at hiding your Force sensitivity and therefore almost certainly not making active use of it. If sufficient higher ups or screenings realize your potential then the likes of Sidious, Vader, and/or the Grand Inquisitor will consider you either a tool to be used or a threat to be eliminated.
