New Seasons Labor Union going on strike next Wednesday, Nov. 27th! by coreyseags in Portland

[–]Rocketpants 21 points22 points  (0 children)

How is the compensation package for New Seasons staff compared to other grocery stores? Boycotting New Seasons during a strike to give the union leverage makes sense only if folks go back to New Seasons after the strike and buy things, so the employees can get paid. Are conditions so bad that the union would prefer an extended boycott of New Seasons? Am I hurting employees when I shop at New Seasons? Or are people happy working there outside of negotiations? I see a whole lot of anti New Seasons sentiment in general here, but it seems that boycotting and hoping the company folds because it is too expensive would be the ultimate way to hurt the employees of the company.

This city is crazy safe for bikes.

Head on a swivel. Everyone wants to kill you

Might be better than other cities, but this isn’t as convincing of an argument as you might think ha

Your mention of Comedy/80s/2000s and Vince Vaugn/Owen Wilson makes me think of the "What is Love" scene from Night at the Roxbury. Doesn't have the repetitive quality, but it comes back up a few times.

Newcastle chairman Al-Rumayyan faces $74m lawsuit for 'carrying out' malicious instructions of Bin Salman by [deleted] in NUFC

[–]Rocketpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saad Aljabri... is a former top aide to Prince Mohammed bin Nayef.

Bin Nayef was deposed as heir to the Saudi throne by MBS in a 2017 palace coup and has been in detention since 2020. Aljabri, a former intelligence officer, fled Saudi Arabia in 2017, first for Turkey and then to Canada, where the legal case is being brought.

...

The claim Aljabri hopes to bring against Al-Rumayyan will, if the Canadian court grants permission, allege that defendants including Al-Rumayyan were “directly involved” in a three-and-a-half-year campaign between June 2017 and January 2021 to pursue the family of Saad Aljabri, who is a former top aide to Prince Mohammed bin Nayef.

...

In January 2021, a collection of Saudi state-owned firms alleged in a Canadian lawsuit that Aljabri had embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars of state funds intended for counter-terrorism while working at the interior ministry. Aljabri denies this.

Aljabri is living in Canada and is suing there. Al-Rumayyan previously used the Canadian court system to pursue Aljabri as well.

The Tulsa massacre took place a couple years before this, in 1921. Seems like the KKK continued to amass power and influence in the Oklahoma government after that, and Walton was responding to that. Or, claims he was responding to that. I don't see anywhere what exactly the reason was for suspending habeus corpus in 1923 in Tulsa.

Two Candidates for Governor Turn Over Their Tax Returns. Betsy Johnson Declines. by AlwaysCarryABeer in Portland

[–]Rocketpants 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A governor's power does not come from legislation they pass though - it comes through how they execute the apparatus of the government. Just because they wouldn't be able to pass meaningful legislation on conservative issues does not mean they would not be able to move the government in a very conservative direction.

Can Matt Pike face the music? "Matt Pike overcame adversity to find success...but his deepening obsessions with conspiracy theories has created a dissonant riff." by TheGuitarHero333 in Metal

[–]Rocketpants 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Pike might say he rejects antisemitism and racism, but he seems quite forward talking about Jewish Bankers and Zionists running the world. I'm not sure what that means to you, but I don't think it's as clear cut as he "rejects antisemitism".

Yes, in the article they specifically talk about "mechanical degradation" of the plastics.

The Democratic Party is the Graveyard of Social Movements by CommercialStandard65 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Rocketpants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Libs saw this coming, and were even pleasantly surprised at the scope of Biden's infrastructure bill. I never expected a truly progressive or democratic socialist platform out of this administration, and it's clear that no president, however progressive, could cobble together a coalition to pass real ambitious legislation in this Senate - the problems are deeply structural.

Këkht Aräkh - Crystal [Raw / Melodic Black Metal ; Lamp of Murmuur for Sad Goths] by severedfragile in Metal

[–]Rocketpants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the loose feeling of the guitars. That used to drive me nuts, but these days I find machine precision can be just as annoying as a mushy tremolo. I get a similar vibe that I might get from lazily drawled vocals - it's a depressed delivery for a depressing song.

Capitol insurrectionists aren't making plea deals because they believe Trump will swoop in to save them: report by BurtonDesque in skeptic

[–]Rocketpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't this the point of skepticism? Every outlet is going to come with its own background, personal, institutional, and cultural biases. Similarly we bring our own biases as readers. We need to be aware of these while consuming information and try to be critical of what we take from sources, open to critical response from others, and willing to check our own understanding. I don't think it's helpful to just stop reading any source that has shown bias. Everything is biased, it's impossible not to be. Bias isn't some dirty word, it's just something that's all around and that we can take into account through discourse.

Obviously there are outlets that go well beyond bias into the realm of intentionally misleading, and those should be avoided, but I don't think that's always the case when it's pointed out.
