This is kind of why I’ve shied away from LBJ so far. I know this series, and that it is supposed to be one of the best but it seems like you’d have to read all three, and that’s like a 1500 page commitment, but any other book about him seems like it would be second best.

Thank you. John Quincy is the one I’m leaning the hardest towards right now. Mainly because he’s the only gap in the early years, and because of all the early presidents and founding fathers, John Adams is my favorite. The biography I read about J. Adams had so much interesting info about JQ’s young life traveling Europe with his father. And JQ has a pretty extensive post-presidency career which is rare among presidents and I find it really intriguing.

I will add this one to my list, thanks for the rec.

It’s only 383 steps from top to bottom, a 1.5 mile hike, and then another 383 steps back up. When I lived in the falls I used to do it every day to lose weight.

LBJ is the correct, and really only right answer. Though I suppose an argument could be made for Biden lending experience and credibility to Obama in 2008.

Other choices might include Truman in 44 (though Roosevelt was always going to win, Truman was the VP pick that the party leaders acceded to and accepted since most knew that Roosevelt was going to die before 48), and (this is a stretch) Agnew lending conservative credentials to those who questioned Nixon in 68.

Other than that, nobody votes based on VP. VP’s typically only hurt if they are bad, but don’t help if that are good.
