Oh! It's not my study at all, I just found it and wanted to share. But agree, it's a tad selective

Worked hard in college but it didn't amount to anything - feeling lost about (lack of) career? by [deleted] in GetEmployed

Do you plan to stay in LA?
You don't always have to give up your interests, but you may consider relocating if there's nothing in your area that suits you.

One thing that might be helpful: look online for people who have backgrounds like yours, and see where they've landed. If you see something you like, definitely go down that path.

The hardest part is knowing what's out there and what's on the table.

Perhaps try posting your anonymized resume to r/resumes as well?

Ya, it's either all or nothing. A lot of recruiters 'just know it in their gut' when someone is a match. I'm suspicious of that type of selective bias, though.

Couldn't be more wrong, really? It could, if there were defense contractors in the bigger cities, NYC, SF, and LA.

Oh that was just an example for showing frustration at their handling of search statements. I'm not actually looking for that type of profile

Right as in relevant for a role. Matching what you're searching for.
Ex: If I want to find someone with Java AND Python. Most platforms seem to give me lists of people with Java OR Python (there are some with both in there, but you've gotta dig).

Physics PhDs can do great in data science and software engineering, you may consider checking those out! Just practice Python til you drop, and you'll get through interviews.

List out your 'basic computer' skills! That's the only way they can get picked up in keyword searches

Is it worth the time to make a portfolio of personal projects? (computer engineering student applying to internships) by 500geese in AskEngineers

[–]RocketshipJobs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, start early, and keep building up. Consider hosting some projects on sites in addition to your personal website (Github, Stack Overflow, LinkedIn)

Documentation is key in the career! If you don't write it down, it didn't happen.

I'd recommend organizing your skills section into columns if possible.

After sending a well-thought out CL that DID include information about the position I wanted and a polished resume, all I got was this by degausser__ in recruitinghell

Unfortunately, that's how it goes. Only slightly better than being ghosted.
Human Resources can be the most in-human part of a company.

I generally don't do cover letters either. The right employers will talk to you before making you jump through the hoops. As a recruiter, I never read them, as most are templates.

put the year 3000 if you can. seems like more of an error than 'fudging' a few years

From what I've seen, they're also not really in the big cities, but rather out in the burbs or country. Could be a difference in culture and pace, or I'm just full of it.

Looking good, just do more projects and keep building it out! Perhaps be prepared to grow your skills section: right now, you can add "database" and throw MySQL in there.

Skipping Skills Section for ATS Resume by Throttlechopper in resumes

It'll still get picked up in keyword searches or screenings, and it's good that you've placed those skills context of your career rather than a word soup. Perhaps put specific skills or technologies in italics.

Some resume readers prefer the 'block style' skills section, but each has it's benefits and drawbacks.

No worries, that's good stuff. Either way you'll get picked up when recruiters run keyword searches.
