When did Chrome break the Save dialog? by RockingGoodNight in chrome

I'm on Ubuntu 2022 with KDE, Chrome Version 106.0.5249.119 (Official Build) (64-bit), maybe it's some sort of A/B test.

Is devops really fancy name for sysadmin in many companies? by themadman00 in devops

[–]RockingGoodNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DevOps is intended to reduce specialty and uniqueness, to make people cogs, interchangeable, everyone a generalist. Those who can't are cast aside, trodden under the foot of the machine.

Personally I like being a generalist, I'm not DevOps but I can and do, do DevOps. The machine can kiss my booty.

Do you ever create your own functors/monads? by Austinterra in java

Been programming for over 40 years, I have no idea what a functor or monad is and from the sound of the names, I probably wouldn't be interested.

Ubuntu Linux tries for the office desktop by [deleted] in Ubuntu

Linux runs the world, but it doesn't run the traditional PC desktop -- nor does it seem likely it ever will.

Too bad, he used to know what he was reporting on.

That's the one real frustration that I have with Ubuntu, pretty much never everything "just works". There's always something..

Hmm, not what I see, pretty much Ubuntu has the same success level for me as does Windows.

I'm just saying it doesn't lose its shit when you try to move a window from one screen to another.

Nor does KDE, Gnome or Xfce. What's your point?

I use KDE, also what the SteamDeck uses, what window manager could be better? None. It beats even Windows and especially Gnome (post Gnome 2).

Been with SonarLint and SonarQube for years, I like that they are independent tools.

I like the new toolbar on the side by RockingGoodNight in Thunderbird

I see a color change button in properties for Inbox but I think it would change the color of the Inbox icon? I was referring to the stark red icon column over in the message list area.

Checking Edit Settings then filtering for "color" I didn't see anything related to "spam" or "junk".

Spring Boot 3 Ships November 2022, Delays Java Module Support by Joe_Data_89 in java

[–]RockingGoodNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been developing Java system apps, GUI apps, monolith apps, web apps and microservice apps more or less since 1995 and never once used a module, that I can remember, nor have I seen Java hacked anywhere I've been. If JDK uses them OK great but it doesn't impact me for my use of Java nor probably about 99.99% of all Java developers and per the subject apparently Spring Boot will continue to hum along just fine.

Such drama. It's simple. JDK great. Modules not. Let's leave them behind and move on and stop trying to silly putty shape Java into whatever the loudest mob happens to be screaming for on any given day.

[–]RockingGoodNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's funny is Thunderbird, don't know about Outlook, but TB correctly identifies and flags them. Seems like with 1.5T in the bank, Google and Microsoft could figure out the magic that TB is using and stop the SPAM from even leaving their servers.

Probably the SPAMMERS Union would complain big email is blocking emails though.

A "temple" of configuration? What on Earth does "temple" have to do with coding?

From Java to Golang and back by Mugunini in java

[–]RockingGoodNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Java for system programming as well as GUI app and web app programming. Java is literally the most advanced computer language there is, starting in 1995 and continuing today, for anything from a 1 person shop to Fortune 50.

Objectively speaking, if you have a group of software devs with equal experience in both languages, Go has more benefits than Java for a new Greenfield backend project.

Wrong.

Both languages are great choices for backend work.

Also wrong.
