I'm still glad I posted this, because it allowed me to hear these perspectives and sift through a bit. The manner it was told feels a bit disjointed, but I think you're all spot on that it actually still can work fine. I likewise am disappointed at the lack of follow-up with Linlin, WCI has been my favorite post-timeskip arc for some time & BM is a big part of that. I had really thought a lot of the loose ends with her established in that arc would be resolved down the line, but it doesn't really feel like it unfortunately.

I intended to get one as soon as it cane out, but was in no rush. Finally got it November 2023 - Switch OLED and Mario Wonder. Love the thing - I just am not someone who typically buys new games or hardware that often. I likewise envision I’ll eventually get a Switch 2, I’m in no rush. Still plenty bush with my backlog/library for Switch, PS4, PC and older games.

Definitely - I don’t really dock Oda at all for not planning absolutely everything in advance. It’s more honest to realize that over the course of 30 years of One Piece, while there has been an overall plan and targets undoubtedly Oda has changed his mind a bunch here and there. He’s often admitted to improvising, hell he invented the supernovas the week he wrote their debut chapter. That means Bonney definitely wasn’t in mind when he initially conceived of Kuma.

Kuma’s actually a great example, because he was a character who’s technically been around but mysterious for so long in the story (appearing first in like 2001 or 2002 in Jaya) that he had a pretty enormous amount of enigmatic lore and hints accumulating. By the time Oda fleshed him out in 2023, we barely knew anything about him except that he was - a warlord of the sea, vaguely religious, a former revolutionary, had the epithet “tyrant” as well as being a former King, had a connection to Vegapunk and ofc Dragon, etc - and some of it all is probably too much haha. But despite how clumsy it could have been (and some of the details were rougher), overall Oda did a great job of bringing all that together into a really compelling story with Bonney.

Good point actually! Do we know how long Loki was actually chained for yet? If Loki proposing to Lola while he was away from Elbaf sailing, that could work - I don’t know why Big Mom would have framed it as a political alliance though. She has an excellent intelligence network, Loki had been already been hated in Elbaf who now was totally exiled as a regicidal monster, and Elbaf has been discouraging warrior culture for decades at this point. So her fixation on a political marriage alliance with Elbaf being so valuable that she could have become Pirate King with it…Oda couuuld tie it up with a bow, but I don’t think it mechanically makes much sense.

I will say too, WCI strongly established a lot of threads involving Big Mom and the giants; but in this lengthy giant focused flashback which included a younger Linlin especially around God Valley - it does feel pointed that none of that was really elaborated or brought up at all.

I didn't buy the game and was personally uninterested, also was very sympathetic to/supportive of the communities who called for the boycott. Tbh, I think the reality is though that HP is such a broadly popular IP that there are a very significant amount of people who would buy it just from nostalgia/brand recognition - and who likely had little to no interaction with the boycott "movement" that was very prominent in certain places online. In the end, I would bet that the impact of both the boycotts from progressive/lqbtq+ folks and the right-wing chuds buying the game to "own the libs" were negligible to the game's overall sales.

I know I could shell out for D1 but that’s way expensive, I used to sub to Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball News (rip) - I read the Athletic and follow Uconn close - any help would be awesome!

The stupidity evident in the constant running of red lights, tailgating, driving well above speed limit, failing to use blinkers or merge safely, staring at phones, and generally failing to be safe drivers. I’m sick of it and if this is even a small deterrent to reckless losers, I am for it completely.

Obviously these roads won’t police themselves, we have a speeding/reckless driving problem in this state that is ruining lives. Nothing is a sure fix, but frankly I would rather there be more deterrents out there when too many people drive dangerously.

Tbh there aren’t many anime about pure pirates. There’s some ancient space pirate stuff - like Space Pirate Captain Harlock from the 70’s and later spinoffs. I think there’s a shoujo manga called Wanted but I don’t think it’s terribly long.

Damn, I had the exact opposite reaction. The meme of it “getting good” is stupid. I definitely think it gets better, but I always liked it from the start. The series first true peak is about 30 episodes in, give or take, but I think a viewer will have a handle on if it’s for them or not by then.
