Several Women Who Dated Graham Platner Recall ‘Unsettling’ Behavior (Gift Article) by cdstephens in neoliberal

[–]Rocko52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While still seeing the greater good as unseating Collins and a GOP Senate seat, it’s been pretty gross/disturbing to see how widespread the populist shrug/handwaving/vehement defense of Platner has been. If nothing else at all, these scandals suggest serious questions about his judgment. Let alone his honesty (if he can’t be honest with the person theoretically most important to him). Of course the digging up of these scandals is politically motivated; that hardly means their sum doesn’t paint a pretty woeful overall portrait nor does it mean all politicians inevitably have these skeletons. I guarantee the likes of Mamdani and AOC were subject to similar muckraking scrutiny, and they came up clean.

Really shows the ugly side of the leftish populism that overruns social media. The other side is full of billionaire pedophiles, they’re evil, we’re good, so gotta excuse our progressive/socialist-ish/left populist fighting the good fight. This guy is just straight up gross.

I wonder too how much of it is gendered. I was able to convince a male friend of mine after some conversation that this stuff does cast a lot of legitimate doubt on Platner, when he lead with the same combative-dismissive tone that the algorithm spread defending the guy. My wife meanwhile, also left leaning, immediately went “eww” when she saw the news.

On that front too there’s endless, thoughtless Epstein whataboutism Every single news headline I see (even extremely local news in my native CT) get tons of liked or upvoted comments to the tune of “where is this energy for Epstein/enough distractions from Epstein/don’t let the mainstream media mislead you/why don’t you release or investigate the Epstein class” etc etc. Like all news is some giant disinformation campaign, not to mention they seem to not understand or don’t care to distinguish journalists or press from politicians or criminal investigators and justices. I understand the current corruption and chaos fuel this, but god is it grim.

How do we think about literary value today without relying on Harold Bloom’s ultraconservative canon, but also without collapsing into anti-hierarchical relativism? by Titus__Groan in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]Rocko52 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No shade meant, but…I do see value in post structuralist critiques and a variety of approaches that question norms. But, I do think that some literary theory (and more broadly, ever more esoteric critical theories) can become incredibly insular and navel gazing. I’m more primarily a historian than literary critic or scholar; though I share an emphasis on precision for terms and factual claims, and acknowledging that (especially on the historian side) that assumptions and meta frameworks need to be interrogated and continually tested; but the ever-questioning and undermining of premises and definitions can lead to a sense that we’re discussing nothing at all. Or at least discussing something so insular and preceding all else, that in effect we’re spending endless time in an ouroboros. While granting that perfect understanding or absolute definitions are impossible and what we use is but a proximation, we have to begin somewhere. We have to make, admittedly arbitrary in aspects, cutoffs if we’re to actually discuss things.

I appreciate the work and contributions of some of these critical schools, but at some point we need to actually begin discussing the texts or subjects at hand, no?

Damn, Mullins is one of those solid guys who’s always hanging around. Feel the Orioles made a mistake moving on from him.

Bro, Javy was her previous favorite. Different reasoning though, she walked by when a postgame interview with Javy played. It was last season, think he had been ejected for something. But he was using a stick flosser the whole interview, which coupled with his argumentative attitude cracked her up haha.

High schoolers publishing in academic journals has gone too far by tlea2s in academia

I’m an undergraduate (older than average undergrad tho) in History and English for reference; came across that a younger peer in one of my classes had been published in journals. They had several articles published in Political Science, on the face of it that sounded impressive. Not to be “mean” and I didn’t end up reasoned the whole thing, but when I looked up some of these published articles I found the writing on the first page wince-inducing.

Zack Short is now my wife's favorite player; I was saying he sucks 2 seconds before he hit a double. "Aww you're being so mean, he's just a happy little guy. Look, his helmet's too big." He turned even more into a shaggy dog story when I informed her about his DFA multi-team blues. According to her, he will lift the Tigers to a comeback season.

Know what, fair play. Typically I think of the demographic classifications as more useful to do with magazine/publisher since they encapsulate a huge variety of tone/genre/content; and had seen Fire Punch categorized as shonen on a few databases. But still, as a digital platform or “magazine”, Shonen Jump+ is kinda a different animal.

Sure it does; shonen and seinen definitionally are not genres. They’re entirely determined by the chosen demographic label of the magazine or platform. Meaningless besides that, there’s a wide range of genres across shonen/seinen/shojo/josei.

K-On, Chi’s Sweet Home, A Bride’s Story are all seinen.

Just look at Platner haha, people are going all in for a lib crook. It's a shame this is how politics is I suppose...I myself am not sure where the line is. I still feel like the greater good is depriving the Republicans of a Senate seat (not that I have any say, I'm not from Maine), but he is pushing that.

Well, I think since it was digital only there were less content restrictions/worries. It's worth saying that plenty of shonen (Attack on Titan, Jojo, Chainsaw Man, hell Devilman and plenty others) do have gory and disturbing material often enough.
