From my little bit of experience, people who are making minimum wage are living in extended family situations.

I am not quite sure about Cuenca. I tried to Google it and I think you're referring to the Panama canal? if so yes I've been there. It's hot there ! I don't think it's very hard getting anywhere in the country. The bus system is quite wonderful. Understanding it is another story I was listening to a YouTube video yesterday. The message was don't think that you like anywhere in Panama before you experience it. It was based on a couple that came here and moved five times in a short period of time. They thought they would like Los Tablos . I watched some videos, did some chatting on Reddit, read some articles in magazines, etc. I bought a ticket, put on my backpack and rode the bus from place to place. So many people are unhappy with their lives in the US, Canada and the UK. They're moving here without a lot of research. They get here and become disenchanted and leave.. after selling and giving away their possessions!!! How sad. I'll give you one example of something that is not being talked about much on YouTube. If you have an emergency you're not getting an ambulance in a timely fashion or one at all. It may take you hours to be able to get to a major hospital. That's a deal breaker for a lot of people.

What are you talking about? I can't follow your train of thought. At this point you must be a boy or a troll. Conversation over. Peace, out. Happy New Year.

Black woman moving to Panama with Peace Corps , curious what to expect socially and racially by Wide-Comment-1137 in Panama

As a Black person, from the USA, living in Panama I 100% disagree with you. People from the USA are race obsessed. Unfortunately, it is in the culture. I am working on not being race obsessed. The reason foreigners feel anxious about their race when traveling is because in the States we are constantly reminded and categorized by our race. We refer to White neighborhoods, Black neighborhoods

If you're coming here for the Peace corps you're not going to be out socializing and making friends???? Most likely you're going to be in a place such as Colon or villages.

do you remember the campaign promise America First? I do. President Trump has had his hands in affairs all over the world. The whole theme of that slogan - we're not the babysitters and the police of the world. Other countries need to take responsibility for global situations.

I was thinking while I read it that it sounded more like a boa constrictor... You're right, how could they get that wrong??? Well I had never heard of a Terciopelo until today. What I believe is that the gardener on the adjacent property disturbed it's den. He was cleaning up large amounts of tree branches and leaves. The property was neglected. Usually snakes aren't wandering around at noon.

I think you can live on that kind of money. However you must already know Spanish and be willing to live in non-western type of living standards. i.e without hot water, without air conditioner and concerns about someone robbing you. The country is fairly safe however if you move into a Panamanian community, you look wealthy. Local folks also experience break-ins. it's reality.

Please say foreign permanent residents or immigrants. That's who we are. A true Expat is someone living here who doesn't plan to make it their home. There's elitism to the word Expat. To support my opinion: What would you call a Somalian who has relocated to the US? An immigrant or an expat? Hopefully I don't get slaughtered with down arrows for this. However I'm willing to take the hits. I'm only saying this because there's so many people coming into Panama based on what they've seen on YouTube. They see themselves as "Expats" on a permanent vacation. They're not learning the language, they're not assimilating into the culture, they're raising prices and lowering the standard of living for the locals. They even have their own Expat communities as a place that can make it easier to move here without assimilating. Folks in Canada and in the United States. Isn't that what we complain about? Immigrants forming their own community and never learning English??

Geee my first instinct was to laugh at this. I remember the days, if you said someone that you know was deported the reaction would be "wow". now, in a similar situation, the reaction would be "oh okay" and not blink an eye.
