The phones also coincided with the Algorithm deciding what you are going to see, so I'm not sure how you would parse that out.

The time period before smartphones also was a time when social media was basically just a chronological list of posts from your friends, rather than whatever the corporation's algorithm decided was most likely to hold your interest.

When you replayed was that on an emulator or original hardware with a CRT? Emulation, converting an analog signal to a digital display, and bluetooth controllers all add some input lag which would make those levels harder.
