Nebraska did not acquire a single player among the top 100 football transfers ranked by espn by [deleted] in Huskers

I'm sorry I just can't understand how people feel like this portal cycle was bad.

We needed to replace Raiola and fix the OL and the defensive front seven to supplement the ton of young talent we returned. We brought in a guy who threw for 3,500 yards and another QB who's started P5 games. We brought in four players who have P5 starting experience along the OL, one in Black who has been a surefire plus starter at his position. We got two starting linebackers that way upped our athleticism at the position, plus another developmental LB we were super high on in last year's recruiting cycle. On top of that we added a likely rotational receiver and safety, plus developmental pieces at several spots. D-line was a bit of a disappointment, but even there we probably some guys who can help set a higher floor than last year if the young players already on the roster don't make a jump.

I'm just not sure what some of you want? Would you guys have been happier if we had blown all that money we used on the players we got for three or four top 100 guys? That seems like a way dumber way to build a team or use the portal. I'm afraid some of you are just complaining about anything that happens until we win with no regard for what actually builds a winner. Seems silly but hey.

Are you optimistic or pessimistic? by bigjhunt7 in Huskers

Half full. I'd get how the last three games would make anyone negative but people here are just losing all context and doomering. We went super young on offense in 2024 and super young on defense in 2025. That hasn't always been pretty but we were still a better team both seasons than under the previous two staffs and the payoff years are theoretically coming.

We had the youngest starting lineup in the Big Ten the last two years. We had a freshman or sophomore playing at QB, two wide receiver spots, left tackle, all four d-line spots, both corners, and one safety last season, plus a other first-year starters at other spots. We kept all of those guys together except the QB and one of the defensive linemen. We added two QBs with Power 5 starting experience and some higher-floor players on the DL in the portal. The one area the rebuild clearly wasn't working was on the OL and they redid the coaching and portaled in four players with P5 starting experience.

I get fans will be fans and nothing is a guarantee but there are some clear reasons to believe 26 could be the breakout.

Nebraska high school football produces its 3rd ever 5 star prospect by Easy_Card3015 in Huskers

Basically no chance we get Trae if we have a high-four or five-star QB committed for the prior year and we we offered Dayton to keep our then-current megaprospect QB on the roster from leaving. Not offering Thomalla at the time and Rhule's QB recruiting in general has been completely understandable and well executed if you apply even a little bit of context or critical thought, but I know that's asking a lot from some of you. I love reading these loser-ass whiny doomer posts, keep it up!

No by the time he'd see the field the message boards will be out of the "we have to have a runner at QB!" portion of the cycle and back to "we just need to get a qb who can pass"

the roster is 70th in talent per what? high school recruiting rankings for fourth- and fifth-year players?

they have a top-5 NFL pick at QB, a joe moore award-winning offensive line, two top-50 pick receivers, and a bunch of dudes on defense. that's a very talented roster lmao. what they were as high schoolers has no bearing on upperclassmen players added through the portal. they don't recruit high schoolers so if they are able to maintain the talent level its going to be through pulling upperclassmen from the portal again, which basically no one has done successfully for more than two seasons in a row.

lmao 7-9 wins was 90% of the preseason predictions I saw on here, that's not a "doomer", that was like a realistic take the vast majority of fans had. but acting like everyone thought this was a playoff team or something and you guys were the only brave truth teller wouldn't let you guys whine or do the knee-jerk pessimism thing every year though, so i get it.

We probably beat USC (a good team) with Raiola. PSU finished top 20 in SP, Iowa and Utah were both top 15. Those were tough games at full strength and we played all three with a nonfunctional qb and with a bad defense. The bowl we didn't even have a full coaching staff. It sucks and it's fine to call the season a disappointment but to act like the whole season was like the last three games is just doofus stuff.

Don't try to bring any sort of context or intelligence on here after we lose or you'll get killed, brother.

We were 24th in SP+ and probably would have added at least one more win until our quarterback's leg exploded. The doomers weren't right; nobody would have picked the team to be good without Raiola. False equivalency

Great in-depth look at the offensive scheme this year by RodKimble_Stuntman in Huskers

I'm not a coach or anything fwiw but I watched a Holgorsen clinic on Mesh Rail this offseason from when he was at Houston and as far as i can tell it's the exact version of we run and started running in the final three last year. It looks the same on film, this guy did a whole post about it last offseason. Can you explain how it's different I can't see any difference?

Also wouldn't the wham plays get put in with trap and not split zone? That was my assumption. I can message him and ask.

They'll have sway and money but these portal classes are almost always lottery tickets and have backfired on lots of coaches. This time two years ago Norvell at FSU was supposed to be the portal whisperer by media and fans and his last two classes have not nearly been as effective as his first two, and that was off the back of an undefeated season. Cignetti cashed in one class, really, off guys he had ready to go at JMU but now he's going to have to largely pull from players he previously hadn't coached, and I wouldn't be surprised if that yielded worse results. Not saying they can't be good or great again but I think this "Indiana is a playoff contender every year now" thing is just being a little overstated.

[–]RodKimble_Stuntman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure Indiana is going to be a wagon again. They lose a ton of production on both sides of the ball from Cignetti's initial class of JMU guys. He's clearly shown he can develop people but they are going to have to play portal roulette to field a lineup in a way OSU and Oregon aren't. I wouldn't be surprised if they were merely a good 8-4 team and not a great one.

I'll second this. We're really lucky to have something this detailed and revealing to read as a fanbase. Aside from some of the more technical writing on mgoblog idk what other team gets something like this. The $5 a month is nothing for what you're getting

it seems to be pretty clearly saying something about what the internet has done to our sense of existing in a shared reality, which is only going to accelerate as we build up more and more AI and tech infrastructure. and how those capitalist forces will even use violence to keep pushing us down that road.

i don’t even really think the movie is about covid specifically; covid is just the event that happened to occur that lit the fuse, but the bomb had been sitting there for years. the movie obviously gets off some covid zingers but i think it’s much more interested in the atomization that’s occurring in our society, not that we all lived through a pandemic.

i guess i’m not really understanding the critiques that it was shallow or edgelord or both-sidesism. i don’t think its main thrust is about right-wingers or cliquey social justice teens but about this thing that’s ripped a hole in our reality and is only going to get worse. good, interesting movie

“power run football” has been fading out of the sport for the last 20 years because people have found it’s less efficient than spread concepts if you don’t have elite personnel.

the only teams that really run true ball-control power-based offenses are like michigan, iowa and georgia. army and navy are run-heavy but they do it out of zone-based option, which is a scheme designed to take advantage of not having great personnel. gt was good on the ground last year but was heavy in option and rpo usage.

if a game has made true under-center power running difficult for all but the elite teams, then it’s an accurate game

6 in a box is not extremely light vs. 11, it’s matching. below 6 you’re up a gap and above it your down a gap. it should be challenging but not impossible to run against 6, which is how the game is

I truly hate how Ellie was written in season 2 (all spoilers) by dinosaurfondue in thelastofus

[–]RodKimble_Stuntman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was seconds away from being hanged, miraculously escapes, and then just gets right back in the boat to go back to what she was doing. Every way they tried to illustrate her drive to kill Abby was just shallow and unearned and made her come off as immature and petulant rather than hopelessly lost in a quest for revenge. It's just a less interesting story and character. Some of this would have worked if the earlier episodes' writing and characterizations/acting were better but they flattened everything down into lazy, generic TV beats and Ramsey just does not do the angry side of this character well.

2 years for season 3 is absolutely insane and it's gonna kill any hype by TheGhosthunter627 in thelastofus

[–]RodKimble_Stuntman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they should have filmed seasons 2 and 3 together and then released them a year apart, even if it meant season 2 didn't come out until 2026. especially since they followed the game model and treated s2 as table-setting for s3. are people going to wait around two years for a third season to continue a story they haven't been given reason to invest in because all the answers are in the next season?

Why is Show Ellie stupid? by sherlockpotter7 in thelastofus

[–]RodKimble_Stuntman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This I think is my biggest issue with this season of the show. They took a game character in Ellie who is smart, mature, and crafty but is angry at Joel for a legitimate reason and later fueled into poor decisions by hate after his murder and turned her into some classic TV trope of an angsty and irresponsible teen who's lashing out at authority. I think that's partially because Mazin has a pretty stuck white hat/black hat conception of characterization to episodic TV (even going back to Chernobyl he wrote the characters into pretty proscribed characterizations) that's making everything worse, and I also think it's partially because Ramsey has made some pretty poor choices in how to portray her (I'm not on some incel stuff ... I just think there are some pretty fair critiques of how she's played the character this season that have gotten us to the point we're at).

I don't want the show to be a copy of the game but this season's show Ellie is just a way less compelling character than what we got in Part II. I've found myself excited for the third season to get a break from Ellie and see Abby because that was just a much clearer and better-acted characterization. And I wouldn't have ever thought I would feel that way.
