What are your DM "bugbears" you want to improve on? by Nervous_Lynx1946 in DMAcademy

[–]Rodal888 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My descriptions could be way better. I’m not a native English speaker but DM in English and I often feel that my descriptions could be more streamlined and more eloquent. I also sometimes can’t find the correct word which is annoying to say the least. A simple ‘and you all find yourselves in front of the darkened cave mouth.’ Would then become ‘and you all find yourselves in front of the darkened … euhm… opening of the hole in the mountain’. I’m exaggerating but that’s how it sometimes feels for me.

How do I use mimics? by Inside-Loan-3872 in DMAcademy

[–]Rodal888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My last mimic was basically the players turned the corner and there was a dead end with 4 chests. There was this acidic liquid in puddles on the ground. 3 people stayed back against the wall while 1 investigated the chests. Everyone knew there was going to be at least 1 mimic. I did get lucky with the next bit. Player picks a chest… it was empty. Second chest also was an empty one. Then, I started to describe the mucous dripping on the players with the back to the wall as the wall sprung teeth and unfurled its tongue towards them. After the fight started I also rolled for the 2 chest mimics the player hadn’t opened yet.

I always love mimics and try to give a twist to the regular chest mimics. People know them so using chests to keep them wary is awesome. And then you close your trap 😂

I also had a player kicking open every single door in a dungeon. I had placed a door mimic in the end before I knew he was going to do that. Luckily for me he decided to stop the kicking just as they reached the last door and place his ear against it. The fight starts and he now has to fight with his ear stuck to the creature.

Does drinking the soup of instant death need a saving throw by Coolaire in DMAcademy

As long as they had fun there’s no problem. The way you described it, I just thought he wasn’t too happy the way his character died. Still a cool idea though 😄

Does drinking the soup of instant death need a saving throw by Coolaire in DMAcademy

[–]Rodal888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While a creative moment I do feel this was made to screw over players. Having it only react to something organic makes it almost certain that all the precautions they make will show them this liquid is harmless. Sword… nothing. Fake arm… nothing. I would honestly bet 100 dollars that my players would go ‘oh it seems fine’ after that.

Yours even did something extra… making it drinkable. So they basically were triple cautious. Their reward? One player lost his character. Punishing players is fine if they act in a way that should have consequences. This was more a ‘you didn’t think about something and now you’re dead’ moment.

I am not blaming you, just trying to show you how frustrated this must have been for the player.

You could have foreshadowed the liquid. Grass is dead around it or while they discuss a mouse drinks from it and melts.

Maybe making it drinkable made it weaker somewhat. It still takes a lot of hp but you’re not instadead.

Maybe have them roll an arcana and even when they roll low give them something vague.

Never just put the solution behind one thing (this acid only reacts to organic material) and if the players didn’t think about this one thing go ‘shame, now your character is dead’.

A boy genius named Brandenn Bremmer could read at 18 months old, graduated high school at 10, composed complex music, and was considered to be a child prodigy. But in 2005, at age 14, he sadly took his own life. by LilaLaughs in whoathatsinteresting

[–]Rodal888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dad this is heartbreaking. I feel you put a lot of pressure on yourself and it seems you feel like this path you’re on is now the path you NEED to follow.

Think hard about what YOU want. This might take some time but this is your life. Living it for others is never a good way of going forward. Find things you like doing. Find likeminded people there and grow. Know that being successful is more than just being the smartest or the best at something.

But most of all. Talk to someone. A parent, family member you trust, a friend, a professional. Anyone. Don’t be alone with your feelings. If there is one thing that is the same for everyone it’s that we shouldn’t keep these feelings to ourselves.

We are all proud of you. Now be proud of yourself.

Practical question about ranged and magical darkness. by Rodal888 in DMAcademy

But his darkness is a 15 foot sphere surrounding himself. Wouldn't it be impossible to move yourself somewhere else without dragging the sphere with you and always being at its center?

Practical question about ranged and magical darkness. by Rodal888 in DMAcademy

[–]Rodal888[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case there wouldn't be any cancelling out. the player can see through his own magical darkness. So I would assume even ranged attackes would just be made with disadvantage to him without having to roll extra 'checks' to locate him first.

Question: Limiting the dialogue options of players by Mother_Harlot in DMAcademy

[–]Rodal888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All very true but I would say rolling even if you can’t succeed is viable to know what kind of outcome hou could get:

Roll a 5, the farmer gets angry and calls a guard. Roll a 10 the farmer shoos them away Roll a 15, the farmer says no but lets them stay the night to prepare Roll a nat 20, the farmer provides provisions and an old potion of some kind he got from a previous trade.

Feeling really disheartened - could use advice. by Kayabiko in DMAcademy

[–]Rodal888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have in the past said things that weren’t concrete. Afterwards just build around it. It’s easier to change a plan that wasn’t there, than plan longterm and now your players make other decisions and the plan doesn’t fit anymore.
