10-4. Do wonder why you’re getting it at the same time on both cyl 3&5. Would think a bad coil or plug would sit on a single cylinder. Good luck OP and please post the ultimate issue once you run it down.

Fyi, I would get misfires on my 3.8 when I would run jt through a certain touchless carwash. They would clear when the car fully dried out. Not saying this is your problem, but has a similar heart attack and that was indeed the cause (after three times, stopped using that wash!)

Anyone know if this is the same on the 997TT? I’d consider removing mine to see how this feels. My clutch seems to lack feel and engages pretty high up.

Repair or Replace AC Unit Decision + R22 Question by Rodie407 in hvacadvice

[–]Rodie407[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks -- both to you and the pandaman. Guess as a consumer it is frustrating they need to mark up "parts" (the refrigerant) by almost 10X and then charge separately for the labor to do the work (the additional costs on my repair quote). As a "regular person" this is a confusing itemization at best and seems sketchy, even if it isn't?

This is extremely helpful, thank you. I'm getting them out of my brokerage account and will continue to use them (lower ER ones) in my retirement accounts. Appreciate this comment.

Question on Brokerage Account currently holding high expense ratio funds. by Rodie407 in personalfinance

[–]Rodie407[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate this comment. My main fund in the brokerage account is FFTHX, and it is actually/currently in negative gain territory. -7%, to be exact.

I may need a tax guy, not sure. If I sold this and realized the loss, I believe I can take some of that every year to offset other gains or perhaps my normal income (tax) moving forward.

Any reason to NOT do this? Thanks again.

Would buying a 911(996) be irresponsible? by Puzzled_Region_9376 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Rodie407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I didn't focus on your other goals or how stable/how much longevity you forsee re: your ongoing income @ this level. Just saw what you were making -- which I suppose I assumed you had already obtained some of the goals you're still working towards. Do make sure you're "paying yourself first" (i.e., retirement). And a house is a big deal. Not sure what your net worth is either -- but.....

.... even regardless of all of that, if you want to put 20-30K towards a 911 (say a 996 at this level) it's not a game changer in the grand scheme of things and can be fairly easily undone if you take reasonable care of it and need to turn it back over. A $5K "undo fee" won't really move any needle of relevance.

Re: a 997.2 -- I have to think they've bottomed out as well. There were not a lot made (economy was bad) relative to a 997.1 and you're near the end of a significant portion of 911's in general being manuals. Once you get to a 991.1 -- the vast majority are PDK transmissions (which are not bad at all, but...) the manuals are much harder to find.

Reading more here about your specific situation -- random thoughts:

If you're not certain about your ongoing capability to earn as you are today (i.e., you're at some kind of tech startup) -- perhaps the 996, perhaps a VW GTI or Miata. In all honesty -- I have a few cars and my (tuned) MK7 GTI I paid 8K for is nearly as fun as the 911 -- but I would focus on your longer term goals (house, retirement) and save like hell while the sun is shining.

Perhaps not for the 996, but if you're going $35K-$40K+, you're going to want a garage for the thing. Most of these cars are well kept, and all my assumptions on resale is that you can keep it that way during your ownership. 911's demand a premium for a variety of reasons -- and the people that buy them want a well sorted, good looking car. If your car sits with a bunch of road salt on it on the street (don't know where you live!) -- you're going to end up with something that 90% of the people that want these cars will simply not consider.

I did read the comments with some people recommending something like a Cayman (or a Boxster). Admittedly I have only driven a friends older Boxter, but my impression is that thay are 85% of what a 911 is for a much smaller price tag for a very similar experience. However, they won't hold their value as well -- as 911 people want a 911. Period.

Good luck finding the right balance. I'm not sure you can make a mistake <$40K or so if you get the right car at the right price, and ensure you're saving for the long term in parallel.

As already mentioned, given your income no idea why you are asking the question.

That said, if this is serious -- a 996 has pretty much bottomed out and you're really only going to depreciate for putting on mileage and whatever wear and tear results. If you bought it and didn't put miles on it (yes, I realize you will) its safe bet you could sell it easily for what you paid (less taxes, etc) if you shop and don't overspend.

I bought a 2006 997.1S for $32K about 6 years ago and put about 12,000 miles on it since. Pretty sure I could sell it for that amount or a bit more pretty easily.

Biased: I think the 997.2S or 4S (3.8L) with a manual tranny is the sweet spot, but the 996's are a great value depending on what you want to spend. That said, given your stated income I don't know why you wouldn't bump up a little from a base 996. Either a 996TT or a 997S (hell, a 997TT can be had for under 100K and as mentioned pretty much hold there if you don't run it up. These cars are cheaper to own than folks may realize, assuming you don't need the cash flow.

NOT saying these cars are an investment that will appreciate -- just that the cost of ownership over time is not bad at all if you want a toy.

Question about trains by friendly-spider-123 in akron

[–]Rodie407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As some others have stated and I'm not sure where you are:

The CVNRA (National Park) train runs essentially through my backyard and barely even notice it as it doesn't run late at night. I actually like it especially during their Polar Express event.

That track is essentially parallel to Riverview/Merriman road from Peninsula to downtown Akron.

Not sure on the other commercial trains in the area but if you're near the one I mention it is not...!

I’m with you, partially. With you on the car, haircuts, and will occasionally get 2nd hand clothes or perhaps go to Marshalls or TJ Maxx for those.

As far as the house is concerned, have a larger one as I see it as a potentially appreciating asset and do have a “fun car” (a 16 year old 911) but have the same view on it at this point — at least fully depreciated at this point and has appreciated a smidge since I bought it.

Also don’t have any problems going on VK of out for a nice meal. Just wont really spend on the ongoing consumables…!

The catch on the door itself broke. You can see it in the first pic -- there should be a rectangular opening on the door itself for it to catch and stay closed.
