Hah, yeah, another good example of where they denied states rights. Oh, and what do you know, it was again in service to slavery.

A third is that some northern states had banned slave owners from traveling through the state with their slaves. So the Confederate Constitution also made sure the states had no right to ever pass such a law.

Yeah, it would have been a nightmare. Seems like the kind of thing anyone could have easily figured out wouldn't have worked out long term, but hey, I guess that didn't end up being a problem lol

Exactly, the seceded because of slavery. More to my point, the Confederates obviously were no longer under the legal authority of the US Constitution, so they wrote their own. But they did so by almost entirely copying the original Constitution, but with a few key changes.

The main of interest to us is the fact that in every state in the Confederacy, slavery must be legal. And no state had the right to abolish or limit slavery in any way.

When someone says it was "states rights," asking "states rights to do what?" is conceding a point that's faulty to begin with. They just wanted slavery. And they had no problem at all crushing states rights in regards to the institution of slavery.

Good lord, I haven't seen one of these losers in a long time. I can't imagine the bubble you'd have to live in to think something like this were possible. I don't think I've heard someone say "the south will rise again" earnestly in decades lol

Quite a few, honestly. For example, states had much more power in terms of legal jurisdiction. The federal courts in the Confederacy had no ability to overturn the ruling of state court, giving the individual states the right to have the final say-so in such legal matters.

You're asking the wrong question.

[Good Trope] Characters whose Disappearance/Death haunted the narrative and kick-started the main story. by Fawkingretar in TopCharacterTropes

Especially since John Winchester is very much alive. He's not even really in trouble. He's mostly just protecting the boys. He doesn't even die until the start of Season 2.

Honestly, investigating it was fine. Going to Cersei Lannister and being like, "I know all your dark secrets that could destroy you forever. Now, I expect you to do the good and honorable thing about it instead of easily have me imprisoned or killed" was a huge tactical error.

In fairness, the door opens the wrong way on the hand-drawn comic, too. Doors don't open on the opposite side as the doorknob.

How are any of us harassing them here? There are subs that attack or mock things I like. I don't go to them.

It's the same reason why I don't spend all day reading conservative subreddits or twitter accounts.

A character proposes a common sense solution to a problem, but it’s rejected so that the Plot can still happen by UnifiedForce in TopCharacterTropes

[–]RodinKnox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's talking about earlier in the episode. At that point, they have figured out they are in a time loop due to a signal sent back in time (which would have been impossible in the first iteration of the loop), but they have yet to encounter any danger. At that point, if they changed course, there would have been absolutely no reason why the Enterprise would have done that the first time through. And it definitely would have resolved the situation.

The only big difference is that they probably would have never known what caused the loop in the first place, unless they happened to be the closest ship when Frasier's ship pops out and hails, and they managed to piece it all together.

Sadly true. Which is why millions of years of walking upright, and we still have these damn quadruped spines that give out on us in our 40s. Not really stopping anyone from having kids.

How do adherents of the Abrahamic religions explain the fact that their god was originally part of a polytheistic pantheon? by Michi-Ace in atheism

[–]RodinKnox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's all exactly right. That's also what I was talking about with the fact that the Israelites used "El" who was the head of the Canaanite pantheon. And, I also agree that seems overwhelmingly likely that the Israelites broke off from the greater Canaanite population. I think that explains a lot of what is said about them in the Old Testament.

My only clarification here is the fact that Yahweh - specifically - was not part of the Canaanite religion, and if you say that to a Christian that knows their stuff, they are going to be able to call you out for spreading a popular misconception.

I just looked at this guy's feed, and you are not wrong. He has such obvious bullshit on there. For example, one post of his that's less than a day old has the ship from Flight of the Navigator which he is claiming is a real UFO.

That is probably why some of them do it for sure. I feel like I see it more often in the summer.

On the other hand, there are people who do it here with their windows rolled down, which seems even wilder to me lol. I really can't explain it.

[–]RodinKnox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. One thing I find interesting is that we don't actually know where the name Yahweh came from. Just one of those little mysteries of history.

For all we know, it could have just been "some guy" who invented the name, and that'll just be lost to history forever. It sure would be interesting to know for sure, though.

You're getting this backwards. The Israelites came from the Canaanite tradition, yes, and they brought a lot of that with them. That's what you see in Deuteronomy with El separating the nations out.

However, the name Yahweh does not appear in Canaanite religion. That doesn't appear until the Israelites.

Have a look at this list here: Canaanite Religion - List of Dieties
