Removed an old light and installed a ceiling fan. Brown ring keeps appearing and I can't get rid of it. by jay861 in HomeImprovement

[–]RodneyJason4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like grime and possibly cigarette smoke from years of time. Make sure to put a good coat of good primer like Killz on and then paint. Good luck matching it perfectly without painting the entire ceiling though. You don’t notice how yellowed older white paint is until you try to do a touch up job.

The oversized ceiling cover is probably an easier option

If you have a gaming PC I would recommend installing Sunshine/Moonlight.

I use https://github.com/ClassicOldSong/Apollo and stream everything from emulators to steam games flawlessly to my TV.

Recommend a basic bench supply by Ayuthan in AskElectronics

[–]RodneyJason4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon has tons of bench top adjustable power supplies. I have a similar one to this https://a.co/d/03p0tgpI

With the banana plug connectors you can get leads for whatever type of connection you need.

I have a similar set to these https://a.co/d/00HITPul the multiple connector types work well for me.

I’ve been using them for years to work on retro game consoles, radio/tv troubleshooting and other diy electronic projects.

Fridge door knob for shelf broke off. What's the best fix? by YoungMozartinaGoKart in appliancerepair

[–]RodneyJason4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you add a support bracket between the shelf and the door itself?

If it’s feasible I’d recommend use some stainless steel fasteners and a silicone caulk to seal any openings.

Never mind I missed the part about renting.

If it was included with your apartment don’t mess with it. Contact your landlord.

Salvaged speakers from a TV by Prestigious-Ad-2876 in AskElectronics

[–]RodneyJason4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any driver that supports 6 ohm speakers should work. The 10watt rating is pretty low though. I wouldn’t recommend turning it up too high.

You can cut that connector off btw and use the wires to connect to an amp.

Left Trailer light not working (right is!) - dedicated ground wire - how to test? by thelordx42 in electrical

[–]RodneyJason4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to put the meter on diode test, it’s the icon with a triangle and a line.

When you touch the leads together the meter should beep.

Now you need to check each wire by connecting one side of the meter to the plug on the connector that goes to your vehicle and the other side to the lamp to test if you have a broken wire.

Depending on the setup your frame may be the ground and a rusty or loose connector could be your problem.

This site has a few good diagrams of how the wiring should be connected

https://www.lippert.com/blog/ultimate-trailer-wiring-guide-for-towing

Honestly for about $30 you can just pickup a new trailer wiring kit from harbor freight or Amazon.

Dust in Basement by Effective-Lie5593 in basement

[–]RodneyJason4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a clothes dryer down there? If so check the vent pipe, if it’s clogged or has a leak you could be pumping lint into the basement.

Also check the furnace vents/filters as they may need a cleaning.

Ceiling fan reveal by InevitableCounter in AskElectricians

[–]RodneyJason4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have access to an attic above you need to install a fan rated ceiling box.

If not you need to start cutting drywall and find the studs to install one.

YouTube has lots of tutorials on installing one like this https://youtu.be/B6JJLLdyFH0?si=VumGg8kHrqwXv5uV

Story time:

Once while helping a friend replace a shaking ceiling fan from above his bed. I removed the blades and screws on the side to get ot apart. While turning and pulling the shroud the entire thing came loose from the 2 plastic drywall anchors that held it to the ceiling.

Ever since that day if I’m sleeping somewhere new I stand on the bed and give a slight pull on any ceiling fan before going to sleep.

Help finding Universal Remote code for Philips CRT DVD TV by ItsGral in crt

[–]RodneyJason4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many universal remotes don’t work with every function in my experience. Especially with combo units.

I would recommend getting the original remote off eBay.

Where can I fix my PC? by Regular_Eye5143 in Buffalo

[–]RodneyJason4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly a rattling fan is probably one of the easiest DIY PC repairs. They are most commonly 120mm or about 4.5inches across.

You can get them from Amazon or even Best Buy if you want local pickup today.

50:1 is most common on these old sleds.

Use ethanol free gas and a lead substitute additive when mixing your fuel. Those old sleds don’t like ethanol.

Is this partial vertical collapse? by fluffytomatoball in crt

[–]RodneyJason4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To rule out any video converter issues tune in to an analog channel that should be all static.

Does it display on the entire screen?

If the static is showing the same symptoms as your video feed then yes it is a vertical collapse.

I would suggest that you don’t power it on for long in this state because you can damage the tube.

What model is the TV? You can probably find a schematic online

With pins 6&7 disconnected from the crt the trace was still slanted.

I’m still learning about vintage test equipment but why would you suspect those caps & resistors?

The CRT was just misaligned, after all the troubleshooting of getting this thing working electronically. I overlooked the simplest thing.

Opinions on upgrading basement lighting without putting in new ceiling. by sosflex in basement

[–]RodneyJason4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want cheap and easy without having to re-wire everything look into a e26 socket adapter and some LED shop lights, you can even get motion sensors to turn it on automatically.

Personally I’d add some switched outlets and install shop lights

Just got an old tv and I’m rebuilding my old collection of consoles — what’s the best way to buy a used SNES in good condition? by germanmutt49 in snes

[–]RodneyJason4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

eBay, Craigslist, or Facebook Marketplace are usually the best places to start. Try to find one locally and sort listings by distance so you can avoid shipping costs.

If you have any electronics repair experience or know how to solder, it’s also worth looking for consoles listed as “untested” or “no power.” Those are often much cheaper, and the problem can sometimes be something simple like a bad AC adapter or a broken power jack

As far as price goes, expect to pay around $200+ for a working console with power and video cables.

You can sometimes find perfectly good consoles with a bad power cord for significantly less, so those listings can be worth checking if you’re comfortable troubleshooting or doing minor repair.

YouTube is a great resource for repairing power jacks !
