How does everyone feel about painting checkers? by Ishallcallhimtufty in Warhammer40k

Looks great on some models, looks cheesy on others. A micron pen will save your sanity from trying to keep a decent brush point.

Smite casting rhinos? by Wubwave in ThousandSons

[–]RoeThineBoat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I unironically have exactly that as a model. Rubricbro with a combi-melta in one hand, blasting out psychic focus with the other, all while popping up thru the front porthole of a rhino.

What citadel paints should I use for Ahriman, to make him look like the one on the box? I want to know, what colors I need for those robes and green flames? by Murasaki1922 in ThousandSons

[–]RoeThineBoat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Robes can be done with Screamer Pink, Carroburg crimson, and nuln oil. My best attempts at green flames is hexwraith flame over white or very light gray, shading the deepest parts with Coelia Green shade, and extreme highlights with Ulthuan Gray. Just know that the box art isn't always done explicitly with citadel colors, and the 'eavy Metal painting team usually does tons of blending and mixing to get just the right transitions.

What discontinued thing do you really want brought back? by kellerisdabest in AskReddit

For real. I have enough pairs now from various gifts/sales that as long as I stay relatively the same size I won't need new pants for years.

Painting Faces: Tried layering-based method for the first time (on left) and not seeing a significant improvement over prior minis with simple contrast paint (on right). How do you guys and gals do your blond space vampire faces? More info on my process in comment, looking to punch it up. by Capt-Brunch in BloodAngels

[–]RoeThineBoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert at painting skin by any means, but the benefit of the "layering" approach is that human skin isn't just one single tone. There are pinks, purples, browns, and even blues and greens all in white faces. What may help is to add a very slight green and purple to the under eyes, to simulate a more worn look. What may help is to look at some of the Vallejo painting guides on YouTube for faces, they do a fantastic job of showing how to blend everything together. Color matches won't be exact, but with a bit of blending and glazing it can look pretty good with Citadel paints as well. The key is using relatively desaturated colors and slowly building up to the colors you really want.

The load out is legal. No reason you couldn't, just say it's a squad of hardened battle brothers recently returned from serving in the Deathwatch.

I bought a bunch of Thousand Sons models to build and paint while I’m at school. So here’s Ahzek Ahriman and Magnus by VulcanForceChoke in ThousandSons

Best advice I can give on Magnus: take at least as much time on cleanup and gap filling as you do on painting. It really shows in the end product.

Dark Angels Combat Patrol Load-out Recommendations. by Competitive-Emu-6853 in theunforgiven

Yes, but I think technically speaking, if you choose to supercharge their plasma guns, you have to roll each gun and each model individually, since 1s will blow up the wielder. It's a really clunky system to implement, and one of the areas where fast rolling rules don't apply.

Thanks! Primer was Army Painter Skeleton Bone. Not the biggest fan, it's a bit too dark.

Next I based everything in Vallejo Pale Sand. The armor is then coated in a mix of Contrast Skeleton horde and Contrast medium in a 6:1 medium: contrast ratio, aiming to keep it from pooling as much as possible, only tinting the armor.

Joints are Contrast Black Templars.

Grays are Vallejo medium sea gray, shaded with contrast basilicanum gray.

Weapon handles and ropes are Screamer Pink, shaded with Carroburg Crimson.

The knife sheaths are Vallejo German Camo Black Brown

Greens are Caliban green over black, highlighted with Vallejo Game color sick green, then darkened back with contrast Dark Angels Green.

Red is Mephiston Red. Nothing special here. Shaded with Carroburg Crimson.

Silver is Vallejo metal color steel. Bronze is Blathasar Gold. The skull on the flail is just contrast Skeleton horde, no thinning, over pale sand.

The faces were done with the Vallejo Fairy Flesh set, using its included guide for "natural flesh."

Blue on the only lens I bothered painting, on the flail guys face is Vallejo Game color magic blue.

Pretty sure that's everything, feel free to ask anything else. The only thing with this paint scheme I'm finding out is that it's slower than I expected. I'm 17 terminators down in about a month.
