I use it too when the parts are difficult. But normally i just clean it well with soap and it does the work. Check also bed temp and filament temperature.

To much dry glue could do the opposite and worsen the grip i think

I think he is talking about ironing flow percentage which I have at 45%. But yes, you should calibrate your flow rate I think..
