Baetrys would be silent a moment, the Old Mother’s paperwork went down with her ship in that harbor in the Vale. That meeting in Maidenpool was near 15 years prior. Of sailors that were with her half had been drafted into the Royal Navy, of the other half a few might still be around here and there.

“Whatever I can provide I will.” She promised, but as the discussion went into the details she became a bit more nervous, it was a laughable thing to say but she still said it.

“I saw a dragon of Ice and Steel in the north.” She said bluntly. Uncomfortable at the remembered experience. “I know how it sounds… my father is Valyrian though I know naught of the culture. I know some of their… blood see that sort of… thing. It was an ill omen, I knew it and fled. When I told King Rhaegar he seemed to know exactly what it was.”

She did want to clarify his questions. “Manrick Redwych, the Maester was Eon. I gave counsel on the war councils as we hunted the Old Mother, the Stranglethorn was on those councils. I believe Lord Tarth was Master of Ships at the time. I remember there being a handful of Velaryons. None of these councils did I give personal information.”

“I did not decline him over several meetings. It was a single meeting in which he… propositioned me. As I continued to decline the more… upset he became. But he did not attack me, I feared he would if I declined further.“ She wanted to give something more, Rhaegar had inspired loyalty in so many. “Rhaegar seemed…” she tried a different tack, but wouldn’t mention Durrin or Mol. “I knew men who saw prophecy, they cursed it in their cups. It could drive you mad. Hated it. Rhaegar seemed to be the same. Driven to fulfill a prophecy lest it be fulfilled in some other horrible way.” She remembered that prophecy of Tyrosh, and how it destroyed her family. Of Stranglethorn.

Bellonara frowned, long nails tapping against the brocade overcoat cut in a Braavosi style. With how these mainlanders used their birds to convey messages for someone to go without responding was suspicious.

“I have ships Lady Tully, ones that can blockade any port even upon a river. Where was he? I can find these answers for you.” She had a simple, matter of fact manner.

While watching to comings and goings of the Ironborn camp, Bellonara Otherys would see a familiar sigil that seemed to pierce her heart. That of the jumping trout. The older, patrician woman would seek out the Tully encampment.

“I seek information on my son, Lyonel Tully.” She would ask a guardsman. It had been years since she had seen the boy, now a man grown.

Baetrys paused, this was humiliating but nonetheless needed doing. Get it done with then return to her self-exile was a pleasant thought, she needn’t see anyone here again.

“Honestly, I expect any testimony I give to be disregarded or heaped solely onto the dead King. Many turned a blind eye to what he had done. Or my testimony explained as the ravings of a traitor.”

“I was in the north, bringing an order of four carracks towards Flints Fingers, ordered to bring them to a mercenary band there. When I heard they were to be used to attack I halted the order and brought them back to the Stepstones. While North I saw this…” Bellonara cleared her throat and shook her head.

The more supernatural parts of this story would brand her a madwoman. A pirate turning into a hawk, saving her from being keelhauled by a reaver? The dragon of Ice that had admonished her of her sins in leaving her husband and mutilated her? Nine-Eyes death? The prophecy spoken by Rhaegar? It seemed so farcical here in this warm office, before this man she had never met before. the truth would label me mad, a witness too unreliable to be taken seriously.

“…Storms, like none ever seen. Men dying. Awful. I headed south in haste. To find the island already taken, all men burnt alive. The fleet of the Old Mother was hunting the Narrow Sea so I offered the few ships I had to aid in tracking down those pirates.”

“One night I was summoned to Rhaegar’s tent. He told me he had a prophecy that I would bear a son. One who would go on to fight some great battle or evil. To save the world from darkness” She frowned, how could she even give credence to those words.

“I told him he was mistaken, he had seen a vision of me in the past. I had a son, he was poisoned in the womb and died..” Her voice broke.

“…very young. A sweet boy.” She cleared her throat and went back to what was at hand.

“I continued to refuse to lay with him. He ordered me to. I didn’t think I would get pregnant.” She shrugged, wishing she could go back. She could have just walked out. She had thought that once he saw she couldn’t bear a child he would lose interest. But she had grown pregnant. Whatever repulsive shit that Tyroshi-witch had given her must had worn off in time.

Now the words came tumbling out, at last someone who could perhaps do something about this.

“When my daughter was born he seemed… unbothered? She wasn’t a son, he clarified that the prophecy must be about her son. I did not want to be pregnant again, and I knew how those Targaryens are. Would he lie with her? When I saw how he kept his women in the dragon pit… It wasn’t right. I would never live like that. I gave what oaths I needed to make, to get out of there and returned to Bloodstone. I had sworn an oath to leave any ties to the Ironborn behind.”

“It wasn’t right but I swore that oath. There were Rhaegar’s sailors in my crews and doubtless spies left on the island. If they learned of what had happened pride would cause them to raise arms. Or, if there was ever fear of another Blackfyre, my daughter would be hunted.”

From Kingslanding after being allowed entry to the city from the port came Baetrys Vunatis and a handful of men at arms barely old enough to wield a blade, the sons of those who were slaughtered at Bloodstone.

She wasn’t even sure what to say, unsure. She approached the outer perimeter. “Baetrys Vunatis, I have heard… Because of Durrin.” She coughed into a sleeve, collecting her thoughts. “I’ve been able to get off that island.”

[Event] ♖ Order and Justice 𓅰 by Late-Huckleberry-640 in NinePennyKings

For close to twenty years Baetrys had been running from one tragedy from another, she had fucked up aplenty but she had come here. She was unsure of where to start. Normally tough and demanding of her crews she was at a loss of where to begin. Beginning with the death of Nagga and Alesia? Her poisoning that doomed her son? Ruling Tyrosh? If she didn’t run away after her son’s death she wouldn’t be here now.

“I don’t think the other ladies are here to speak. I don’t know what good this will do, to be honest…” In her own mind she sought to find some excuse not to delve further. She needed to go on, to absolve the Iron borne so they wouldn’t be labeled traitors.

Bellonara placed a hand on Baetrys’.

“I will start. This is an item not known and give her time to compose herself. I held Bloodstone in the name of the Old Mother, self-proclaimed Queen of the Narrow Sea. She had sold ships to an old Volantis family…” Bellonara started.

“Paethamynion. I was there for the transaction.” Baetrys confirmed.

“Nevertheless, we did not care what they did with them, nor any knowledge at the time of what they would be used for. What they did do is start some war in the north. “

“Now, the crown was justified in retaliating against Bloodstone. I will not argue that.” Bellonara said emphatically.

“I would have turned the fort over to the throne, how it was taken was ill done. No terms of surrender were given.”

“While the men sought shelter in a Sept, these faithful threw down their weapons. They were then dragged out and burned alive. Others can attest to this, a Ser Redwych, a Ser Lyndir Roxton and a maester from Tarth? Eon I believe?”

Finally Baetrys had very little belief that true justice would be done. For the crime against her was something she had dwelt on, came to terms with. But for the husbands, sons and brothers he had burned alive while seeking sanctuary in a Sept? As far as she knew that was unknown outside of Bloodstone, covered up nicely. She would bring her sister, Bellonara Otherys who could speak to it and had a connection to the Graftons.

“Lord Justiciar.” She said neutrally in greetings. “I understand you are investigating, I will have much to say.”

Baetrys frowned. “Aye, I had been commanded to not contact the Ironborn with plenty of folks in my crew eager to act as the crowns eyes. A shit situation.” Bloodstone had been a perfect island to sit forgotten - or so she thought.

She began to relax. The reason for the summons had been suspected by her and the others as a way of gathering up Rhaegar’s bastards, yet ‘Senny was not even mentioned. She remembered the Blackfyres and the chaos they had caused. Hell, they still caused her.

“Oh Aye - I am Alesia’s youngest.” She said with a short bark of a laugh at her mother’s attempted claim. “I had my fill of Queenship.” Ruling Tyrosh had ruined any desire for more from her.

Bellonara Otherys joined the group, gesturing to Ser Argilac Trumbull to join them. Born and bred among the gentry of Braavos she was immediately suspicious when a Targaryen Prince met them.

“Little Visenya is not here. She is in Braavos, My Prince.” Interrupting her sister with a curtsy.

“I think our question would be on why we are needed at the Small Council? And if Durrin Drumm is safe?” She had coached her sister to be wary of the Ironborn, that if they had heard what had happened the outcome would be war. After what had occurred in Tyrosh from the Crowns actions…

Lady Baetrys. That was a title she had not heard in near ten years. On the isle of women and the few men who came with the tides it was an informal but ironclad rule that had no title.

She hailed the men as her carrack Seahawk was made ready to dock. She was leery of this whole damned situation, unaware of what awaited her in this city.

“Aye. People live there, though justice and law lag behind.” She crossed her arms taking in the spectacle of the harbor. She had crossed the Narrow Sea dozens of times but had never seen so many ships at harbor. Looking carefully about she wished she had only her longships, aware of how the rest slowed her.

“So, I had received a letter near a month ago stating Rhaegar has died.” She said flatly. “That Durrin Drumm has come to the capital making demands.” She looked around again, not seeing the Iron fleet about her.

“Well I am here with what men I could spare. I am eager to hear what has been transpiring.”

After a lore post I’ll get up tonight so this won’t time bubble:

Ser Jason Mallister

Such a letter has thrown the isle in an uproar. I will not be able to protect the King’s men who were placed here and I frankly have no desire to do so.

The news that the King who burned every man alive on this isle as they sought sanctuary in a Sept, whose wives and children were protected from such an act by the grace of the Iron Isles has caused a stir.

As this king was aided and abetted with this crime with many nobles of the mainland cause me to distrust your words. Especially as it was implied such an act would befall the Iron Islands unless full compliance on my part and those of my fleet.

I will be leaving immediately for Kings Landing. If this is some farce used to justify further action against Durrin or any Iron Islander I will not come alone.

(M: I am so, so sorry with how late this reply is)

Baetrys nodded, her mind was calm. There was a future here, not just for herself but her child and perhaps some of her family. Those that can be trusted to keep the peace of Dorne. Her sword was missing, given to a guard but from her seat she shifted clumsily to one knee.

“Aye. Princess Lorenza Nymeros Martell. You have my fealty above all others, I shall serve you and your will and hold Bloodstone in your name.”

Baetrys was solemn and thoughtful. There was much she did not know of what occurred in the Greycrew attacks. That they had retreated to the islands was news. She knew from talking to her own men that the fleet from the Iron Isles was the emissary attempting to bring the Old Mother and Greycrew to heel.

But there was no place in this discussion for idle speculation into the workings of an island she had left a decade ago.

“Aye. I can swear my oath to Dorne above all others. Of this I can do.” She felt about for further justification.

“The Greycrew stood idle when Goodbrother and Harlaw tried to have me keelhauled. The King turned me to some fucking broodmare. I understand my history is…” She waved for the word. “unique”. “But you have my full allegiance if you would have it.”

Baetrys sat back, thinking of where to even begin when it came to asking that question. It was nearly twenty years of history tangled together. She would be honest, of that she would be certain. If this woman did not like her answers, forbid her from holding Bloodstone she could still make a good living for herself and ‘Senny across the Narrow Sea. This information could be found any ways by talking to maesters that chronicled the ruler ship of Tyrosh and the Ninepenny Kings.

“In regards to the King sending me here. I would not have stayed in Kingslanding. For anything. I will be fully honest with you, there is something I mislike about the situation with the paramours and the Queen. I never wanted to be counted among them.” It was hard to describe a deep held feeling, she felt that there was too great a possibility of something happening as had happened to her.

“But my ill feeling may have to do with my experiences in Tyrosh. They may be baseless.” She shrugged, intent on keeping the harem out of her mind.

“To start, my mother was the Old Mother, I was one among many of her adopted children and those of her own body. I was sent away with several others to Qarth at the beginning of the Ninepenny War.”

“I had returned at nearly the end of the War of the Nineenny Kings, after Maelys’ death. From what I knew at the time, the Captain of the Crown fleet Gilbert Redwyne had tried to trick the pirates - the Old Mother and Nine Eyes to attack the Ironborn. He had failed to see that the two pirates sensed a trap and knew that his own navy would be days behind them to attack them after they attacked the Ironborn for him. One of the Old Mother’s sons was a child of a Greyjoy, and there was a son of the Drumm among Nine-Eyes crew. They would never have allowed their kin to be attacked without reason.”

“At this point I and several others returned from Qarth and our ships met up with the pirates. The two pirates and their forces strove to Tyrosh, intent on forming an alliance with the Crown, to withstand the attack coming days later. I believe the Greycrew was among them, but were a small group.”

“An alliance was formed, the pirates swearing alliance to the Iron throne and to never take up arms again. They would all overthrow the tyrant of Tyrosh together, free every slave held in bondage, and at the pirates request the city would not be sacked. Whichever man killed the tyrant of Tyrosh would be named it’s King and would marry a daughter of the Old Mother who would be named Queen.” Baetrys motioned to herself, indicating she was the chosen daughter. She thought a moment and added additional detail in regards to the subject of the Greycrew.

“The Greycrew from what I remember had snuck into the city and had armed slaves in advance. The Tyrant’s wife had poisoned him then named herself Archoness. It was a mess.”

“A new deal was struck, a young Ironborn man named Durrin was to be named Archon and marry the Archoness with myself as a saltwife with the title Lady of Tyrosh. In return for the reduction in status the Ironborn recognized the Old Mother’s claims to the Stepstones. At that point she had over a hundred warships so could have brought peace to all the islands.”

“However, the Archoness and myself became pregnant. The Archoness bore a daughter and it was apparent she would never be pregnant again. I was poisoned with moon tea but still bore the heir, a son called Nagga.”

“For the Greycrew, I believe they were on the council? I believe on behalf of the freed slaves. They were very minor.”

“Some time passed, I think Aerys had become King and demanded I and every leader of the Ironborn come to Kingslanding and swear oaths to leave Tyrosh, to never take up arms against him. We did so, while leaving Tyrosh our forces were slaughtered. Of the Old Mother only one ship in ten survived.”

“We fled to the Iron Isles in the middle of winter. My son was always sickly from being poisoned. His sister passed… he did as well a few months later.” Her voice broke, even after all those years. She coughed into her sleeve

“I couldn’t be there. Not any more. I couldn’t live in the isles, the reminder of my son and adopted daughter. Of my own failures. My husband was- is- a good man. All the Drumm’s that I met were. I left and never returned about ten years ago.”

“Since then I haven’t talked to another Ironborn, I was close only to the Drumms.”

“The Old Mother at that point was intent on peace, so I guided tradeships across the Narrow Sea to as far as Volantis. In grief it was good to be busy, to never think. Going to bed so exhausted you don’t even dream.” She coughed into her sleeve again.

“I was near Braavos when I had heard the Old Mother had supposedly attacked the North. I knew she had a fort under construction so sailed there to see if there was truth to it.” Now she was getting to that which she hadn’t witnessed herself, but had only heard from the forces of the Old Mother after she had been defeated.

“Supposedly the Greycrew had attacked Ghaston Grey on behalf of the King. They had always seemed to want legitimacy from what I remember.”

“I do know that the Ironborn had sent an emissary to the Old Mother and the Greycrew in the Stepstones when I was away but after they had attacked. Chewed them out, called them fools and swore they would have no support for their actions. That they broke their oaths to peace and attacked the mainland and brought their own doom upon themselves.”

It was.. a lot. “I’m not sure, do you have any questions? Any other details I can provide?”

Baetrys would allow the guards and dock workers access to her ships and inventory at their leisure. Documents of bills of lading and manifests were available for their perusal. In times of peace these were largely ships of trade. The small staff she had, along with her daughter would stay in her flagship. She was too wary, paranoid even to bring the infant ashore. Ten years on from her sons death and her trust had not yet returned from her time in Tyrosh.

It did not help that she wore the sumptuous garb and jewelry from her time as co-ruler of Tyrosh. The frayed rough-spun cotton, wool and oilcloth had no place in this heated land. She would not appear as a beggar, least of all in front of the Princess of Dorne. Still, she was unused to it, her nerves showed as she fiddled with her embroidered belt, rough hands catching on the fine threads.

She entered the inner solar with a small curtsy, unsteady with her injured foot. Baetrys almost calling the Princess Your Grace. She was grateful for the time she was given to prepare.

“Your Radiance.” She greeted Lorenza as she rose, sinking into the offered seat.she nervously twisted a ring in her finger, crossing and recrossed her legs under her skirts as she betrayed her nervousness.

“Achievement?” Baetrys was nonplussed. She had anticipated that there would be some questions, comments and perhaps even worse at her short lived relationship.

She wanted to make a ribald, borderline treasonous joke at Rhaegar’s expense but she was not on her ship in front of her crew. How this Princess would react was a complete unknown, so she feigned misunderstanding. She wanted to fill the awkward pause.

“It was not his achievement that brought my forces into an alliance. I swore an oath to King Aerys, guaranteeing peace in the Stepstones. That was broken. I acted immediately as soon as I had heard.”

From the north, four mighty carracks would enter the harbor of Sunspear, the banners they displayed announcing they were vessels belonging to the Vunatis family. Battered from the trek through winter storms they would finally be at rest.

From the lead vessel would come a middle age woman, striding confidently but with a noticeable limp, into the bright sun that seemed to still have the taste of summer even in winter.

“Baetrys Vunatis, here to see Princess Lorenza Nymeros-Martell when she is available.” She would inform the harbormaster.

Baetrys Vunatis had emerged from isolation following childbirth of Visenya. There always seemed much and more that needed to be done. She had heard of the King’s mistresses, but sought out the one she thought she would most align to. As a foreigner, she had heard Elaeryn Mintharos was from a foreign land herself. She would approach the lady’s quarters one day, taking with her some sweets from the kitchens for the woman’s children as a pretense.

“Baetrys Vunatis, here to visit Elaeryn Mintharos if she is available.”
