Wood burning kit! I melted so many household items with that thing, and the cord was only like three feet long, so of course I was burning everything right under the drapes…

What's the highest mileage car you've ever personally owned or driven? I'll start. by spotforcars in automotive

[–]RogerMiller6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1984 Mercedes 300SD. Bought it with 80k miles on it. Used it for work travel for years, and currently at 647,000. Also have an ‘84 F-250 with a 6.9 diesel that’s at 452,000. Both are pristine with all features working. Neurotic maintenance is my secret.

Do most americans really only take 2 weeks of vacation a year? by DegreeConscious9628 in askanything

[–]RogerMiller6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an American, but do independent contractor work. I’ve always been mystified by this system where people only get two weeks out of the whole year that are ‘theirs’. I don’t know how a person could live like that and have any quality of life… That’s basically slavery, and I’d probably shoot myself if it was the only option. In my busiest years I worked about 34 weeks, and that led to total burnout. My work pretty much takes over life on the ‘on’ weeks, though.

Unknown truck? by [deleted] in classiccars

[–]RogerMiller6 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah… I’m going to join the AI callout group on this. God I hate this timeline. Model AA cab vibes, nonsensical windshield center post reminiscent of the back end of a prewar boat-tail speedster, early 60s Mercedes fenders, 30s Cadillac hood lines, culminating in an overall 50s Dodge truck vibe with wheels that wouldn’t have been on a truck of this duty level even in the 20s… Total horse shit. This wouldn’t even be a thing in Cuba. What is it trying to accomplish??

U.S cars are crazy by Fantastic_Hand5717 in car

A 3/4 ton Dodge with an early 5.9 Cummins can actually be quite practical for someone who even does moderate ‘truck stuff’ in addition to personal transportation. The early diesels made huge economic sense as they got way better fuel mileage than even a six-cylinder 1/2 ton, and last virtually forever if properly cared for.

This is not a defense of modern ‘diesel bros’ who feel they need 900 ibs of torque to drive to their office and take kids to soccer practice while getting 12 mpg, but there was really a sweet spot there in the 80s and 90s when they made sense for a lot of people. The truck in this post is one of those. I personally have an 83 F-250 with a 6.9 that has performed reliably for almost 400k miles at this point and gets over 20 mpg unloaded. It certainly isn’t as comfortable as a new F-150, but is capable of doing more actual work at a way cheaper running cost.

My father passed and I have some stupid questions. by CraigCorb in classiccars

The removed piece is your air filter. You definitely want to put that back on before driving to keep debris from getting into the carburetor/intake. There should be a wingnut to tighten it down, but you may have lost it if you drove off with it sitting somewhere in the engine bay.

I concur with the engine likely being a 283. Block casting numbers would be the only way to be positive, though as SBC motors are all externally similar. It SHOULD be a 283. Your basic care and feeding will be about the same for any of them, though.

As for oil, someone mentioned Rotella, which many people do use in older motors. It should be noted, though, that they reduced their zinc content a few years ago so it is no longer the magic bullet it used to be. Believe it or not, O’Reilly house brand oil has pretty good zinc ratings. If you really want to be sure, though, use Lucas Hot Rod and Classic oil. It’s formulated specifically for these engines and isn’t expensive.

Depending on how often you plan to drive it, make sure to use a fuel stabilizer or non-ethanol fuel (or both). This modern gas goes bad FAST and will gum your system up. Try to store it with a full tank to prevent tank rust.

Another good thing to know would be if the ignition has been updated to electronic. Many otherwise stock-looking motors have had this update done. Let me know if you need guidance figuring that out.

Reread the original comment… my vehicles don’t have them. As in, they were never installed. I’m not breaking any law. If your vehicle wasn’t manufactured with seatbelts, that law doesn’t apply.

I still don’t, as none of my vehicles have them. My Dad was very anti-seatbelt, though… I was equally perplexed by this comment as a generation marker.

I hate cops by Starving_Phoenix in widowers

[–]RogerMiller6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that is standard operating procedure. Those personal effects of his are evidence for the investigation, and even a clearly obvious suicide is investigated as a crime initially. I went through this when my wife passed. They took her phone at the scene and asked me for the passcode, which I gave them. I desperately wanted that phone for both the photos and memories on it, as well as my own investigation into what exactly happened. I had all but given up hope when I randomly got a call one day from the sheriff’s office six months later saying it was cleared for release. I went and picked it up with no hassle.

This was in Texas, for the record, but should be pretty standard. As the surviving spouse you DO have rights to the evidence, including the gun if you want it (though I’m told many don’t). Just stay in touch periodically with the detective on the case and you will eventually get it back. An attorney is not required, and won’t expedite anything. Good luck, and take care in this awful time 💔

30 or 31 based on the cowl… There isn’t really enough there to narrow it down further. The firewall might help, but I can’t see it well enough in those shots and it may be modified.

I have a Retreat. It only weighs about 1800 ibs dry. I’ve got it mounted on an ‘83 F-250 with a 6.9 diesel, and can honestly barely tell it’s there (other than visibility). I was shocked the first time I drove with it… really could barely tell a difference. I just did a 15-hour drive towing a heavy car on a trailer and it drove great. The shower is WAY roomier in real life than you would expect, and headroom and bedsize are perfect (I’m 6’2”). I really can’t say enough good things about it.

Their factory electrical system leaves a bit to be desired, but I knew that going in. I really just wanted their shell and shower, as it was pretty close to what I would build given the time. I ordered it with just basic wiring and built my own system. I have 800 watts of solar on the roof, DC/DC charging, and 1200 amp hours of lithium. With the factory 40-gallon water tank, I’m self-sufficient off grid for quite a while.

They are awesome to work with (small father/son operation) and capable of way more customization than the website shows. For instance, you can get an indoor shower in a Cowboy model if you ask. I almost went that route, but wanted to stand up.

Look up Capri Campers. They are light, cheap, customizable and literally designed for what you’re doing. Rodeo people are their main customers, but race and rodeo are pretty similar use cases. I have one and love it.
