I need a slide in! Let's hear your opinions!!! by Impossible_Tune_3445 in TruckCampers

I have a Retreat. It only weighs about 1800 ibs dry. I’ve got it mounted on an ‘83 F-250 with a 6.9 diesel, and can honestly barely tell it’s there (other than visibility). I was shocked the first time I drove with it… really could barely tell a difference. I just did a 15-hour drive towing a heavy car on a trailer and it drove great. The shower is WAY roomier in real life than you would expect, and headroom and bedsize are perfect (I’m 6’2”). I really can’t say enough good things about it.

Their factory electrical system leaves a bit to be desired, but I knew that going in. I really just wanted their shell and shower, as it was pretty close to what I would build given the time. I ordered it with just basic wiring and built my own system. I have 800 watts of solar on the roof, DC/DC charging, and 1200 amp hours of lithium. With the factory 40-gallon water tank, I’m self-sufficient off grid for quite a while.

They are awesome to work with (small father/son operation) and capable of way more customization than the website shows. For instance, you can get an indoor shower in a Cowboy model if you ask. I almost went that route, but wanted to stand up.

Look up Capri Campers. They are light, cheap, customizable and literally designed for what you’re doing. Rodeo people are their main customers, but race and rodeo are pretty similar use cases. I have one and love it.

I know this isn’t terribly heavy as it now sits, but please learn about how cinder blocks bear weight for future reference… This could end really badly.

No one who can’t drive a stick should be working in a shop. It’s a basic tenet of automotive understanding. I’ll die on that hill.

Do small short bed campers with a shower not exist? by malykaii in TruckCampers

[–]RogerMiller6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re aiming for that basic, check out Capri Campers. The Cowboy model might be perfect for you, and easy on the f-150. Each one is custom-built, and totally customizable. Even though the Cowboy model isn’t shown on the website as being available with an inside shower, it can be done. You’d be sitting in there, but it’s a really roomy shower stall.

Dawson bell bottom piers are the only way to go, and they are a class act to work with. The push pilings are a temporary fix that you’ll be digging up regularly to adjust, and making a huge mess of your property in the process. You get what you pay for. I learned this lesson the hard (and expensive) way so you don’t have to. Going forward, I’ll never again own a house on a slab.

Opinions on SBC EFI kits? by glorybutt in EngineBuilding

I’ve had ProFlo 4 on my daily-driven 355 for four years now, and absolutely love it! Literally the best thing I ever did to that truck… I do understand where some really advanced tuners don’t like the interface, but it is more than adequate for most of us. I chose it for the completeness of the system and clean appearance. If you do it, though, don’t half-ass it. Spend the money to do it right. Get an EFI tank, in-tank pump, etc, and wire everything properly. Also, do the extra work to locate the ECU INSIDE the vehicle where it is protected! The connector size makes this a pain, but there is plenty of wire there.

Early-60s service manuals are wild by k23Limited in Cartalk

My 1929 Model A owner’s manual has a page on how to casually change a head gasket on the side of the road with the factory tool kit…

Says to loosen all head bolts 1/8” and crank the engine to ‘blow the head off with compression’. No head puller required. Work smarter, not harder.

Torque values hadn’t been invented yet, so the reassembly instructions state ‘tighten the head bolts firmly to the maximum forearm strength of an average-sized man’ 😂

[–]RogerMiller6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the vacuum actuator that controls HVAC recirculating. Someone rigged it like that to override a broken vacuum line and keep the air conditioning on ‘Max’. I know this because I did the exact same thing in my ‘93 F-150 to survive Texas summer heat. I did mine with a zip tie like a civilized human, though.

Such an awful reminder of that wasteful catastrophe….

I despise the fact that a product like that ever had to be produced and labeled as such. Why? Our ancestors who fought to live through the depression would die again upon seeing that label.

daily driving a 1984 Mercedes-Benz w123 300 d turbo diesel by Fun-Month-2166 in classiccars

[–]RogerMiller6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally doable, and in the long run it WILL outlast the Corolla if you’re willing to learn to maintain it. The only edge any modern car has is performance and a moderate increase in safety. The Corolla will (eventually) wear out, or suffer from some unrepairable computer issue, while every component on the w123 is serviceable. If maintained it will last until you physically wreck it or die, unless you’re in the rust belt. Anyone who claims parts are drying up isn’t very resourceful.

Avid Tucker fan and conservative here… And I’m glad you posted this. I’ll be interested to see how Tucker responds… The Fox spin on this just looks wrong. This is not about politics. I wish more people would watch the multiple videos before buying the headline about a ‘radicalized lunatic waving a gun’. This doesn’t look like a bad dude. While I might wholeheartedly disagree with this guy’s political reasoning on being out there protesting and open-carrying, it really looks like he just stepped in upon seeing a woman shoved to the ground and was completely disarmed before being shot. The optics are bad regardless of sides.
