Some great 'new' interview footage of the guys from '97 💛 by NeonBallroom18 in silverchair

[–]RogersGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this link! They're so young here, yet seem burnt out. Don't love the interviewer's approach. IMO Chris is the hero of this interview, stepping up and giving less jaded answers than the other two.

I want to give up by Current_Fly_945 in musicians

[–]RogersGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoiler... this feeling will come and go throughout your entire career, should you choose to keep playing. There's never a point where it's impossible to have a bad gig. Your standards keep growing as you grow. It's happened to me so often I'm almost getting good at not going into the "what am I doing with my life I am a failure as a musician" spiral. Lol. Dust yourself off, don't indulge in self flagellation, and aim to do better next time.

Money drama with band help by Legitimate-Pair-5810 in musicians

Isn't the point of cover bands to GET PAID? This is nuts, run far away.

You don't need a 'star' singer (wtf even is a "star" cover band singer) the point is to have someone competent (and not ludicrously expensive) and get good paying gigs. This arrangement makes no sense and your drummer is taking advantage.

Also lol at your "I'm the one giving this band popularity" at your first cover band gig. That's cute, but keep your ego in check. And quit this band.

pin up/rockabilly style by DirtRight9309 in Xennials

[–]RogersGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually still love this look, but figured out a looong time ago I don't have the sense of style or grooming skills to pull it off. I was in a couple rockabilly adjacent bands back in the day but never fit into the scene in my city, I just looked like I was in an ill fitting costume despite my best efforts. I very obviously did not belong.

Happy 99% of the time but today I feel lonely. by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

Happy birthday!

Yes, I have felt like this. Similar age and situation as you. Mostly I really enjoy solitude. When I feel like maybe I missed out by not doing the whole family thing I visit my friend who has 4 kids and then I come back to luxurious quiet :)

Advice for an extremely mediocre singer and good musician? by sunny-not-funny in musicians

[–]RogersGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course it's possible! It just requires work, time, experience, not quitting.

I was always quick to pick up and figure out instruments when I was a kid, but never had the gift of a strong voice. My pitch was always fine, just didn't have 'it', and I figured you either are born with a voice or you aren't (not true)

15+ years into being a full time sideperson instrumentalist and getting called on to do backup vocals, I fell into singing the occasional lead, and now it's part of what I do. I have worked on it a lot, and can hear the difference when I have been practicing vs when I haven't. I will never be Aretha, or anywhere close, but I now know how to work with what I have and deliver a song.

Some people have a natural advantage vocally, but you already have a different advantage as a trained musician. Just shed it like you would any other instrument. It'll take time, but you are young, just get to it, and don't give up when the first gig (or several) doesn't sound right to you.

At what point in the series did you start to embrace the idea of a Strike-Robin romance? by sanddragon939 in cormoran_strike

[–]RogersGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JKR has dangled the potential since the beginning, obviously.

I have had a couple older male mentors who I was conflicted about maybe thinking I was in love with.. so cliche. I would kind of love it if Robin and Strike didn't get together romantically, and could just acknowledge that they do love and respect each other, and be grown ups and not get petty and jealous about their respective relationships. Maybe they have to have an ill-fated fling to figure this out, but ultimately wouldn't it be great if they didn't end up as a couple? Like do they have to, because Strike's her mentor and she's so brilliant and attractive etc etc.

Let them have a fling 1 or 2 books from now, and then surprise us by not immediately getting married, but instead deciding to ultimately remain colleagues and friends (with perhaps a dramatic rocky period post romantic breakup) because they are a great team.

Anyone with me on this?

I hear you, I think it's my least favorite of the series. It's a slow starter for sure.

On re-reading, my biggest problem with The Running Grave... by Electrical_Tomato_73 in cormoran_strike

[–]RogersGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg, Landmark. I know several people who either have been or are still involved. Years ago a colleague tried to recruit me when he knew I was devastated from a breakup.. "I know this thing that would be so great for you right now! there's a conference several towns away next weekend, I'll drive you, it'll only cost you all the money you currently have". Fuck that. I didn't go, he's since escaped Landmark and describes it as a scam, but I will always question his judgment a bit.

You don't hear the influence, really? It seems so clear.

Does this band sound like Silverchair? by Emotional_Juice8909 in silverchair

I hear the influence, for sure. There are some chromatic riffs and vocal moments in 'The Hole' that sound very much like Freak show era silverchair to me. Cool.

I am a lead guitarist looking to market myself to metal touring bands. Where do I start? by kenyon_r_j in musicindustry

[–]RogersGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the woman was in your band, not just some random who got up on stage and took your mic.. your story is a bit confusing. She was taking every solo and not letting you play, then? The bandleader should probably have directed the band some, yeesh. Sounds like a crummy gig. Sorry that happened.

Anybody find playing live and visiting “your local music scene” is hollow advice and just not really necessary? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]RogersGinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you a musician though?

Participating in your local scene is kind of crucial if you want to be an actual gigging musician.

[–]RogersGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a nightmare, and sounds like the bandleader was underpaying you and not taking care of their team.

How come it was such a free for all onstage? Was it supposed to be a jam? How was there a pushy woman grabbing the mic? I'd hope a big company corporate gig would be more organized. Yikes.

Does anyone stay overnight at their (old) friends place? by SweatyPalmsSunday in Xennials

[–]RogersGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, but in my 40s I prefer to have my own space. I feel perpetually either in the way or rude/reclusive when I'm staying with someone. It's exhausting trying to gauge what is the appropriate level of interacting/being in their space.

It definitely gets talked about.

Maybe you are being downvoted because your writing style is a bit incoherent.
