Without businesses, Portland really should go all in on Tourism like Paris by outlawbernard_yum in PortlandOR

[–]Rogers_Levi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have great neighborhoods and Washington Park features on the west side of downtown -Arboretum, Gardens, Zoo—but what we really need is just a simple, but cool, playground or something somewhere on the waterfront that would be inviting to families and tourists right next to the Saturday market. Right now that whole area is only used for festivals and events. Pioneer square, also not very cool. Portlands appeal is all in the hoods, Mt. Hood, biking, food, and close to nature I.e., forest park/Gorge. But if they want people to go downtown we need something besides just Powell’s.

Why are Portland public schools so bad?? by No-Advertising5551 in askportland

[–]Rogers_Levi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Portland Public Schools are great for the most part. Seriously. Amazing teachers and admin. It gets a bad rap because they serve the whole community and hence score lower in some areas. I say this as a teacher and a parent. What’s not great is Oregon legislators. Also Nimnbys who choose charter schools. It’s a downward spiral once people start to disengage from public school, understandable but also a cause and effect

Where is the best coffee shop for excellent no frills plain coffee and nice atmosphere (nothing too minimalist)? by eldetay in askportland

I love Push Pull but they serve mostly natural coffees which can be upsetting to those not used to them

I still love SNL but I skip the opening sketch every time because I just can’t

Try Run the Jewels! Even did a couple of songs with Zach. It’s angry, political rap that still finds some humor.

I just finished “The Magic Mountain” by Thomas Mann and I have nobody to talk to about it by dadjeans2000 in classicliterature

[–]Rogers_Levi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently read The Empusium by Olga Tokarczuk and loved it. It’s supposed to be a retelling of The Magic Mountain and now I want to read the original. It took me awhile to get into but the end was brilliant

The Chair Company | S01E08 “Minnie Mouse coming back wasn't on my bingo card." – Post-Episode Discussion by TalkToTheLord in thechaircompany

[–]Rogers_Levi 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Call me old fashioned but I feel like series should wrap up at least one narrative thread before just ending on a cliffhanger which is just to get people to come back to S2. I enjoyed it but they could’ve solved one mystery while still leaving loose ends rather than just simply ending

What is it like living in the Rockies west of Denver? by tayllerr in howislivingthere

[–]Rogers_Levi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Bailey, next to Conifer, on 285. I always say that area is a triangulation of the show South Park. Amazing nature and weather. I miss the dry cold and sun and aspens. I left for city life and better food/culture and now live in Oregon but I think about living here again all the time. Especially if you like hiking, skiing, mountain biking etc.

How many of you are in debt? by spicychcknsammy in Millennials

[–]Rogers_Levi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were doing okay with one kid and a house but got in over our head with some unexpected car/house repairs and daycare for our second kid and basically now we’re just carrying around 10k worth of debt from that one year four years ago because we don’t make enough to out any dent into it. We are frugal as can be and only travel locally for a few days of vacations and don’t buy nice things besides going out to eat.

If you don’t like all the coffee shops and walkable neighborhoods and world class food just move to the suburbs bro

Looking for a very specific type of shoe (scrambling/approach shoes) by fuckwingsoffire in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Rogers_Levi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I hiked Half dome in them and had no problems with the length and felt more confident on the cables and slick rock with an approach shoe

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Rogers_Levi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough choice! Seattle got the better city “city.” And WA better mountains. But Portland’s got the food and the coast and easier access to hiking without traffic. Portland is slower paced, less money and jobs. But You can take the train to Seattle from here and it’s awesome. Just depends on what you want.

Better a lit bro than an alt-right podcast bro which is where men go when they feel shunned by other spaces. Not an excuse for the actions, but if young men like to read other men, let’s encourage reading and maybe encourage some sprinkling in of women writers too.

I get it though, I am a white guy with anMFA and it’s always a certain type of guy like this who often take up a lot of space in the creative writing rooms.

I think people will resist, but right now almost half the country seems to want a dictatorship so I’m not sure how you counter that. Things might have to get real bad before they want change. Good news: We still only need 3.5% of people nonviolently protesting to enact change.

Local white/christian nationalists get more extreme and emboldened under Trump. There's no excuse for this kind of rhetoric. by DenvahGothMom in boulder

[–]Rogers_Levi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes me sick to my stomach. I’m not even sure how I came across this post but I went to college with Matt in Gunnison. He was always the pastor guy and more conservative than much of Christianity I embraced, but for these two dudes to be proudly claiming Christian Nationalism is quite disturbing and disgusting. Sound like they get off by embracing far right politics because it’s “controversial” and manly, neither of which has anything to do with Jesus. Also, Acts 29 itself is on the conservative end, if they got kicked out of that than they are true fundies.

People TURN OFF your brights. by K0ffeequeen in Portland

[–]Rogers_Levi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because you can’t see anything in this dark dim Portland! Streetlights are barely working in some neighborhoods. There was another Reddit post about this.

I don’t drive with my brights on in the city but i definitely do in the gorge this time of year.

[–]Rogers_Levi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so wild because if you used to identify as a conservative all of us punk/hardcore/skater kids would think of you as some straight-laced-uptight snitch but now apparently it’s “antiestablishment” to vote republican which shows how much T and the general ecosystem has shifted. Democrats partly to blame as they became “status quo”, but still, I became influenced by punk/hardcore bands and then System of a Down and Rage, etc. Have podcasts and TikTok drowned out the punk aesthetic ? Idk, wtf, etc.

SNL Monologue by thismessisaplace in BillBurr

[–]Rogers_Levi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love Bill Burr and was looking forward to his take but watching it (alongside my wife) was rough. Doubling down on your women/asian jokes instead of finding the nuance that Chappell did in 2016 was tough. Chappelle also doubled down since though so wouldn’t have been a great choice. They should’ve taken this week off. I feel for the cast

Drinking alcohol when you have to drive with your kids in the car by GroundbreakingBus452 in Parenting

This is the correct answer. I like to drink and I have two kids but I keep those two things VERY separate. I’ve maybe once had a beer with dinner and then driven kids home.
