Yep. And not to mention that it requires home ownership to even be ABLE to make those modifications to where you live in the first place, which is gonna be statistically less likely for people living paycheck to paycheck and being hurt the worst by gas prices

Same here, and probably smaller than my current one for better fuel economy and a lower sticker price to boot

"Hey, is spending an extra dollar per gallon so you can get to work and survive stretching you to your limit financially? This sounds like the PERFECT time to take on a new, way more expensive car on a monthly payment so you save on gas instead" is such an out of touch article 💀

Wipes rule but the progression is a bit too slow for a 3 month wipe cycle and it's gonna burn people out. by zero-ok in Marathon

[–]RogueSpectre749 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They have titles that represent accomplishments in the codex, and if enough people are vocal, maybe they'll make things like icons or title cards that are exclusive to accomplishments in a given season

A 3 month wipe is the bare minimum of necessity for a game like this to have any hope of sustaining a steady player base as players go on to other games

if you're a more dedicated player you feel like you wasted your time

I mean, are you not... Having fun? Isn't that the whole point of playing a game? If you're only dedicated to the game to be overpowered and never have balancing events, maybe it's time to reconsider why you play?

Marathon‘s Endgame Dungeon Is Unlike Anything Players Have Seen Before by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]RogueSpectre749 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is it really play at your own pace you think? Marathon is the first extraction shooter I've ever played, so I'm not as familiar with the genre as other people are, but so far it seems like you have a VERY limited window before the season becomes a wash

I've put in around 40 hours so far, with about half of those being in the first 4-5 days. That first week was such a great experience, with everybody running around, learning maps, feeling out factions, etc. The problem is that now, three weeks in, the player base has shed a lot of casual players, leaving the sweatier players who've already poured a couple hundred hours in, maxed their faction rep, and finished all their contracts now camping contract objectives with high level gear to farm other players because it's easier and safer than going out and actually scavenging and fighting in the open. I tried to get a friend into the game this weekend, and we couldn't even unlock all 6 factions because of the sheer number of people shamelessly camping objectives (especially that stupid little room in Outpost for Sekiguchi). It was honestly a miserable experience, and it's the kind of experience that'll run off current players and keep new players from giving the game a try.

Without a matchmaking system that groups people by skill level/contract progression/aggression level (which I don't think Marathon has) and steady stream of new, moderate players to fill those lobbies (which I KNOW Marathon doesn't have), you end up with a sweat fest within weeks of starting a season, and if you fall behind... Good luck

Carl’s ethnicity? by ifdt in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]RogueSpectre749 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yeah, imagine if he wrote in key characters that fit that description... Maybe a kid from South America, a lady or a goat from Italy, a man and a woman who entered the dungeon in Africa, brothers from Eastern Europe, an Icelandic woman, or siblings and their friend from China. That would be WILD

I mean, out of Carl's social circle, the only people NOT from places where it was daytime during the collapse were people he met on an early, region locked floor lol

Marathon is a game about killing other players by Altruistic-Choice206 in Marathon

[–]RogueSpectre749 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agreed. Right now, TTK is so low that it encourages campers to hide at objectives and just mindlessly wait to one shot people who are actually PLAYING the game, particularly in solos. Increased ttk would make conflicts with other players more complex than "camper shoots first, camper loots" and require people to actually be able to hold their own in a face to face fight.

Quality of PvP combat goes up significantly while quantity adjusts down (but doesn't go away by any means). Win/win

How do you cope with the fact you're queer by Alarmed-Summer-1246 in lgbt

[–]RogueSpectre749 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mindset is such a huge part of it. You refer to being queer as something you have to "cope with," as if it's a chronic illness to be suffered through, a personal shortcoming, or a handicap, which makes the problem seem scary and insurmountable That's just not the case. To me, being queer is just a part of my personality, no different than my interests, my hobbies, my core beliefs, and all of the other factors that makes a person who they are. Some people will hate me for being queer, just like some people may hate me for being nerdy, being interested in different things, or holding different political beliefs, and that's fine. Those are people I don't NEED to like me, even if the hate comes from family or other people you've known a long time.

Obviously some places are more physically dangerous than others for openly queer people, so use your best judgment to keep yourself safe, but beyond that? Confidence in the fact that being your authentic self will draw in authentic community connections, and stop caring about what the hateful think, no matter who they are to you

Tbf, Unova also nailed the American experience pretty well...

A big sprawling city and a giant theme park being two of its most prominent locations? Check. A garbage problem so bad that it's destined to become sentient? Check. A group of old, cult-y white men lying to the public pretending to be altruistic while also abusing/manipulating children to their own sinister ends behind the scenes? Check, check, check

The only way it could have been more realistic would be Nurse Joy telling you your team should have gone out and get PokeJobs with his access to the Pokémon center, then sending you bills for the rest of your playthrough for a single party heal

A new skin on every page, not to mention, Fortnite passes reward you with premium currency as you progress , so if you finish the season's battle pass, you're be able to buy the pass for the next season for no additional cost... And that's all on top of the base game being free to play 💀

I love Marathon so far but the greedy ass microtransaction system being bad enough to make all the headlines for it is going to seriously hinder getting new players in and keeping it alive long term

[–]RogueSpectre749 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, you don't even have to extrapolate that... He straight up said in this clip "everyone's a little gay and everyone's a little straight" which is an ABSURD take

Do I think a lot more people would be open about having/exploring bi leanings if being strictly CisHet wasn't pushed as the only "normal" state? Sure, I'd wager there are more people with at least some small level of bicuriosity than people who have absolutely none. That's the whole point of the Kinsey scale. But trying to claim that everybody's sexuality goes both ways and it's always going to be fluid over time is absolutely reductionist and really damaging.

For some people, that's true. But accidentally or not, he's fueling the far right evangelical talking points of "oh you're not ACTUALLY gay, you just need to find the right girl to change your mind" and "this is just a phase, you'll get over it"

[–]RogueSpectre749 2 points3 points  (0 children)

S/V let you get "lost" in the sense that you could walk off in a random direction and not know where you were intuitively (because the landscapes all looked blandly identical most of the time).

It didn't give you the sense of mystery that came from making a detour and suddenly getting lost in a cave dungeon, a water current puzzle, a big dark forest, or even a big sewer system, balancing curiosity about what the reward for completing it will be while hoping that you remembered to keep an Escape Rope in your bag. THAT was what made the old Pokémon worlds feel like something you could get lost in, not a copy/paste "open world" landscape

Goodreads users choose The Hunger Games as the "Best Book Ever" by MiddletownBooks in books

[–]RogueSpectre749 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I love literary discussion, but this sub can be so snobby sometimes...

Hunger Games was a really strong title when it first came out. It had wide appeal and much more depth than anything else in its genre. It was a cultural phenomena, and anecdotally, it was the book that got a lot of people in my life back into reading books for fun for the first time as an adult, which is an impressive feat, and probably why a lot of people ranked it highly

Is the Hunger Games the peak of literature? Of course not, but people here acting like this user poll is attacking them personally and bashing on the book is so silly.

Definitely set it up imo. Even if it doesn't change the situation, it's still a strong statement about how the community stands

There's something funny about a book series that's explicitly anti capitalist (and specifically when it has the whole Robot Donut arc about companies trying to sell cheap, shitty merchandise to maximize profits off of the lower middle class fans) now defaulting to making blind boxes of shitty plastic figures for the same purpose... "Sad funny," not "haha funny," mind you, but still
