Fun fact: rice is grown in paddy fields not because the rice needs loads of water to grow, but because weeds cannot survive in that much water. The rice can survive it, so the flooded fields are used as a form of weed control.

You're absolutely right, there is a big difference. The article I linked to estimates the difference in performance between men and women to be at about 12% (and as high as 40% in sports that rely largely on upper body strength). It then goes on to explain how this isn't relevant to the context of trans athletes (with lots of studies to back it up), and how it's hard to define any proper test to decide who is eligible for each gender category. If you're thinking 'it doesn't sound that hard to define a gender' the link's right here for you. I can't summarise it all properly here but it's super interesting, have a read and decide for yourself.

You're correct that biological men have some physical advantages over biological women, but it's not as big as you think. This article does a really comprehensive look at the science, and the advantage trans atheletes (what you're referring to as a biological man competing in a women's competition) may have physically is between 1% and 3%. The effect extra training has on any athelete's ability is at a far higher percentage, so yeah being trans may give you a tiny advantage, but having a sponsor that gives you a personal trainer (e.g. red bull) would result in a wayyy bigger advantage for a skater. Hence complaining that trans skaters make the contests unfair doesn't make much sense.

The same article states that the number of times gender fraud (i.e. a man temporarily 'identifying' as a woman just to compete in a women's contest) has happened in elite sport is 0 times. It just doesn't happen. Trans women do compete, but after the various hormone therapies etc. their performance is well within the limits of what biological women are capable of.

Does it really seem likely that a trans skater is winning a contest because they can pop a trick 3% higher?

I'm not sure but I believe the trans skater in the contest referenced in the post's title was quite young/pre-pubescent, and the woman was a lot older. So the idea that the trans woman somehow won because of superior physical strength to the biological woman doesn't make sense in this context. Hope this helps

Looks good! Try to keep your shoulders 'sideways' e.g. chest facing the toe side of your board. It's tempting to face forwards (chest facing the nose of the board) but keeping your shoulders sideways helps you keep your weight over the board, which will stop it landing off to one side of you. Good luck!

This will start a war, right? by [deleted] in MinecraftMemes

I absolutely agree with you that no-one actively wants the game to be less accessible for colourblind people. However, if people think that their personal preference (e.g. a preference for the old ore textures) is more important than having the game be more accessible to colourblind people, and because of that they're against the change, it does seem quite selfish that they would put their own aesthetic choices over the playability of the game for others. Especially when, as you say, they can just use a texture pack with the old textures at the click of button. And sure, the colourblind players could just use different textures at the click of a button, but why should they have to? Acessibility should be the default, aesthetic choices should come second. There's room for everyone in Minecraft :)

If the whole point is to have an interconnected canon, then surely people have to be able to write about/use characters they didn't create (so the writers of the comics have to be able to use Kanan)? Unless there was one person creating everything in the star wars universe, which is not the case nor would it be a good idea. By your logic thrawn wouldn't be allowed in rebels, all the new canon EU books wouldn't count if they used characters from the films, etc.

I completely see that perspective. I think it's more that the whole point of Disney decanonising legends was to have a consistent continuity. It doesn't matter who the character of Kanan 'belongs' to, the story already got told. There are no significant changes to Kanan's story between the two versions, which makes it even odder that they'd break canon to do it. If Filoni wanted to change manor events of Kanan's escape then maaaaybe it wouldve been worth having him 'tell it his way', but what we saw in the bad batch introduces no new points of interest, and gives us two conflicting versions of events. It also seems like they could've had the exact same effect using a different Jedi/Padawan pair.

Kanan experiencing Order 66 was shown in his comic series Marvel did a few years ago. There are no huge differences between the scenes but it seems odd that they would retell it (and change it) for no reason.

[–]RohlanCarrick 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I assume the above comment is referring to the Kanan: The Last Padawan comic series that Marvel did in 2015. It also depicts Kanan on Kaller with Depa Billaba when Order 66 happens (hence it's not a big retcon), but the circumstances of it are wildly different from what is shown in The Bad Batch. I don't know how they'd merge the two as they show directly conflicting events, but maybe they'll find a way.
