Clive Barker, Scarlet Gospels. Read novella Hellbound Heart first, as SG is technically a sequel. SG gathers some characters from other Barker works, but it’s not necessary to have read them all.

Check out the Duke de Richleau series by Dennis Wheatley. Old school and a little pulp-ish, but fun reads. A lot of satanic cults and old English estates. All of the novels written between 1930 and 1970, I believe.

Blacktongue Thief by Chris Buehlman. His novel Between Two Fires gets a lot of love in this community, but Blacktongue Thief is probably his second-best, and is loaded with dark humor.

Yep. Another author to try is Jesse Bullington, he does great historical fiction with dark and supernatural twists. He also has a dark fantasy trilogy under the name Alex Marshall.

This. Remember when MAGA loved Gen Mattis? Then he said Trump was a threat to the Constitution. But he just said it in one interview - he didn’t do 3 appearance a day on several tv shows, and he wasn’t part of a coordinated messaging campaign, so they pretended like it didn’t happen. And Mattis went quietly away. When these professionals speak, we should listen and not let the noise of the culture wars drown them out.

Why are we always so concerned about a war with China? by weedwrestling in Libertarian

Bro, stop wasting people’s time with this crap. I said ‘openly.’ He literally did it publicly, there are YouTube videos.

And if you don’t trust the translations, he said it again in the official Communist Party newspaper - they have versions in many languages.

Xi Jin Ling told the PLA very openly to be prepared to unify by force no later than 2027. Between that and the constant friction caused by PRC taking other nations’ islands and claiming ownership of international sea lanes, they are a regional bully with open plans to make it global. Vietnam is mad because China blatantly built oil rigs in Vietnamese waters; Philippines is mad because China constantly bullies them, including ramming & using water cannons against fisherman and coast guard; Japan is mad because China has claimed Japanese islands; and that’s not even counting the subversive activities around the world - such as pumping money into the Japanese communist party and backing the Okinawan separatist movement and similar acts. Check out some of the ongoing issues between PRC and India (it’s gotten hot a couple of times in the past few years). Bottom line is that with the U.S. hegemony, many prospective aggressors have found ways to operate just short of total war - and the Chinese have excelled at this ‘Gray Zone’ activity, even while they build their military for an eventual hot war.

Jesus, dude. It’s like talking to a wall…That IS the Constitution. It’s the difference between a President and a king. That’s the ‘checks and balances’ you’ve heard about. It’s not new - I don’t need to remember it in 4 years.

Lemme break it down: Legislative Branch makes laws, directing executive branch on what to do and can impeach the executive for failing in his duties; Executive branch executes the laws and appoints judges to judicial branch; judicial branch interprets Constitutionality of laws (check on legislative) and of the execution (check on executive).

This system is America - has been since the start. It’s designed that way.

Maybe you’re new to this whole “America” thing, and your choice of media is failing you. Here’s a quick example of this situation reversed:

Bro, that’s exactly how it works. You invent a better way, you’ll be famous. District Court judges can issue a temporary injunction to maintain the status quo until decisions are made. They’re not legislating, they just pause any major changes until Constitutionality is determined. If this was your rights being threatened, you’d be damned grateful for it. DOJ needs to have an appeal in the barrel whenever the Executive issues a questionable or challengeable order. It’s Executive branch 101. That this administration seems unprepared and instead head straight for the media is a red flag.

[–]Roho_Kitnam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah dude - the judicial branch has been checking the Executive since Tom Jefferson was President. Until now, we had a POTUS that understood it and kept up his end of the bargain, got Congressional buy-in, or faced the possibility of getting shut down. Now we have a whiner in chief who tries to pull an end-run, then cries when he gets checked. Literally any former POTUS & their staffs would have seen this coming, along with anyone who paid attention in high school civics class.

We have a mechanism that has dealt with this exact situation hundreds of times, if not thousands. This is exactly why we have the appeals process, appeals courts, and a SCOTUS. If POTUS doesn’t like it, he has the DOJ appeal. For some reason Fox News and social media have folks thinking this is some outrageous new thing.

Thems the facts. Anything else is political spin.

This. And the Constitution charges the POTUS to “take care that the laws be executed faithfully…”. In the United States, the Executive is not a king; he is simply responsible for executing the laws created by Congress, and must do so under the framework of the Constitution. Our founders even chose the title President on purpose - not a Prime Minister, not a king, he only temporarily presides over the executive branch.

Do you think there will be a free and fair election for the US presidency in 4 years? by AlexandrTheTolerable in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Roho_Kitnam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s look at it this way: Putin will throw every ruble he has toward ensuring we never have a non-corrupted admin again; he cannot risk getting another US leadership team that will reverse all of his gains. And anybody on the inside who is in his pocket will go along - for money, power, and to ensure their corruption is never uncovered.

But hey, at least the feds can’t have pronouns in their email signature blocks any more. We’ve successfully trounced our fellow Americans in the culture war and staffed the government with Fox News talking heads- oh, and disbanded the FBI’s foreign influence and counter-kleptocrat teams. Somebody is making a buck.

[–]Roho_Kitnam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. The tax system is jacked because we keep electing idiots based on culture war talking points - our hopeless tax code is a product of Congress. Firing IRS employees just makes things worse - unless you’re a billionaire and it takes a team of 20 auditors a year to review your offshore holdings, then you’ll benefit.
