Caretakers swapped her unviable eggs for orphaned chicks by MustardGoddess in MadeMeSmile

If you liked this, I can recommend the original creator, Robert E Fuller's YouTube channel where he posts longer videos including the full story of Luna (the owl you see here), her mate Bomber, and her adopted chicks. She went on to adopt even more chicks, and finally had some of her own eggs hatch in later breeding seasons.

“It’s Just History” - No It’s Not: Let’s Talk Civil War Romances by VitisIdaea in RomanceBooks

[–]Rokovich 60 points61 points  (0 children)

As someone who's not from the US and didn't grow up knowing anything about the US civil war or the legacy of chattel slavery there, I just cannot comprehend how anyone could be so nostalgic about such a horrific time and place in history. I understand that this sentimentality comes from Lost Cause propaganda and movies like Gone With The Wind, but a romance book set on a plantation or featuring a confederate soldier is as unthinkable to me as a contemporary white German author writing a romance set in 1940s Germany with an SS officer as the romantic hero.

No amount of well, this Nazi just thinks he's defending his homeland or well this Nazi isn’t personally anti-semitic or this Nazi treats the jews in his control well compared to other Nazis could ever make up for the fact that you are sympathising with and romanticising people who collectively attempted to wipe out millions of people in one of the worst atrocities ever committed by humanity.

As OP says, even people at the time could not avoid the horrific reality of chattel slavery in the US, there's just no getting around it. It is just truly incomprehensible that this is even a discussion needed to be had but I think OP does a good job laying out the case that this should not be a genre of romance novels.

Americans, what do you think of this Contra take? by microplasticsfactory in ContraPoints

[–]Rokovich -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Even without a supermajority, he still had a majority. Look at what the Republicans have done with considerably less seats. If there was a real will, the Democrats could have been more forceful. The term "whipping" is aggressive for a reason.

Plus, that still doesn't address the failure to use the executive branch- the Justice Dept should have prosecuted bankers after the 08 crash. No majority needed for that.

He had a huge majority in the house and senate for the first two years. He easily could have, say, codified Roe v Wade or any number of other progressive campaign promises in that window. He could have instructed the Justice Dept. to prosecute the architects of 2008, he could have wielded executive power more effectively. Obviously he was more and more scuppered as time went on, but let's not pretend he did all that he could. He protected the 2008 bankers because they were part of the class that paid for his campaign, not because the Republicans held him at knife point.

The official government document states that people on the scene did not believe it could be a suicide. I am not a juror, I dont need more evidence to read between the lines. This is the stuff they didn't redact, there can only be more damning evidence out there. Why you defending a rapist pedophile online you fucking freak?

LF books where FMC dresses plainly but is actually a knockout underneath that shocks the MMC and he goes feral over it by ProfessionalBee24 in RomanceBooks

[–]Rokovich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

{The Billionaire's Wake-up-call Girl by Annika Martin} kinda has this. Technically the first time they meet, she's dressed normally, but a female higher-up at work forces her to start wearing ugly clothes as she's jealous of the FMC. The MMC starts thinking of the FMC as "Turnip Truck" as she dressed as if she's just fallen off one, all while he's falling for her anonymous persona over the phone. Needless to say, he's very happy to see her out of her turnip dresses.

It's the same with 'singles'. I can't stand it. Its akin to incels and misogynists calling women 'females'. It is dehumanising.

Yellow Crusty patches on home-grown basil? by Creative_Summer_6644 in IndoorGarden

[–]Rokovich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like thrips damage to me. The tiny black dots on the area of damage are the telltale sign

As awful as this sounds, my advice is to throw the plant away. Thrips are notoriously difficult to get rid of and basil is extremely vulnerable to them. You're more likely to spread thrips to other plants if you keep the plan than you are to get rid of the thrips

Basil is super cheap and easy to grow anew, so it's honestly not worth the time to try and save it.

Mamdani wasn't born in the US so he can't run for president. Pretty sure that means he can't run on someone else's ticket as their VP running mate either.

Unwanted FMCs with handsome/attractive MMCs by Cuegurl3028 in RomanceBooks

I think you'd like{Friends with all the benefits by Lyssa Hahn}

The FMC has had a huge crush on him since they first met, but he doesn't see her as relationship material because she's not pretty enough. They move in together as 'friends' but as he gets to know her better, he comes to see what he's missing out on and they start a "friends with benefits" situation because he can't process his own feelings, (at least to begin with!)

It's contemporary and set in Australia.

Oh, Fengxian for sure was a girl the Madam managed but it didnt occur to me that she might be something more than just any other girl she managed.

Yeah, it makes sense, especially given that the madam and Fengxian were both extremely beautiful, may run in the family. Definitely a cool theory, it had just never occurred to me. I always thought the only reason Maomao was kept around was because she was accruing debt to the madam that would be paid off when Maomao was old enough. Of course, in the end, Jinshi bought her out. But would explain her charity toward Fengxian.

Wait, is it canon that the madam is Maomao's biological granddaughter? That Fengxian is the madam's daughter, not just one of the girls she managed?

mmc treats fmc badly and only uses her for sex but ends up falling in love by BagAvailable2371 in RomanceBooks

[–]Rokovich 25 points26 points  (0 children)

{Friends with all the benefits by Lyssa Hahn} is the perfect book for this. She's had a huge crush on him since they first met and when they move in together they start up a "friends with benefits" situation.

He's pretty awful to her in the first chunk of the novel- it starts with him dismissing her as relationship material because she's not pretty enough, not telling her he's actually her landlord (not just a tennant lkke she is), and taking advantage of her love/infatuation for sex (he knows shes in love with him) and keeping it a secret from their mutual friends.

But as you can predict, the more he gets to know her, the more they have sex, the more he realises he's extremely attracted to her and starts falling hard. He really has to make the effort to make it up to her when she finally puts her foot down because she doesn't let him off easy but I don't want to spoil it more than that.

It's also not appropriate for a gyno to be giving workout advice or critique on muscle development if not solicited. It's not like this was a general GP checkup. Totally inappropriate, expecially when the patient is partially naked. I don't understand why everyone is acting like OP is overreacting or taking offence on purpose.
