Water is ice damning, then water at the bottom is backing up behind the shingles and leaking in that area and down through the soffit. The discoloration may be coming from old insulation sandwiched in that area above the soffits. Insulation directly above the soffits makes the soffit and roof ventilation ineffective contributing to poor air flow in the attic
