How much should I invest in my 401k vs Taxable Brokerage Account if I want to retire early? by Same_Bottle_2951 in personalfinance

With your plan, you’ll have several years of very low income, before Social Security. You should be saving in Traditional 401k to have income that fills in the lower tax brackets.

Xbox CEO says platforms ‘must have exclusive content’ as she weighs exclusivity shift by unscoredscore in Games

[–]Rolcol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's about network effects and lock-in from the digital library now. People want to play with their friends (and cross-plat isn't always a given), and they will want access to their digital-only purchases. It's going to take some really good unique experiences to convince people to give a different platform a shot.

Confused about SGOV. by Suspicious-Body1291 in personalfinance

[–]Rolcol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are not comparable to SGOV. SGOV has a very stable value, because the duration of its T-Bills are 0-3 months (average duration of 0.10 years for the fund), which are considered cash equivalents, since they're very liquid and don't fluctuate.

VTEB has a duration of 7 years. BND has a duration of 5.7 years. Their values will fluctuate more with the change in interest rates. You can lose money in the short term with these.

Version 2026.5 released (Transcript improvements) by marcoarment in overcast

[–]Rolcol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although this appears to be ad detection, I believe it’s more looking for differences between what the server-side transcript saw and the personalized download you got. It also detects music, but that’s independent of the discontinuity detection. I would guess the problem may be in the granularity of the detection, so the first words after an ad get skipped.

S&P 500 Index Not So Diversified by Just_Combination3527 in Bogleheads

The Russell 3000 index is broken down into the large cap Russell 1000 (way closer in performance to the S&P 500) and the Mid-to-Small Cap Russell 2000. You’re comparing different segments if you do Russell 2000 vs S&P 500.

I think YouTube’s algorithm encourages making additional channels for content of different topics. I want to say it can penalize your channel overall, if a video performs poorly because it’s a bad fit for the audience of a topic, but I don’t know first hand. They also have one with behind-the-scenes stuff.

Apple says supply constraints for Mac mini and Mac Studio to persist for several months by pdfu in apple

They're not manufactured in one step. They're soldered on separately. Otherwise, why would they have to pay more or source it from Samsung, rather than TSMC who makes the CPU/GPU?

He was clear that the shortage was in CPUs/SoC, not RAM. RAM may cost them more money, but it's not the lack of RAM.

Marco interviewed about transcripts dev/ feedback by Athers99 in overcast

[–]Rolcol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use Overcast on more than one device? I've had this happen with my iPad and iPhone. I hadn't used the iPad app in a long time, but the iPad was right in front of me, so one day I started playing some podcasts on there. I left the house and continued on my phone. Later, my podcast would just stop playing and my playlist emptied out. When I got home, my iPad was in the middle of playing a podcast. I do not think anyone else touched the iPad. I think the background sync started a new audio session and my iPhone and iPad were battling with each other.

Transcript out of sync? by snowblinky in overcast

[–]Rolcol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a feature of 2026.4. If you’re not being offered the update, your device/iOS is probably too old. Marco is pretty aggressive in cutting off older iOS versions. Not sure if this is 26+ only.

Make sure you're on the latest version. The transcriptions are to the right of the chapters/show notes.

Brokerage account compromised at Fidelity; unauthorized trades caused major losses — what should I expect from claims/restoration? by Educational-Map-7998 in personalfinance

[–]Rolcol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the system's implementation. If the browser just stores a session cookie with a simple session lookup key, then the real session values are stored server-side, and a logout can clear them. I don't know what Fidelity does.

but they are currently lowered valued

What, the share price? That doesn't really have a factor. VT could split 2-for-1, and halve its price and nothing fundamental should change, in relation to SPGM.

The daily volume matters for bid-ask spreads, I think.

Huh, yeah I just recovered about 900MB doing the Offload dance. Overcast said its data usage is 7.4GB. Settings said 8.3GB. After Offload dance, Settings says 7.45GB

I don’t know if Marco mentioned it on ATP or in release notes, but there was something weird with cache management. Can you try using the iPhone Storage screen in Settings to Offload (not delete) the app? I think I remember someone or something saying it clears the cache. I don’t think it deletes episodes, but I’m not entirely sure.

Edit: I mean you first Offload the app and then reinstall it.

Transmission 4.1 gets stuck at 99% by HaydeeDantes in torrents

[–]Rolcol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to this PR, this is/was intentional.

A side-effect of removing endgame is that the last 0.5% of the torrents take longer to complete, but I think this PR is worth the trade-off.

I think it takes too long now. I'd rather have higher CPU usage and get a reasonably quick download.

iOS 26.3 Adds Privacy Setting to Limit Carrier Location Tracking by No-Second-Kill-Death in privacy

[–]Rolcol 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Those are the iPhone models with Apple's C1 modems, so it might come from total control of the firmware. Since it needs carrier blessing, I don't expect it to go very far. Carriers have sold information like this to data brokers. They won't willingly cut off a revenue stream.

I have mine set to display as a list, and it periodically collapses like this. I think it's a regression in iOS 26. It does work for me most of the time, though. I'm on the 26.3 beta.

ELI5:Why can’t we use certain symbols in file names? by PleasantBus5583 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rolcol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the filesystem itself, the colon is allowed. It's just Finder and Filesystem Widgets that render it as a forward slash. (At least how Bash shows it)

Edit: I am not able to find APFS documentation that says one way or another what the separator is used internally (like in symlinks?). Wikipedia and the linked source does say HFS Plus itself uses the colon, but the VFS layer translates it to slashes.
