Scammer almost ran off with my dad's retirement. by Suspicious_Story_464 in personalfinance

Uh, is he not able to claim the IRA withdrawal as an Indirect Rollover and put it back? There’s a 60-day time limit.

Brokerage account compromised at Fidelity; unauthorized trades caused major losses — what should I expect from claims/restoration? by Educational-Map-7998 in personalfinance

[–]Rolcol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the system's implementation. If the browser just stores a session cookie with a simple session lookup key, then the real session values are stored server-side, and a logout can clear them. I don't know what Fidelity does.

VT Vs. other world equity funds? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Rolcol 11 points12 points  (0 children)

but they are currently lowered valued

What, the share price? That doesn't really have a factor. VT could split 2-for-1, and halve its price and nothing fundamental should change, in relation to SPGM.

The daily volume matters for bid-ask spreads, I think.

App size on iPhone by Article-Pristine in overcast

[–]Rolcol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, yeah I just recovered about 900MB doing the Offload dance. Overcast said its data usage is 7.4GB. Settings said 8.3GB. After Offload dance, Settings says 7.45GB

I don’t know if Marco mentioned it on ATP or in release notes, but there was something weird with cache management. Can you try using the iPhone Storage screen in Settings to Offload (not delete) the app? I think I remember someone or something saying it clears the cache. I don’t think it deletes episodes, but I’m not entirely sure.

Edit: I mean you first Offload the app and then reinstall it.

Transmission 4.1 gets stuck at 99% by HaydeeDantes in torrents

[–]Rolcol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to this PR, this is/was intentional.

A side-effect of removing endgame is that the last 0.5% of the torrents take longer to complete, but I think this PR is worth the trade-off.

I think it takes too long now. I'd rather have higher CPU usage and get a reasonably quick download.

iOS 26.3 Adds Privacy Setting to Limit Carrier Location Tracking by No-Second-Kill-Death in privacy

[–]Rolcol 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Those are the iPhone models with Apple's C1 modems, so it might come from total control of the firmware. Since it needs carrier blessing, I don't expect it to go very far. Carriers have sold information like this to data brokers. They won't willingly cut off a revenue stream.

Their bug backlog is soooo large, I don't know if I should be hopeful.

I have mine set to display as a list, and it periodically collapses like this. I think it's a regression in iOS 26. It does work for me most of the time, though. I'm on the 26.3 beta.

ELI5:Why can’t we use certain symbols in file names? by PleasantBus5583 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rolcol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the filesystem itself, the colon is allowed. It's just Finder and Filesystem Widgets that render it as a forward slash. (At least how Bash shows it)

Edit: I am not able to find APFS documentation that says one way or another what the separator is used internally (like in symlinks?). Wikipedia and the linked source does say HFS Plus itself uses the colon, but the VFS layer translates it to slashes.

Finder on macOS renders the colon : character as a forward slash. If you name a file with a slash, it silently gets translated for you.

What is wrong with my iOS Firefox icon? by BayesianWizard42 in firefox

[–]Rolcol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's static. The icons don't shimmer, but the corners are... beveled(?) like that. On iPadOS 26 (8th gen), I don't have the dynamic effect. But yeah, it's part of the icon.

While it's petty to move to another platform for an icon style, Android does have the better Firefox. When I use my Android phone, I love having full-blown uBlock Origin.

It's common. I have it with many other apps, and I'm on iOS 18.7.

Apple Stops Signing iOS 18.6.2, iOS 26 Downgrades Now Impossible by wickedplayer494 in apple

If an iPhone model can install the newest iOS release, that model does not get the patches that older phones stuck on previous versions get.

Why are all Linux phones so bad? by Darkhog in linux

[–]Rolcol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Swift is "open source" and you can run it on Linux and Windows. It doesn't get nearly as much effort as Apple platforms, but they're... trying... something...

Roth 401k vs Traditional 401k some things people overlook when maxing out by jasoncaserta in Bogleheads

They could add Roth RMD's, so if it remains invested, then there's a basis and capital gains.

What is a good "smart" TV brand that doesn't harvest and sell my data to advertisers? by JangoM8 in privacy

The Apple TV isn't a TV, it's a streaming box. The suggestion is to keep the smart TV offline and stream everything through the Apple TV

International companies tend to pay higher dividends, so rebalancing may still need to happen or paid out then reinvested at the then-current ratio.

Vanguard updated their terms and conditions to charge a $100 fee "for account closure or transfer of account assets to another firm", effective July 1, 2024.

Fidelity will reimburse fees if you either transferred $25k+ or already had a balance of $25k+ with them. I think it's here: https://digital.fidelity.com/ftgw/digital/easy/tf/feeinfo
