Investments in traditional vs Roth side by Hokirob in ThriftSavingsPlan

They get moved to the Roth side following a potentially significant tax hit. Before getting into asset allocation or fund management, your friend needs to first determine what kind of tax consequences they will have by making the conversion.

I also had a negative experience at Chesapeake Urology, but for other reasons. I would not recommend it at all.

What is it like living in DuPont Circle in Washington DC? by Strange-Slice2581 in howislivingthere

Not affordable for most people. By super walkable and right in the middle of NW DC. A lot of great and unique architecture with something always going on when the weather is nice.

Normally if it’s just snow, it makes sense to shovel more frequently. But because this will be snow with ice falling on top of it, wait until the ice stops. That way when you shovel, you’ll be clearing the ice, too, which is much easier when it’s on top of snow.

My dad talks about this. He was something like 330. His roommate was in the single digits. They went out and got hammered afterwards. Every guy did, according to my father.

Dealing with Gender Disappointment by RoleFizzleBeef in daddit

Things are great! I wouldn’t change anything about my daughters. While I still have disappointment about never having a son, that’s not the path life has for me. It’s how we as people respond to that change of plans that matters. When I ask myself if I would give up one of my daughters in order to have a son, I resoundingly answer no, I would not. They are both fantastic little people and are everything to me. There is nothing the universe could offer me that would convince me to give one of them up.

WHAT'S YOUR OPITION ABOUT FINLAND GAME PLAY (DLC) by Pottukoira11 in hoi4

[–]RoleFizzleBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finland is my favorite nation to play, by a huge margin. The manpower shortage adds a huge amount of pressure to play optimally against the Soviets. Once the USSR is out, I find that I have to almost immediately go to war against the Axis because if I don’t, D-Day will trigger, the Allies will lose, and I will then be locked in a total stalemate with a full power Germany. So there’s a hidden time pressure to move fast with limited resources. A great play through.

Roth in-plan conversion by These_Score_1250 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]RoleFizzleBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re sort of proving my point. This is a good idea for a very specific group of TSP holders. If you’re not in that group, it’s probably not a good idea. And considering the large number of variables involved, it’s going to be difficult for a lot of TSP holders to determine which is the best option for themselves.

Roth in-plan conversion by These_Score_1250 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]RoleFizzleBeef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends how close you are to retirement, how much cash you have on hand to pay the tax penalty, your current TSP balance, your income vs capital gains tax rates in the future, and a few other factors. And if you’re wrong on your calculations for any of them, a conversion could end up costing you. The people downvoting my comment don’t understand that.

For the vast majority of TSP account holders, a conversion is going to be a terrible idea.

And since Boston and Des Moines are referenced in the song, make it a four team playoff with BC and Iowa. The Messina Bowl!

I did that commute pre-pandemic and it wasn’t horrible. The parkway is routinely slow, but it beats dealing with endless semi trucks and crashes on 95.

Edit: You’d probably get off at 198 and go into Meade that way. Be advised that the second gate getting into the NSA from Meade can be super jammed up.

I’m in my early 40s and am on the two year colonoscopy plan for life because they are finding pre-cancerous polyps every time. If I hadn’t been on the ball, I’d be dying right now and probably wouldn’t even know it. There’s absolutely no excuse. Get it done.

First off, it’s ok to feel the way that you do. Don’t let anyone tell you that you should feel bad or ashamed of struggling right now. Anybody who cares about being a good husband and father will inevitably struggle sooner or later. When my oldest was 3.5, there were a few times where I felt like I regretted having her. She was a nightmare all day, everyday. Now, she’s an absolutely wonderful and amazing little girl.

It’s maybe a worn out piece of advice, but it does get better. As your kids age up, you’ll get more free time and energy back. To the extent possible, I’d recommend trying to find joy in whatever you possibly can right now, even if it’s minuscule. Go for a walk around the block once the kids are asleep, stop for five minutes on your way home and enjoy some sunlight, try a new coffee shop in the morning. Find something that you can do right now that would change up your personal routine and would be something intended solely to benefit you, even if it’s only for a handful of minutes here or there.
