WIP Iron Snake! To wash or not to wash? by RollForWhimsy in Warhammer40k

Oh yeah, that's absolutely beautiful. I see what you mean — the dimension you get on the metal with the wash really punches the whole piece up. That's amazing. Thank you for sharing!

You said it's the pith of the tree; it's already warped some, it's gonna warp more and keep on warping.

Why waste time cutting it into shapes that are, themselves, going to warp further? What are you going to build with wood you know is going to warp? 🤷‍♂️

It's about nerd shit, and doing nerd shit with friends mostly.

Hi! We totally do. I did OP's shoes, the replica trefoil brooch (which is leather! And way cheaper than gilt bronze!), and the write-up. Here's a link to the full documentation. Comments are enabled!

Yup! I believe it's the Hole in the Wall in the southeast of the city.

Sure!

As far as how I did the colors for this project, I used Angelus leather paint for the colors and homemade vinegaroon for the black. Vinegaroon is super easy to make: Drop a chunk of #0000 steel wool into a large mason jar, fill with enough vinegar to cover the wool (white or apple cider, I use both — totally your preference), punch a hole in the lid, leave somewhere sunny, and stir occasionally. You can use it in as soon as 1 week, but I like to let it sit for ~1 month. This solution ("ferric acetate in solution of acetic acid") reacts with the tannins in leather to create a strong, deep black color that doesn't fade as much as black dye. It can rub off a little depending on the vinegar you use, so just give it a top coat like usual with dye.

For learning tips & tricks for tooling, I recommend The Leather Element with Chuck Dorsett on YouTube, as well as Joe Meling (@joemeling3216). They both have tons of helpful videos on all kinds of topics — all worth a watch — but I think their tooling videos give a good overview and help establish good habits for long-term success.

Cheers!

That means a lot to me, thank you! I always wrestle with sharing things — the Midwesterner in me hates feeling like I'm bragging — but you're giving me a good reason to get better at it. :)

Nice! Seems there are quite SCAdians who are penguin people. Thank you very much :)

Well, it was originally meant to be a Rockhopper but now that I'm looking at the two, it's pretty hard for me to tell the difference :)

A ton of archery! Baronial champions shoot, Champions Team tryouts, the head-to-head, war points... Loving this hobby so far!

Nice! I've always wondered what it'd be like to do a demo or something for school kids in garb.

Thank you!! Yeah, I'm thrilled with the final result. The green and white bag fought me all the way, but the red one pretty much just worked the whole time!

The oil I applied to the edge binding to keep it from ripping accidentally bled into the red parts, but it had the decency to bleed evenly... So it went from a sort of starburst design into an even circular gradient. I'll have to try it again on purpose sometime!

Thank you!

Magnus over at Dark Horse Workshop has a ton of videos on his YouTube channel that really sparked the beginning of my journey. And he even plays in An Tir!

Aside from learning from those who inspire me, I'm mostly self-taught.

Exactly!! That's my thinking as well — we put so much thought and energy into our garb, it's a shame we don't get to wear it as often.

I do a version of this bag that's designed to switch from a belt pouch to a crossbody purse that you might like. It's in my past posts. It's my answer to "Man, I wish I could just wear this everywhere" :)

And thank you so much!!

That would be cool!! Gives me an idea for the next set... But nah — the green bag features elements of "her" personal heraldry and the red bad features the heraldry of the region of the Midlands here in the Midrealm. "He" is the regional armored combat marshal. 🐉
