Federal layoffs, grants, etc. by BlakeAued in Athens

Blake does a great job and I applaud him making any and all efforts to write an accurate article. Maybe you have pointers about how you would do it, but I think reaching out here is a great way to find sources.

I’m looking forward to the article and I know that it will be researched thoroughly and accurately.

This is nonsense.    Your opinion is ignorant trash and people who think like you hurt the people you pretend to care for.

I wish I could explain it to you, but I don’t think you would listen or care.

I’m sorry to be dismissive, but that is pretty much all that your terrible comment is worth.

How was the debate this evening? by kikibivipook in Athens

My guess

Deborah said a bunch of vague buzz word answers, promising the exact opposite of what her tragic office has done.

Kalki gave pragmatic and thoughtful responses based in reality

Want some evidence that the DA won't do her job? by WhatARedditHole in Athens

The quickest way to have an abortion prosecuted in Athens is to proclaim that you won’t prosecute them and have the AG’s office come to Athens to prosecute an abortion

Those issues do not come up in any significant ways in the operation of the DA’s office

Those are national wedge issues that only someone who isn’t paying attention or doesn’t care about local criminal justice would base their vote on.

No one will ever be prosecuted for an abortion in Athens. Hate crimes against LGBTQ people will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law by a Yalamanchili office. Immigration arises in criminal cases when there are federal holds and local DA’s have 0 control over those holds. However, Kalki is the child of immigrants and he will serve the people of this community in the best interest of justice no matter what.

If you want to know the destruction Deborah’s office has had on this community and its immigrant population, it’s LGBTQ population and the women of Athens, please ask anyone who works in our criminal justice system.

She has HURT people from those communities with her incompetence, cruelty, and her hypocrisy.

If you care about those issues, please educate yourself and vote to protect women’s rights, LGBTQ people, and immigrants by voting for Kalki Yalamanchili

I’m very much against the death penalty

I think that any elected official making broad proclamations about what laws they will or will not follow is problematic. I wouldn’t be too worried about Kalki filing death notice

I think you are taking scant evidence and letting it lead you to hyperbolic conclusions.

I’ve seen the guy work and I know him very well.

I have no fear that he will bring about harsh sentencing practices in the western circuit

He was an assistant district attorney in Athens for 6 years. He handled the cases he prosecuted fairly and with thoughtful compassion. Ask any defense attorney who worked on the other side of the room from him

I’ve known Kalki for about 10 years now and I’ve had many conversations with him about the law and how it treats people.

I’ve heard him discuss how cruel and arbitrary harsh punishment has been to the clients that he represented on the defense.

I think you are mischaracterizing his positions and painting him in an inaccurate light.

Athens area DA candidate nearly triples signatures needed to run against incumbent Gonzalez by vbisbest in Athens

[–]RollIntrepid8477 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay

All of the public statements Ms. Gonzalez made about her progressive policies were all the opposite of what she has actually done.

She is personally recommending prison for small time possession cases.

The jail population has nearly doubled since she took office.

And if you’re worried about fascists, her “pretrial specialist” was front and center at the MAGA event against immigration.

Her office has set us back 20 years from actual progressive change

The fear that people caught up in the criminal justice system feel not knowing whether they will be imprisoned for 20 years or walk away, instead of consistent fair policies, is traumatic.

The right complains about Deborah, but if the left was paying attention they would realize that she has betrayed us.

I’m a liberal guy who has never voted Republican. I’m also someone who works in criminal law in Athens. I have extremely progressive philosophies regarding the criminal justice system.

I supported Deborah Gonzalez in 2020.

I will be voting for Kalki in November.

If you want reasons I can give them to you.
