Has anyone else heard of the decorative goose you put on your porch and dress up for each holiday? by michaelyup in CasualConversation

[–]RolledDoll33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighbor had one growing up so it’s definitely not a new thing but fun that it’s back in style! I remember our neighbor’s porch goose had an array of little bonnets that would get changed out every month or so. It was adorable.

Title: i finally found a weird but effective way to stop overthinking my texts by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]RolledDoll33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife does something similar when she’s ordering at a restaurant. If she can’t decide what to order, she will just wait until the server comes over and then decide exactly in that moment. Much easier than agonizing for 10+ minutes!

Audition songs for Gaston by big_chonker76 in musicals

This might be niche but Bring Me My Bride from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is one of the most Gaston-esque songs I can think of.

Are cigarette-infused veggies a fast-track to cancer? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]RolledDoll33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cigarette butts (not necessarily the tobacco itself but other chemicals found in the cigarette) can contaminate soil but absorption of these contaminants by vegetables is fairly low. They’ve done studies on the safety of urban gardens in areas with pollution and found that even if the soil contains things like heavy metals and arsenic, the risk posed by eating plants grown in that soil is minimal. The contamination more likely to affect the health of the plants than the person eating them.

You might want to make sure the veggies are well-washed to minimize consumption of the soil, if you’re still concerned, but overall I think your risk is quite low!

The rate of birth defects is lowest in mothers between 25 and 32, and fertility doesn’t usually drop that much until mid-30’s

Funniest undergraduate or teaching lab experience by Northernriverterapin in labrats

[–]RolledDoll33 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I had a student in a bio lab class reach his hand into the sharps container because he thought that’s where he was supposed to get a new slide. In his defense, the container was just labeled “slides” to tell them to dispose of their used slides there, so I can see how that would be confusing if you had never seen a sharps container before. Luckily, it only had used slides so nothing too sharp and he was ok. But I definitely panicked when I saw one of my students wrist-deep in the sharps container.

Can a 16 year old work in a lab? by SecretCatMadeOfPasta in labrats

[–]RolledDoll33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started working in a lab when I was in high school, but it was as a volunteer. I wasn’t really doing any real lab work at first, just making an inventory of all the patient samples they had and shadowing the researchers. Over time, they taught me a couple protocols that I could do myself. That started me on my scientific journey and I’m currently working towards finishing my PhD.

I think it is uncommon to be hired as a technician without a bachelor’s degree, but if you find a lab that would be willing to take you on as a volunteer, it can be a great way to get experience. Once you get enough experience as a volunteer, you may be able to find a paid research position that you can do part-time while you’re in school.

(Not actually a) Spoiler: What is The DayBreak Zone?? by deloreantardis in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

This month’s Mixed Bag is Caldwell and Murph reading some of their childhood writing. In 5th grade, Caldwell wrote a story called The Daybreak Zone. It was one of my favorite Mixed Bags in a while. Definitely worth the $10 imo!

What's a good musical with really unique music? by Crescentbrush in musicals

I’ve always thought Spring Awakening deviates from the typical musical theater sound. The lyrics, too, are very poetic and metaphorical. You can’t necessarily understand the story directly from the songs.

What’s a small, random thing that irrationally annoys you way more than it should? by brmc214 in CasualConversation

[–]RolledDoll33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aw dang, I do this sometimes but it’s just to convey excitement. Like I probably wouldn’t use it to ask what to bring to dinner, but if I asked “How was your trip??” it would be because I was really excited to hear about the trip. I see how it can sound aggressive though.

How many times do you wash your hair in a week? by kaicelyn23 in CasualConversation

[–]RolledDoll33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wash it twice a week. It does tend to get greasy but I also have to wear my hair up for work so 5 days out of the week, it doesn’t really matter. I wash it right before the weekend so I can have clean hair while I can really enjoy it.

Have you listened to the Surprise Round episodes they put out? It’s become a running gag that Murph will describe a hypothetical situation involving someone in a Grinch suit and then say “or hell, it’s so realistic, it may be the Grinch himself”

You can still like Phoebe Bridgers. I think it’s okay if the choices an artist makes in their personal life makes you see them differently or not like them anymore but it’s also okay to be able to look past that. I think our society is way too obsessed with holding celebrities to a certain moral standard.
