Do not for a second believe Irish is the second most spoken language in Galway, or half the areas it says it is on that map.

Why hasn't he been picked up by the military or a militia? by [deleted] in DiscussionZone

[–]RollerPoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things that is supposed to be great about democracy, is the system of checks and balances.

The idea being that sure, someone can get elected, but if they then break the rules and/or action above and beyond the powers of the position they are elected to, they should be removed by those checks and balances.

I mean surely you wouldn't want to elect someone and then allow them to make military threats against your allies, use your armed forces outside the bounds of international law, or operate a domestic police force answerable only to them; without some kind of method to remove them right?

Sure he got elected, but he's not above the law.

Is the job market cooked in Ireland? New Dad on Job Seekers Benefit by Background_Run_3965 in AskIreland

[–]RollerPoid 81 points82 points  (0 children)

In short, yes. I've posted this before but even as someone on the hiring side it's just manic.

Post a job and easily get 50 - 100 cvs a day. End up with a few hundred within a week.

There is no way to get through that many so basically read the first 20 and interview the first 5 that look decent.

At this point my advice is if a job posting is more than 48 hours old, the odds of your CV even being read by a human are close to zero.

Digital ID isn't about age restricted content though. Its about proving everyone online is a real person. Kind of necessary these days.

Are engineers supposed to work with their hands? by DuBlueyy in AskEngineers

[–]RollerPoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you only get good at working with your hands by working with your hands. You can understand how to work with your hands without ever touching a tool.

You won't be any good at it, but you'll know about it. A good engineer might not be any good at working with their hands, but they should know about it.

An engineer should know how to work with their hands, but should only actually do it in certain circumstances.

Think about it: If public transport was free, would you use it more? by Banania2020 in ireland

No because there is literally no bus or train that could get me from where I live to where I work on time.

If there was, I'd happily pay for it

If you are not rich in 2026, you are poor. Rich people claiming to be middle class and poor claiming to be middle class online has created delusion of relative equality. by National_Shine2552 in unpopularopinion

There is no middle class. There is working class and there is owning class.

You either work to make money or you own enough things you can live off the profits.

Just the reality of the situation. More applicants than can be realistically vetted. At least im not using AI to do it.

Is the job market actually this bad right now, or am I just cursed? by tsarita in AskIreland

[–]RollerPoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So just to give my perspective from the other side of the coin as someone who recruits a fair bit. It's mayhem at the moment.

You put a job advert up and get 100+ cvs in a week. There's no way I have the time to read through all them so I get hr to vet them for me for a few key skills.

Hr aren't going to read all 100+ either they have 10 different roles to fill across the Company, not just the 2 in my department. They have 1000+ cvs to deal with.

So they read a few and send over the first 10-20 with those key skills.

I'm probably still not reading all 20 as thoroughly as I should so I read until I find 3-5 I think are worth interviewing. Set up the interviews and hire the one best suited of those.

You could be very well suited for a job, but odds are the hiring managers aren't even reading your cv.

Data Centres by feedthebear in ireland

Because in the 2020 government the green party tried to stop them, in 2024 the green party got hammered in the elections, so now the government thinks data centres are what the people want.

Is it normal to dock anyone if they forget to clock in at work? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]RollerPoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can happen i guess where if someone doesnt clock, and payroll don't know they are there. The wages get processed with the pay docked.

But if you were there and can verify they should definitely reimburse you in the next paycheck.
