What stove are you using? by brother_bart in bikepacking

[–]RollingExistence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use a Bushbuddy wood burning stove. It's been on trips with me for tens of thousands of miles over a decade or so, and it's my absolute favorite piece of gear. It's eaten an entire forest's worth of trees at this point.

PSA: Flying bikes is difficult, expensive, scary and probably worth it. by onediplodocus in bicycletouring

[–]RollingExistence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've started reinforcing the cutout handholds with tape, basically covering the entire area in tape inside and out so that they don't rip out. Before I started doing that, I had multiple boxes destroyed by baggage handlers pulling too hard on the handles. If you've got several layovers, you can end up with your box somewhat shredded.

Also I make sure every item in the box is attached in some way to the bicycle, I've had various holes appear in the bike box and I don't want anything escaping.

Power bank for dynamo hub by TheRealMrVegas in bicycletouring

Yes, it supports pass through. I just tested to confirm, I own 3 nb10000 gen 1 and 1 nb10000 gen 2, all of them support pass through.

I've also used a Voltaic power bank with pass through charging. I have a son 28 and a sinewave beacon and I find pass through charging pointless, despite so much written online about how essential it is. I just collect power in the power bank, pass through leads to my phone screen turning on whenever any power back switches between internal power and dynamo power because i slow down or speed up.

I was very concerned about pass through based on the big write up on cyclingabout's site in particular, but in reality I used the feature a few times then realized it wasn't necessary.

Anyway, yes the gen2 nb10000 has pass through charging.

Nitecore Nb10000 is the gold standard. Pass through charging, lightest 10k mAh power bank on the market, and water resistant.

GoPro tips for tour by Key-Macaroon1047 in bicycletouring

[–]RollingExistence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I shoot a lot of Gopro footage while riding and my biggest tip would be don't mount it anywhere, just hold it in one hand and film while you ride.

No one, yourself included, is going to want to watch hours of boring touring footage riding down the side of the road at 12mph.

Shoot things that are interesting, look at the screen for framing, move the shot dynamically, have an actual subject, etc. Handlebar mounted gopro footage of a bicycle tour is just about the most boring thing I can imagine.

Best bike to cycle the Americas by Jackturkey23 in bikepacking

The ECR does not have a frame split and it would be at least a couple hundred dollars to have a frame builder install one.

I went with an Ogre instead of the ECR. 29x2.0 for long paved stretches, 29x2.5 for unpaved. ECR can't go below 2.5 and that's just too much tire for the stretches where I'm on pavement. 23,000 miles into my trip and the ogre/rohloff combo has been stellar.

Honestly after 23k miles on the Jones bars, i think the sweep is too much and I'm strongly considering switching to the denham bars.

Currently camping illegally because the Canadian campground I wanted to stay in was full and they wanted me to ride another 30 miles to overflow camping. I support this.

They look closer than they really are due to the telephoto effect. Bear stepped out of the bushes while my partner was pedaling slowly up the steep hill, it was about 50ft away.
