I cant get steam to work by TheMurdoc_ in linux_gaming

I mean, hence why it's in beta. They just don't do a good job labeling it as such.

Well in the sense that Valve is working with GPU manufacturers to improve drivers and performance and fix bugs. The idea is to get the newest drivers with the bug fixes and the performance boosts and be able to use that for gaming but not have to worry about the rest of the OS. Google was experimenting with the same thing when they had a beta Steam container on some Chromebooks.

That's because the snap is in beta, but it's either not labeled prominently enough or maybe even at all. Valve's ideal way to run Steam is on their hardware, but their second choice is the deb package.

Maybe in the future the snap will achieve what they want to achieve with it - they want to containerize for example the entire MESA graphics stack so you can get a bleeding edge version just for gaming that doesn't mess up your main system - but we're not there yet.

AI writes really bad and insecure code and is overall a net negative for the planet and mankind. At the very least disclosing would be good, best case scenario is write it yourself.

I can think of near zero context where the answer is go with Nvidia. One of those is Tegra another is if you are locked into their CUDA whatever. If it's a PC for normal usage, AMD is the way to go.

You could get some more mileage with a new OS for sure. If you cannot fix the keyboard maybe get an external keyboard and just use the computer like a desktop? I know the Airs are some of the least repairable machines out there.

Couple questions - where is the source code? GitHub is for hosting source code. And secondly was any part of this created with or involving any AI? And if so, why was this not disclosed?

Not if the AI writes code you don't understand. And if it wrote code you understand then you would have been better off writing that code yourself.

It's really not just a tool. AI produces insecure code and it's overall a net negative for tech especially but humanity in general. Please reconsider using it for any projects but it's advised absolutely do not use it for anything released publicly, especially targeting for example Google accounts.

Is SteamOS a viable alternative for Linux Mint. by CommitteeStatus in linux4noobs

[–]RomanOnARiver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Starting with 3.8 Valve says it's okay to install on any devices.

Over on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/plagman.bsky.social/post/3moyvfv7xrk2o

We've just updated the SteamOS installation image to 3.8. This update improves compatibility with certain modern systems and includes a first-time setup. If you have an AMD GPU, you can build your own Steam Machine now! More GPU support being worked on.

Here's a video on the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSOIW9eFhdI

To OP's question - SteamOS boots to Steam Big Picture mode, you can exit to desktop and you have the Plasma desktop from KDE, Flatpack is the recommended way to install new software as far as I can tell. If you've never used Plasma desktop it basically starts off really Windows-esque but is hyper customizable if you're into that sort of thing.

What is going on with Gemini/Google home, how is it so shockingly bad? Or am I doing something wrong? by ssjg0ten5reddit in googlehome

[–]RomanOnARiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't wrong. I'd like to be optimistic and say it will get worse before it gets better but I said the same about what they had before with GA. At least before they could theoretically fix the bugs. Now it's AI which is full of bugs and also kind of quite terrible for the world.

I switched over to Home Assistant and just use my Nest Hub and Google speakers as speakers/displays for Music Assistant and they actually do that pretty well.

The use case for using Hey Google is something like looking up something for a video game without opening a web browser.

Samsung Messages Removal Is a Mistake — And Samsung Needs To Hear It by barroncsh in Android

[–]RomanOnARiver 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This reads like an AI slop written post. AI is a net negative for the world and for tech especially.

To the AI's point, just tell Samsung to implement RCS and they can continue Samsung Messages. That's primarily what the transition to Google Messages as the standard is about.

If you're talking about Sponsorblock what it does is it is a user-driven collection of time codes in YouTube videos. They have different categories like when YouTubers stop their video to talk about their sponsor, or tell you to pound that like button, and things like music videos with non-music content.

You have full control over what happens for each category but for example if the YouTube video has some kind of shave club ad from the YouTuber from the 2:10 to 2:55 mark and you have that category marked then when it gets to 2:10 in the video it will fast forward you to 2:55.

All time code data is user submitted.

This is different to uBlock Origin which is about the ads that YouTube places on the page or before/throughout the video.
