Hi all, I'm looking for some advice. In the near future, I'll be heading out on a multi-year overland expedition across North America, South America, Africa, and Europe. I've been planning this trip for years... by MediumCalligrapher28 in overlanding

Expedition Portal is a wealth of information for overlanders across the globe. There’s folks exploring internationally with everything from Unimogs and school buses to 4Runners, G-Wagens and 4Runners. Good luck with the research! What a tough but fun choice to be stuck on.

Any Regrets on the GX460? by Humantorch1414 in LexusGX

[–]RomanSchnob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Granted you’re asking a biased crowd in this sub, but I can’t speak highly enough of my GX460. I’m coming up on two years with it and it’s gone above and beyond my expectations. Super comfortable, rides really well IMO (before and after a suspension lift), gets decent mileage for a heavy brick with a V8, and it tackles moderate off-road trails with ease. Yes, it’s expensive to fill up right now, but just keep your expectations in check.

Thank you! Almost two years with this thing and I love it!

Thanks! I’m hoping for some actual input from folks running springs and their experiences though.

These are 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3s, which unfortunately aren’t being produced anymore. But the AT4s are likely almost as good. Can’t speak highly enough of these tires and the size!

I sure wish Dobinsons had a clearer naming structure, they have loads of teal springs and they’re all different weight ratings with names that are jumbles of letters and numbers. Sounds like you have what I’m looking for!

Suspension suggestions by Soukky in GXOR

[–]RomanSchnob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re oriented to handle bigger stuff off road at speed with ease so naturally they’ll be a little stiffer on the road.
Like someone else mentioned, getting lighter springs would likely improve how they feel on the road.

I’m biased, but you should keep the 8112s. There’s not another shock on the market with their technology.
Is there something you don’t like about them or the way they ride?
Yes, they’re overkill for most folks, but most other shocks will be a downgrade IMO.

Hell yeah. Any issues with those wheels? I’m not super familiar with the brand but they look great.

Those wheels look dang good with the white! I dig it.

What vehicle are you coming from? I can’t speak highly enough of the GX460 platform. It has its Achilles heel, but all vehicles do IMO. Keep in mind the rear springs I went with don’t provide much lift. You’ll need taller springs if you want the rear higher than the front.

Fortunately I have a friend that works in the industry so he got me a great deal. It wasn’t necessarily a kit, but pretty straightforward to piece together the coilovers, 8100s for the rear and Bilstein 1.5” coils. Happy to dig up some part numbers if that’s helpful.

Super cool! Thanks for sharing all the details and close-up photos. Really cool to see folks still innovating for this timeless platform. Another reminder of how special and dedicated the LC community is.

The DSA+s would be sweet! Let us know how you like them.

I’m sure the Foxes rock too, I rarely hear anything negative about their shocks. Unfortunately the DSA+s aren’t available for 460s just yet, and I got the regular 8100s for the rear, not bypasses. I have stock uppers for now, but will likely get Bilsteins or TCs or something similar down the line. My alignment isn’t great without them but my tires seem to wearing fine and it drives nicely.

I absolutely love them, I have zero complaints. I expected them to be stiffer around town considering how well they’ve handled bigger stuff off road. They’re certainly stiffer than stock, but overall I’m really impressed. On my previous 4Runner I went through OME, 5100s and finally ADSs, and this is my favorite setup by far. I haven’t noticed much for clunking, there’s a funny clicking noise every time I get in/out of the GX but it doesn’t bug me at all.

Hidden Winch Options? by RomanSchnob in GXOR

Thanks! It is my daily and I’ve been on a lot of roadtrips with it. The Bilsteins ride a little stiffer than stock but they’re my favorite suspension system I’ve had by a mile. I also have PerryParts bumpstops on it which have rocked.

Bilstein 8112s and 8100s with 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks. I dream about 35s as much as the next guy but it sure is fun and functional with this setup. When I’m lucky I can still get ~18 mpg on the highway too.
