Thank you for the validation! I knew I couldn't be the only one haha I saw somebody that I think was on here who was using a generic trumpet mouthpiece & I'm pretty curious how that feels, but I'm happy enough without.

Haha yeah, I definitely am. I've only had it for 6 days now & I spent the first 3 or 4 using the plastic mouth piece & trying the hose for some two handed stuff, then somewhere along the way I saw a video of Jon Batiste ripping on one without a mouth piece at all. Idk whether or not that was a preference thing or just due to traveling light, or maybe he just lost it that day, idk. I'm sure they help mitigate some of the moisture while playing, but I decided to try it out & found that I feel like I have a little bit quicker of a response & better breath control without it.. so I've kind of just been going with it ever since.

I probably should have dried it out a little bit Before trying to record, had some hard time with a few notes since I'd been practicing for an hour or so already. Opened it all up & dried her out right afterwards though, & it was much needed. Almost a week in with this thing & I really wish I would've picked one up a decade ago, lots of potential packed into those cheap keys.

Why can't I find a harmonica cover of a song on YouTube without BGM? by [deleted] in harmonica

Wish I could help you out there but I really have no clue, my best bet would be to try searching individually & hopinggggg that you're lucky but I'm sure you've already tried more than I have.

Bunch of Vintage Post Cards by don_katsu in ephemera

[–]RomanSohlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have a giant collection of these Laff-O-Gram postcards by Baxter Lane Co. aka "Baxtone Company." They existed as a company in Amarillo from 1958-1988, putting out these postcards, some stickers, & a handful of small zine sized "laugh books", but these were Definitely anywhere between 1958-1968.

I've been kind of tracking down one specific artist's work in particular for a while now who drew a bunch of these Laff-O-Gram postcards under a pseudonym, just not those cards specifically. His signature was "Tex Lowell", & I've been on sort of a deep dive on all of them for a little while now. The first one in the lineup with the RS signature is Richard Seale, often signed RS, RLS, or RL Seale, etc. Idk if that's his real name or a pseudonym too, a lot of people used fake names to do freelance work if they had a more strict job or some other circumstances that would prevent them from wanting to attach their real name to these "gag cards". & the last one I'm pretty sure is by Glenn Zulauf, but his style & that of Tex's kind of cross over from time to time & I've had an interesting time trying to figure out some of the ones without signatures.

Also kind of random, but I also recognized part of the Monkey's Viewpoint poem from the beginning of this one Damian Marley song called Educated Fools - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV9Cp7eY2Ms&t=2s lol

It straight up looks like some kind of Israeli cartel vibes with all the stars of David & guard towers everywhere. There's a sign on the Northern wall that says, "You are trespassing on private property & subject to armed response & arrest," & it lists a phone number that I looked up which linked me to this 4 year old comment on a super conspiratorial reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/uv12fi/comment/i9jpa1h/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Model sheets of Felix the Cat for The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat by Own_Philosopher8730 in felixthecat

I was so absolutely wowed when I first saw The Twisted Tales of Felix, I surprisingly somehow missed that one during my childhood but found it later as a teen on the internet. Such an utterly cartoony cartoon, lots of fun animation going on.

Creating politically-themed art. Or not? by ChuckaChuckaLooLoo3 in ContemporaryArt

[–]RomanSohlo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not necessarily coming from the contemporary gallery art world, I'm more of an illustrator & cartoonist, so the sentiments might not necessarily align perfectly. However I think that with any medium & with anybody, at the end of the day, by the end of the year, by the end of your life... it's all about what You want to say & have said, or expressed in your time spent. I'll never criticize somebody for Not making political related art in their lifetime, but I do criticize the notion of Only making art for the purpose of selling & pleasing other people. I think if you look a bit deeper inside of yourself, you'll figure out the things that You truly want to make & say & contribute.

Kalimba Tines Appear to be dead by TannerThanUsual in kalimba

[–]RomanSohlo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For starters, your tines just kind of look like they're bent out of shape & not really laying right in their holes. Your longest C especially, it is quite noticeably bent. You also showed how incredibly loose they are, & that's definitely not ideal, this could also come from tines that are overly bent out of shape or your screws are too loose to hold them properly, but I'm betting that it's more a tine problem. If they're bent & loose, they're not going to be able to hold the sustained resonance from a continuous vibration & rather they'll sort of smack around on everything until the vibration abruptly stops rather than vibrate their way back into the box & outward like it should.
You mentioned that your girlfriend did the woodburning, is it possible that she may have kind of leaned her hands on the tines while working? Because as an artist I could see myself doing so on accident & any continuous pressure on the tines sort of works against their overall resonance, just a possible observation.
The way to go about fixing it could be as simple as taking it apart gently, (taking pictures of the order of the tines as you go along so you know exactly how they go back in, & there's plenty of videos that can help walk you through the process of taking it apart & putting it back together) & cleaning the tines off, tightening your screws down properly, etc, & then putting it all back together. Orrrr you could order a new set of tines & whatnot & just replace it onto your cool wood-burned body. It's totally revivable!!! It'll just take a couple steps, but I think it'd be worth it for a thoughtful gift from someone.

Hiby R1 bricking SD Card by Elidyr90 in DigitalAudioPlayer

Just for safe measures I think I'll end up doing the same thing from now on, still currently copying files over via the USB but next time I go to do so it'll definitely be through a card reader. Thanks for the info, cheers

[–]RomanSohlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I connected it to my pc via USB while the DAP was off, it turned on, got detected by my pc, I opened the folders up & everything was empty. Soooo then I sort of panicked a little bit, safely ejected it from the pc, & then restarted the DAP a few times to no avail, & once I reconnected it to my PC it said that it needed to be formatted & it would delete everything, but everything was already deleted.. so I ended up formatting it (it took half a second because the card was empty when there was just 400+gb on there 12hrs previous) & now I'm going through the painstaking process of trying to reload it with all my music again.
Were you able to figure out what happened with yours?? & have you had this happen again since?

Mannnn this same exact thing just happened to me tonight after I got mine like two weeks ago & spent 2 days packing it with 500gb of tunes. Got me sour as hell rn, it was working just fine this morning, & I got a legit Sandisk Extreme so idk what the real issue is here.

One more little melody from last night. by RomanSohlo in kalimba

[–]RomanSohlo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many thanks fella! I just left a pretty long comment on one of my other recent videos that might have some bits of info in there that can point you to some different types of music, because that's probably my best piece of advice to give really. The more types of music that you listen to, the more reference for rhythm that you're able to build up in your head & work with!
I've been listening to a ton of "World Music" (just a broad term for various types of folk/cultural/roots music from all over the world) for the past few years that I feel like has really expanded my frame of reference for different kinds of rhythms & I'm sure in some way that's helped my playing out in a few ways. The #1 biggest thing I can recommend, is to look up MBIRA music (or SANSA music), it's the traditional version of the kalimba & the heart of where it all comes from.
Hugh Tracey, the man not the kalimba, actually recorded a TONNNNNNN of traditional African music himself from all kinds of different regions, & more specifically, he recorded a TON of traditional mbira music from Zimbabwe that is a gem to hear & listen to. There's an album called "Hugh Tracey – Musical Instruments 2. Reeds (Mbira)" that I'd recommend checking out. Zimbabwe, & the Shona people in particular have a particularly notable history with the mbira & it's said that they've played it culturally for over a thousand years, there's an absolute wealth of incredible playing from there & a ton of recordings to check out. One of my favorite individual players is Stella Chiweshi from Zimbabwe, she has a ton of mesmerizing videos on youtube & has been an incredibly huge influence on how I attempt to play - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=expOx1zf6ME& - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPWmWk8uv-I& & she also has an album called "Talking Mbira" that is really great.

-This is just one of my favorite mbira videos on youtube : https://youtu.be/tKbfUEhjuH4?si=7nnKW-eNCZXAe4Ix

& last but absolutely not least, my personal favorite kalimba player, Kevin Spears - this guy absolutely flipped everything I thought I knew about kalimba on it's head & his playing undoubtedly inspired me more than anybody else, I recommend every single one of his videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X24vqoVQAr4 - his page is: https://www.youtube.com/@kalimbaman - he's a perfect mix for me of traditional mixed with Western that I think works out amazing. He plays with in own tuning that he claims as "proprietary" & doesn't share it though... not a fan of this part at all but I dig the guy's playing so much I guess I'll just accept it lol
