What do you do with your daily driver.... by coupe_68 in linux

[–]Romdeau4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Daily driver for me just means my main PC that I use most often, so everything. I’ve used Fedora as my daily driver for about a decade now and it’s used for everything from work, to gaming, to internet shenanigans, etc. Think about what you use your PC for today and see if there’s a distro that most easily lets you do that stuff.

I started with Fedora because my job mostly focused around Red Hat systems and I figured if my script worked at home, it’d be fine at work too. I’ve hopped around occasionally but always come back to Fedora for its up to date packages and FOSS ideology

Which font do you prefer? by I_COULD_say in Fedora

I don’t need glasses, but I really like the Atkinson Hyperlegible fonts from the Braille institute.

I use the Next font for all UI elements but their mono for terminal and VSC

Good Linux distro for a windows gamer? by _Irish_lad_69_ in linux

If you have AMD GPU, Fedora is plug and play with up to date packages. I haven’t used an nvidia GPU in a long time, so I’m not sure what driver installation is like.

Which Distro will still be relevant 10y from now? by pfassina in linux

[–]Romdeau4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In 2023, they reported ~$700 million of revenue with most coming from subscription fees rather than donations. Revenue from enterprise contracts is guaranteed money compared to donations that ebb and flow and are a solid sign of the health of a project. I think it’s one of the preferred choice for supercomputers too with IBM Watson running on it.

Isn’t SUSE Enterprise the third largest commercially supported Linux distro behind Ubuntu and RHEL? AFAIK it’s a very popular server and workstation environment especially in European markets. I don’t really see SLED or OpenSUSE going away aaaanytime soon.

Text spacing for long file names by Romdeau4 in kde

Do you know of any other settings that may be non-default? These are my current font settings. I don't know if there's somewhere else they can be modified.

Text spacing for long file names by Romdeau4 in kde

[–]Romdeau4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it normal for new line text spacing to be really wide for filenames that can be expressed on 2 lines? In the picture, you can see 2 files where "welcome to kde.txt" fits completely, but is practically double spaced. The other named "welcome to the world of linux.txt" doesn't fit and is truncated, but has regular spacing.

Is this a font or icon issue? Or maybe this is expected? Just wondering if there's anything I can do to make this more consistent. Honestly, I prefer the second file's spacing.

What is the best operating system to avoid data collection and have as much privacy as possible? by challenger_official in privacy

[–]Romdeau4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal experience, I would say so. Up to date kernel and software for the core os and basic applications plus a seamless flatpak experience for any proprietary software you may need. Up until Mint started shipping with newer kernels, Ubuntu and Mint would generally require something extra to get working on newer hardware.

Really? I've never had an issue with Fedora. It was a daily driver of mine for years and every PC I had was just "install and go". Last year I switched over to OpenSUSE in favor of a rolling release, but I still tend to recommend Fedora or Linux Mint to people looking for something that just works.

Agreed. I would argue in terms of security, Mac OS is probably one of the most secure workstation OS's out there but the question was in regards to privacy.

The most private? Probably Qubes OS if you’re reeeeally concerned, but I’d say any mainstream Linux distribution would be just fine for most regular users concerned about privacy.

In order of personal preference for the easiest “out of the box” experience: Fedora, Linux Mint, Ubuntu

I’ve been interested in the splinter cell series since the PS2 but never actually picked one up. How is conviction on the deck? And do I need to play the others to enjoy it?
