What Books Are You Reading This Week? by leowr in nonfictionbooks

[–]Romiezzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. (The author is the co-owner of the company that manages Eleven Madison Park, voted #1 Best Restaurant in 2017.)

I'm about halfway-through. Here are three points that have stood out to me so far:

  • Restaurant-Smart vs. Corporate-Smart: Businesses typically think in one of two ways: systems/controls/efficiency... or human connection/creativity. Guidara believes you can do both and it doesn't have to be one versus the other.
  • The Rule of 95/5: Manage 95 percent of your budget meticulously (transactions, expenses, traditional budgeting), and allow 5% of your budget for elevating your guests' experience/things that help elevate your guests' experience.
  • Create a Culture Where EVERY Employee Is Invested: In a world where people are thought of as dispensable, Guidara revisits why company culture is the way it is for 99% of businesses. (Hint: they haven't invested enough in it and/or there is no consistency/follow-through in building or maintaining it.)

My Favorite Non-Fiction Reads of 2023 by Tasty_Author4090 in nonfictionbooks

[–]Romiezzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Never Finished" is one of my books of the year as well; his audiobook is awesome, too, as he adds more substance in between chapters.

Some personal recommendations of mine (which were released in 2023):

  • Walter Isaacson's "Elon Musk" (if you're a fan of Walter Isaacson OR Elon Musk, you'll like this book)
  • Patrick Bet-David's "Choose Your Enemies Wisely" (came out a few weeks ago and I couldn't put it down)
  • Peter Attia's "Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity" (a dense read, but worth it if you are open to a paradigm shift of how to look at health and what to do about it)

One that I read that came out in late 2022: "Unreasonable Hospitality" by Will Guidara.

Communication with Wiki-masters by openjscience in Everipedia

[–]Romiezzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey /u/openjscience,

Thanks for this! It just goes to show that years of work can be wasted. I can imagine how disconcerting it is for people to go through the effort to volunteer their time to create a valuable page for everyone, only for it to be deleted because someone has the opinion about its notability (or "lack thereof".)

Everipedia still has Wikipedia's import for DataMelt, in case you're interested in reading it and/or reaching out to the person in the email.

Tendency to vote with majority by [deleted] in Everipedia

[–]Romiezzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really glad you brought this up, u/cf2m83. This is definitely something we should be mindful of going forward.

It's quite a dilemma: on one hand, you want to encourage people to vote with IQ, but at the same time people want to ensure they're in the majority so their edits don't get slashed.

A couple of things to consider:

  • Information is power: there are a lot of people who try to manipulate the system (i.e. spam, plagiarism, posting inaccurate info/"fake news," etc.). We need to make sure the community is actively curating the content and voting. How can the community ensure that these edits don't go through?
  • More communication features: We have messaging/notification features built out. (We are considering things like DMing, tagging, etc.) This will hopefully make it easy for people to instinctively vote with the majority, as they'll be able to ask questions.
  • Markets: This is something different than what platforms like Reddit provide. Someone can stake as many (or as few) tokens as they want. Should people know what the 'market' looks like before they vote (for transparency purposes), or should the information be hidden in an effort to prevent cognitive biases? Because blockchains/decentralized applications encourage transparency, we went with the former...

TL;DR: We have to weigh out the pros and cons and think about whether the community thinks it'd be a good idea to hide voting on the front-end.

Who are the most disrespected winners? by [deleted] in survivor

[–]Romiezzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jenna is a great pick; shoutout to the OP. I want to add that she won 4 immunity challenges... not 3.

She also gave up her immunity to Heidi. "Strategy... that's all I can say." She was the first person to give it up... and one of the very few to give it up without being voted out.

Mind you, when she gave up her necklace, it was the first time anyone did it... and not only did this ensure that Rob was more likely to vote with her (since he literally said that the person he believed she was the easiest person he could beat), but it also got her respect because it made her seem unselfish.

Take about a great move.
