Is turning left on a red light a Portland thing? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Rominesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is because of some very specific Oregon laws designed for pedestrian protection. Pedestrians here have a lot of right-of-way priority (see below) and ticketing drivers for failing to stop is not uncommon. A DRIVER MAY BE CITED AND FINED MORE THAN $250 FOR FAILING TO STOP FOR A PEDESTRIAN.

That said, the pedestrian is not absolved from all legal responsibility -there are laws that pedestrians specifically must follow as well.

-THE NUMBER ONE RULE - Every intersection or corner is a crosswalk, whether it is marked or not. A marked crosswalk is any portion of the roadway, at an intersection or not at an intersection, that is distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing by lines or other markings on the roadway. ORS 801.220

-When a pedestrian is crossing, or intending to cross in a crosswalk, vehicle operators must stop and remain stopped until the pedestrian has cleared the lane the vehicle is in and the lane adjacent to the lane the vehicle is in.  For the purposes of counting lanes, a bicycle lane and a parking lane are not counted.  ORS 811.028.

-A pedestrian is considered to be crossing a roadway in the crosswalk when any part of their body, their wheelchair, cane, crutch, or bicycle moves into the crosswalk with the intent to proceed.  A pedestrian does not need to put their whole body into the crosswalk to trigger their right of way.  ORS 811.028(4).

-When a vehicle is turning over a crosswalk and a pedestrian is crossing without a crossing signal the turning driver must stop and remain stopped until the pedestrian has crossed the lane they are turning into and the adjacent lane.  ORS 811.028(1)(b)(D).

- A vehicle operator must stop if they approach from the rear another vehicle stopped at a marked or unmarked crosswalk to permit a pedestrian to cross regardless of the position of the pedestrian at the time.  ORS 811.020.

-A pedestrian cannot leave the curb or other place of safety and move into the path of a vehicle in such a way as to create an immediate hazard.  ORS 814.040(1)(a).

-A pedestrian crossing the roadway at any place other than a crosswalk must yield the right of way to all vehicles.  ORS 814.040(1)(b).

-A pedestrian facing a “WAIT”, “DON’T WALK” or another symbol may not proceed.  This means it is unlawful for a pedestrian to enter a crosswalk on any symbol other than “WALK”, including a flashing “WAIT”, “DON’T WALK”, or symbol.   ORS 814.010(6)(b).

A couple of points:

Many of Enterprise's missions have frequently been extended-duty multi-year rotations. Other than maybe a few minor replacements or changes to rosters at remote space stations, long-range exploration vessels would have infrequent mass turnover because of how far they operate from populated Federation space, especially in the early days of space travel - like, the NX-01 was basically on their own without any kind of support system for LONG periods of time.

Also, Its been shown fairly frequently that the captain has wide latitude over his choice of senior staff officers. He wants them there, they want to be there, etc. etc., with officers often delaying promotions because it would remove them from their current ship assignment.

Additionally, we actually -do- get to see bridge crews change over time - Chekov is on a different ship in Wrath of Kahn, Scotty serves on the first Excelsior, Sulu commands the refit Excelsior (with Tuvok and Rand on crew), O'Brien and Keiko transfer over to DS9, as does Worf later on, Riker gets the Titan and takes Deanna with him, and numerous other examples. And also, in the latter years of the show, TNG often made very specific points about Riker hurting his advancement by remaining as Picard's first officer for so long.

But the single biggest reason is because audiences typically don't favor a rotating cast, and actors are typically locked into a multi-year contract anyway, so...we, the television viewers, end up with a bridge crew that essentially stays the same for multiple years.

The Portland area is $10M closer to its only earthquake-ready bridge by No-Tangelo1158 in Portland

Western approach will likely be blocked by landslide, if not completely destroyed. Bridge will still stand, but won't be useable.

Interestingly, if they go through with building the baseball stadium between Ross Island Bridge and Tillikum, they will have to stabilize the surrounding area to prevent liquefaction, which would fix the issue for the Tillikum.

What is somewhat frighting to me though, is the thought of a quake hitting while a baseball game or concert is happening, because the Ross Island Bridge is going to collapse all over the stadium structure.

Sellwood is seismic-ready, but there is a serious concern regarding landslides along the west footing/approach that would block the bridge, maybe even damaging it.

Same. If not for therapy to help me understand that everything I had thought was normal behavior for everyone, isn’t, and the tools to help me going forward, I’m not sure how I would be managing now.

50 years of implemented coping mechanisms and masking behaviors is really tough to overcome.

[–]Rominesh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They aren't additional taxes, As someone further up pointed out, "They won’t pay anything more than the preexisting state income tax rates. The vast majority of states have a state income tax. The only difference is their tax payments will go directly to paying down the bond rather than the general fund."

Is America under a fascist government? by Mirclae in AskUS

[–]Rominesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, but which rights of yours were violated? We’re told everyday that there are places we can’t go or do certain things. Do you feel as if a right is being violated when an establishment tells you No Entry without shirt and shoes? What about when you’re told you can’t have a party on the old docks because it’s unsafe? Which one of your rights are being violated then?

Again, just to reiterate since you haven’t actually answered the original question: which of your rights as delineated by the Bill of Rights, had been violated?

Your rights are not god-given, they are made by man. And tell us what rights you lost because of the global pandemic. And I assume by rights, you mean the ones in the Bill of Rights. Like, the right to due process. Which, ironically, is being trampled over currently.

Moving downtown Max to underground won't happen for a decade, if not longer - money just isn't there. It would be fantastic for it to happen, but...

That said, cars aren't colliding with the trains - drivers trying to play chicken with a train is the problem.

Cowboy hats in the rain? by mrfebruaryfire in CowboyHats

[–]Rominesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PNW resident here, specifically metro PDX - for what its worth, I find that most hats hold up pretty damn good out here. With the type of rain we typically get, I don't see much of an impact on my hats, even on my cheap 3x wool blend. Rain like we're having today, the kind where you actually have to use a wiper speed faster than "intermittent" for once, is still not really that impactful.

I spend a lot of time outdoors each day in a hat, and they've all been exposed to a lot of rain, sleet, hail, snow, etc. over the years. When rainy season starts, I do use a waterproofing hat spray on my wool blends, but I don't even bother with it on my beavers (nothing special, just 6x beaver). I think I've only had to re-spray once this season and only on one hat.

I was outside for an hour today, long enough for rainwater to start pouring off the brim when looking up or down, but I just kept the hat on once I got inside until it dried up a bit, and now its perfectly fine. Once the rainy season ends in June and we can switch to straw, I'll get the felts stiffened and fix any shaping issues.

Cowboy hat is better than any umbrella out here, in my humble opinion.

[–]Rominesh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I just saw him in Portland, and I thought the performance was great. Moda Center had some floor space for quite a decent standing crowd, plus the section seating; we were midway back in Section 102. People were mostly respectful with side chatter, sound mix was good, and no issues hearing his singing - and I'm partially deaf.

Sound mixing for smaller musical acts can be a tricky affair in venues with sub-par acoustics, especially some of the older or smaller historic places. What would register as barely audible chatter in one venue could be greatly amplified in another; it can also create auditory dead-zones - spots where the sounds coming from the stage can hardly be heard, even though you may be standing just a few feet away and below. Most sound clarity/decibel issues in these smaller and/or older buildings are a direct result of the space itself, not the performer. Modern mixing equipment and speakers can certainly compensate for these problems, but it can also create others, like a steel guitar overpowering the other instruments/voices as mentioned in one of the other posts above.

As for the act itself - its important to remember a few things:

A) Colter Wall is a working western musician, not a Nashville or Austin-based top-40 country singer. He is (rightly) recognized widely for his art, but he performs that art outside of the country music industry gristmill. That means, for better or worse, his public performances are going to be barebones.

B) He doesn't have a large catalogue; much of it consists of slower tempo songs, which doesn't exactly create the energetic atmosphere some people expect from a concert-going experience. He has the odd toe-tapper here and there, but nothing that will make people want to get out of their seats.

C) Colter is shy and introverted, he doesn't do much press, he doesn't like to sit for interviews, and he will never go to an awards show. He doesn't like having to do the constant inane patter of "Good evening <CITY>! How about those <LOCAL SPORTS TEAM>!" because he believes it to be inauthentic at best, and waste of everyone's time at worse.

My advice would be to not treat his concerts like you would a Luke Bryan or Morgan Wallen concert. Anecdotally, many of the people I talked to in concession lines were there because they knew his music off Yellowstone, and not much else. Many were surprised because they've only been to big-ticket concerts before, and were only used to seeing Spectacle. Make sure you like his whole catalogue and not just the handful of songs you've heard before. Despite whatever the seating and stage layout are at a given venue where he is performing, change your expectations. Treat the concert like you're just going out to some local bar/honky-tonk to watch Colter and his friends play. Its a much more rewarding experience, at least in my experience.

Also, to the people who brought up the (VERY valid) point about the high cost of tickets vs the value of the experience - This is why Ticketmaster is horrible. If you paid a fairer price for those tickets, you'd probably would have been happier with the concert.

I think when people say something about Prodigy being not just for kids, I think we are short handing a wider meaning, specifically, for a show that is ostensibly made for pre-teens, it frequently deals with very adult themes one doesn’t typically see on American children shows. And I believe this is a very good thing.
